This year, as many of you have heard or may have experienced firsthand, Iowa has seen a particularly large number of folks who have been adversely affected by this year’s flu virus. In fact, the most recent figures show that so far 43 people have tragically died in Iowa alone because of the flu virus, making this one of the worst flu seasons in years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends three steps to help prevent the spread of the flu virus. They include taking preventative actions, such as washing your hands and avoiding contact with those who have the flu, getting a flu shot, as well as taking a flu antiviral drug if prescribed by a doctor. Taking these three steps can help protect you and others from getting and possibly spreading influenza. While most normally healthy adults who contract the flu will have a mild case that would not require medical care, children younger than 5, adults over 65, pregnant women and residents living in nursing homes are at a higher risk for developing flu-related complications. However, this year’s flu strain has been particularly dangerous, and is affecting younger, healthier populations as well. If you are experiencing any flu-related complication, it is strongly suggested that you seek medical assistance. I have been a longtime supporter of the CDC and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to ensure they have the funding necessary to create the medical breakthroughs that are necessary to help treat and prevent the flu virus. If you would like additional information about the influenza virus, you can visit www.cdc.gov/flu/. For specific information about the spread of the flu in Iowa, you can visit: http://idph.iowa.gov/influenza. As reports continue to show, this is one of the more dangerous flu strains that we have seen in a while. I invite you to stay aware and take the necessary steps to keep you and your family healthy. Sincerely,

Dave Loebsack
