These things don’t stop for the holidays. Neither does the need for blood. The American Red Cross urgently needs blood donors to give now to help ensure blood remains available this holiday season for vital medical treatments and unforeseen emergencies.

New Year’s resolutions are common this time of year. Some are easily broken; others are sincerely made, but hard to keep. The decision to eliminate tobacco from your life is a commitment that takes self-control and support. Scott County Health Department reminds residents who have made the healthy choice to quit smoking that help and support is available through Quitline Iowa.

Sam’s Club will be donating over $2,500 in pet supplies on Tuesday morning to the Humane Society of Scott County.

“The need for donations increases during the winter months,” said Ryan Wille of the Humane Society of Scott County. “We tend to find more stray animals this time of year. When you feed 300 animals up to three times a day, you run through so much food so this donation is just what we needed for the holidays.”

All five Ensembles perform side-by-side with another ensemble, including a performance of the Youth Symphony Orchestra with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra featuring the QCSYE Concerto Competition Grand Prize Winner. Ensemble members come from the greater Quad Cities, as well as other communities in southeast Iowa and northwest Illinois.

All five Youth Ensembles will perform, and the QCSYE Concerto Competition YSO Prize Winner will perform with the Youth Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of the outstanding QCSYE conducting staff, members have the opportunity to perform great orchestral and choral repertoire with the most talented young musicians in the area. Ensemble members come from the greater Quad Cities, as well as other communities in southeast Iowa and northwest Illinois.

Lucky the TurfMutt is a former street dog who knows all too well how uncomfortable it is to spend cold days and nights outside. But Lucky was rescued by Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI).

Museum seeking volunteers for limited-run exhibit, which opens Jan. 26

The Putnam aims to ensure its incoming exhibit, “Race: Are We So Different?” is fully utilized as a springboard to conversation and deeper understanding of equity and inclusion during its four-month run in our community.

A Community Team is working with the Putnam to best achieve this goal. It includes volunteer leaders from business; education; chamber; government; and not-for-profits.

AAA forecasts that more than one-third of Americans will travel this holiday season. The record-breaking 112.5 million travelers taking to the nation’s runways, roads and rails for the year-end holidays represents a 4.4 percent increase over last year and the most since AAA has been tracking holiday travel.

The Christmas tradition of “Julotta” continues at Bishop Hill State Historic Site, where the public is invited to gather for a nondenominational church service at 6:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, Tuesday, December 25.
