In 2017, the Legislature and Governor prohibited cities and counties from establishing better wages, employment benefits and other standards than what are required by federal or state law.

DES MOINES, IOWA (January 31, 2019) — The Iowa State Fair will celebrate the 90th birthday of Baby Mine at the 2019 Fair in the form of a concrete statue contest. Baby Mine was a baby elephant that 15,000 Iowa children helped sponsor and name by sending in nearly $1,000 in nickels and dimes. Baby Mine debuted at the 1929 Fair and 25,000 children showed up the first day of the Fair to meet it. A replica of Baby Mine is located in Fun Forest near the children's train and playground.
