FAYETTE, IOWA (January 28, 2026) — Upper Iowa University (UIU) is pleased to announce the official launch of its new ninety-credit Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, following final approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). UIU is among the first group of institutions in the nation to offer a reduced-credit Bachelor's degree designed to give students a more focused, affordable, and efficient path to graduation.
The ninety-credit option will be formally available to online students beginning May 18 (UIU Session 5) and to Fayette campus students beginning Fall 2026 (UIU Session 1).
"As a university dedicated to expanding access and enhancing student success, this innovative degree reflects our commitment to meeting learners where they are," said Dr Billie Cowley, Vice President of Academic Affairs.
"With HLC approval, UIU is proud to offer students a high-quality, streamlined pathway to a respected business administration degree."
Three Pathways, One Program — More Choice for Students
UIU now offers three distinct pathways within the Business Administration major, giving students greater flexibility based on their goals, academic background, and timeline:
120-Credit Business Administration, BS
Ideal for students who:
- Want to pursue a double major or minor;
- Bring in significant transfer credits; and
- Are still exploring their academic direction.
Ninety-Credit Business Administration, BS
Designed for students who:
- Want a faster, more efficient route to a business degree;
- Are focused on completing their degree sooner; and
- Are confident in selecting Business Administration as their major.
Dual-Degree BSBA + MBA Bundle (Ninety-Credit BS + 36-Credit MBA)
A powerful option where students can earn both degrees in about four years. Ideal for:
- Student-athletes, who can balance the structure with NCAA schedules;
- High-achieving students; and
- Online and nontraditional learners planning to pursue graduate study.
Qualified students may complete up to twelve credits of MBA coursework during their Bachelor's degree through UIU's LINK pathway.
Focused, Affordable, and Career-Ready
The ninety-credit degree allows students to:
- Graduate sooner and reduce educational costs;
- Stay on track for career or graduate school goals;
- Transfer up to sixty credits, (51 credits from a two-year institution or up to sixty with upper-division credit) providing a clear pathway for community college partners; and
- Maintain the same level of academic rigor as the traditional 120-credit degree.
"This approved degree expands opportunity for students who want a faster, more direct path to the workforce," said President Kathy Franken.
"It also advances key priorities in our upcoming strategic plan, IMPACT 2028, by increasing access, strengthening partnerships, and supporting enrollment growth."
Despite requiring fewer credits, the ninety-credit degree maintains all essential academic standards, including:
- Thirty upper-division credits;
- Completion of Peacock Professional Experience (general education);
- Core business curriculum; and
- GPA and residency requirements.
