IOWA CITY, IOWA (June 13, 2019) — On June 15, NextGen Iowa will support LGBTQIA+ Iowans, register young voters, and recruit volunteers at Iowa City Pride Fest and Parade. In the past two weeks, NextGen Iowa has attended both Sioux City and Des Moines Pride, where organizers collected over 1,100 petitions urging Senator Joni Ernst, who is up for re-election in 2020, to support the historic Equality Act, and committed over 800 people to vote in upcoming elections. At Iowa City Pide, NextGen will also collect LGBTQIA+ friendly books for donation and encourage people to write letters to LGBTQIA+ youth.
In 2018, NextGen Iowa registered 14,243 young voters, collected 21,668 pledges to vote, and knocked on 63,270 doors. Young Iowans flexed their progressive power by electing three Democrats to the US House of Representatives, including Iowa’s first female Representatives in the House. This year, NextGen Iowa remains committed to organizing young people on college campuses and in communities around elections, fighting to expand access to the ballot box, and advocating for progressive change.
