Members of The University of Iowa Orchestra

IOWA CITY, IOWA (October 25, 2019) — Earlier this fall, The University of Iowa Orchestra performed a concert exclusively for fourth-grade students in the Iowa City Community School District. The annual event, staged in the UI's Voxman Music Building, attracted more than 1,400 students.

Teachers and staff of the Iowa City Community School District Foundation, the organizers of the "Symphony Goes to School" program said the lesson of the day is bigger than music.

"They get to feel and experience some different types of culture they might not be able to experience from where they're from," Drew Landolt, a fourth-grade teacher at Christine Grant Elementary School, told KCRG-TV, the local ABC affiliate. "And getting to come down and see the University students gives them something to maybe look forward to later on in life."

Support of the "Symphony Goes to School" program falls squarely within the UI School of Music's stated mission: The UI School of Music aspires to meaningfully engage the public through our many performances and presentations, both on campus and across the State of Iowa. We aspire to be at the heart of cultural life at the University, in the community and region, and beyond.

The post-event message from the UI School of Music via its official Facebook page was much more succinct: "We love nurturing the next generation of musicians!"
