IOWA CITY, IOWA (June 24, 2019) — On Tuesday, June 25, NextGen Iowa will host two letter-writing parties in Iowa City and Des Moines where young Iowans will write letters urging Senator Joni Ernst to support the Equality Act. Sen Ernst has consistently ignored the basic rights of LGBTQIA+ Iowans and disappointed allies by voting against the Student Non-Discrimination Act and publicly stating she would support a federal ban on gay marriage. At the letter-writing parties, NextGen Iowa will make it clear that young voters, who are overwhelmingly progressive, will vote out leaders that don’t support the LBGTQIA+ community.

In 2018, NextGen Iowa registered 14,243 young voters, collected 21,668 pledges to vote, and knocked on 63,270 doors. Young Iowans flexed their progressive power by electing three Democrats to the US House of Representatives, including Iowa’s first female Representatives. This year, NextGen Iowa remains committed to organizing young people on college campuses and in communities around elections, fighting to expand access to the ballot box, and advocating for progressive change.
