LINCOLN, NEBRASKA (August 27, 2026) — Hannah Highberger of Bettendorf, Iowa, a recent graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, is among 41 incoming first-year students selected to join the Nebraska Business Honors Academy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this fall. Comprising the academy's fourteenth cohort, the students hail from eight US states and sixteen Nebraska communities.
Highberger is majoring in accounting.
"These students have already demonstrated exceptional achievement, leadership, and curiosity in their schools and communities," said Kathy Farrell, James Jr and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean and professor of finance.
"The Nebraska Business Honors Academy will challenge them to think critically, collaborate across disciplines, and apply their talents through hands-on experiences that prepare them to lead in a rapidly-changing business world."
The incoming cohort plans to study in nine academic majors within the College of Business. The students will complete much of their core and foundation business curriculum together, using an action-based learning approach designed to strengthen critical thinking, technical, and communication skills.
The program also emphasizes experiential learning through leadership activities, national competitions, internships, and global-study opportunities. This summer, more than 100 academy students completed paid internships across thirteen states, while more than thirty students studied abroad — including eighteen in the academy's first faculty-led study abroad program in Kenya.
Since the academy's founding, ten cohorts have graduated and pursued careers or graduate education across 35 states and six countries. About 25% of academy alumni enrolled directly in graduate- or professional-degree programs.
On campus, academy students participate in more than 150 student organizations and serve in key leadership roles.
"Cohort 14 is such an exciting addition to the academy," said Erin Burnette, director of the academy.
"They are bringing unique perspectives and strong leadership experiences from their schools and communities, and we are excited to help them learn, grow, and develop during their time at Nebraska. We have no doubt they will leave a lasting impact on campus."
