DES MOINES, IOWA (June 6, 2019) — On June 8 and 9, NextGen Iowa will be supporting LGBTQIA+ Iowans, registering young voters and recruiting volunteers at Des Moines Pride. NextGen Iowa will be joining thousands of young Iowans to take pride in our power to stand up to bigotry and safeguard our communities. NextGen Iowa launched its Summer Pride tour last week at Sioux City Pride, where they collected over 300 petitions pressuring Senator Joni Ernst, who is up for re-election in 2020, to support the historic Equality Act. This Pride month, NextGen Iowa will also collect LGBTQIA+ friendly books for donation, encourage people to write letters to LGBTQIA+ youth, and register young voters at Pride celebrations across the state.

In 2018, NextGen Iowa registered over 14,243 young voters, collected over 21,668 pledges to vote, and knocked on 63,270 doors. Young Iowans flexed their progressive power by electing three Democrats to the US House of Representatives, including Iowa’s first female Representatives in the House. This year, NextGen Iowa remains committed to organizing young people on college campuses and in communities around elections by fighting to expand access to the ballot box and advocating for progressive change.
