(Rock Island, IL) NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative invites the public to celebrate at its 6th annual Cocoa & Cookies Social. The event will take place on Saturday, January 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their world headquarters at 1612 Second Avenue in downtown Rock Island.
The Cocoa & Cookies Social is free to attend and is open to both men and women. “We encourage everyone to bring a friend and help us celebrate our six years of success and learn how we are moving forward with our mission to rise up against ovarian cancer,” said Jodie Shagrin Kavensky, the Founder and CEO of NormaLeah.
Ovarian cancer has long been considered a silent killer because the symptoms are vague; it is hard to detect, difficult to treat, and there is no reliable detection test. NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative’s mission is to enrich lives through early detection education, patient support services and research funding for ovarian cancer—the silent killer of women. We are reducing the incidence and mortality rates of ovarian cancer by empowering all women and those who love them to recognize the subtle symptoms, assess their risk and seek proper medical attention for the best outcome.
All women are at risk for ovarian cancer and approximately 1 in 75 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. This year more than 22,000 American women will be diagnosed with the disease and about 14,000 more will die. The organization honors the memory of Mrs. Kavensky's mother, Norma Yecies Shagrin and her aunt, Leah Yecies Hantman, whose lives were cut short by the deadly disease. “Sisters share a lot of things but ovarian cancer should not be one of them,” Kavensky said.
