MUSCATINE, IOWA (September 4, 2025) — One in five people in the US are diagnosed with a mental-health condition each year. Research indicates people with mental-health conditions are more able to recover fully if they are supported at home. NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley will offer two free, nationally-developed mental-health education programs in Muscatine to provide important information to family members and friends of people living with a mental-health condition.

NAMI’s Family and Friends program is a ninety-minute seminar that provides practical skills and information to address concerns such as understanding mental-health diagnoses, treatment and recovery, effective communication strategies, and crisis preparation strategies. It will be held Tuesday, September 16, 6-7:30PM, at Muscatine Community College, Strahan Bldg., Classroom 8, 152 Colorado St, Muscatine.

The intensive core program, Family-to-Family, will be held on eight consecutive Tuesdays from Tuesday, September 30 to Tuesday, November 18, 6-8:30PM, also at Muscatine Community College, Strahan Bldg., Classroom 8, 152 Colorado St, Muscatine. This is an evidence-based program for families and caregivers of individuals dealing with such mental-health conditions as major depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Many family members describe this program as “life-changing.”

Both programs are delivered by trained volunteers with lived experience supporting a loved one with a mental health condition. More information and links to online registration for both programs are available at namigmv.org/events.
