February 14, 2017 - Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the Director of the Office of Government Ethics said Kellyanne Conway’s comments criticizing Nordstrom and promoting Ivanka Trumps’ clothing line was a “clear violation” of ethics rules. At the same time, if President Trump were to make the same remarks, he would not be subject to the same laws that cover employees.
“As the Office of Government Ethics has made clear, not only are the obvious ethics violations of White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway troubling, but so too are the different set of standards for her boss. If President Trump had said the same thing, there are no laws on the books that would punish him. For too long, American workers have been held to a different set of standards than their bosses, and no one has embodied that glaring inequity more than President Trump. Congress must act to ensure that the President is covered by the same laws that govern White House employees.”
