Join Snow White and the German American Heritage Center for story time as we explore fairy tales, stories, and other German tales old and new! Enjoyable by all ages, come hear your favorite stories, as well as some you may not be familiar with. ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM IS FREE!
 
A Journey Through Bavaria: Nuremberg, Munich, and the Alps

Envision the beautiful Alps,Germany's beautiful landscape and castles, and the culture that accompanies Southern Germany. Dr. Ute Chamberlain will present on her impressions from her most recent trip to Germany. She will guide you through medieval and modern historical and cultural sites, from the imposing medieval Nuremberg Castle to Hitler's Eagle's Nest in the Bavarian Alps, and will highlight the connection between the historical past and the contemporary culture and society in this unique part of Germany.
Dr. Ute Chamberlin teaches Modern European and German History at Western Illinois University. She regularly leads short-term study-abroad trip to Bavaria.
 
Stationary Historic Walking Tour

Enjoy our historic walking tour program in the comfort of the GAHC! Join us on the fourth floor on Saturday, February 24th at 2pm to hear WIU Museum Studies student Andrew Kirkland take us on an informative "stroll" through the historic West Third Street district and the Gold Coast. Learn about the many German Americans that were involved in civic and commercial life here in Davenport.
The Center plans on another Summer tour for 2018!
 
Book Signing and Meet & Greet with Author John Brassard Jr.

Scott County is one of the oldest counties in Iowa. It is where the Blackhawk Treaty as signed and where the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was built. But Scott County has also been witness to many shameful deeds. Travel down Utica Ridge Road, where young Grace Reed paid the ultimate price for spurning the affections of a local farmer. Enter the bedroom of Margaretha Nehlsen, who poisoned her children with chocolate candies. Hear the tale of Harry Hamilton, a former policeman turned career criminal who played a key part in perhaps the most infamous bank robbery in Scott County history. Come and explore these stories and more with author John Brassard Jr. as he guides you through the darker side of Scott County history, in the new book " Murder and Mayhem in Scott County, Iowa".
John Brassard will be available at the German American Heritage Center at 2 PM to promote and sign for his new book! Drop on by to get your book and satisfy your morbid curiosity on Scott County's dark past.
