Sales benefit Child Abuse Council during Child Abuse Awareness Month

Throughout April, Child Abuse Awareness Month, several businesses in downtown Rock Island are donating a portion of proceeds to benefit Child Abuse Council. Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal financial services organization based in Rock Island, will match these donations, up to $1,000.

The participating businesses are:

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that he will be hosting an U.S. Service Academy Day on SATURDAY, April 14th at the Bettendorf Library. At the Service Academy Day, the Navy, Air Force and Army, along with University of Iowa’s Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC, will have representatives available to meet with students and their families about enrolling and attending a Service Academy.

Cedar Rapids, IA — The Cedar Rapids Kernels used a sacrifice fly with runners on the corners and nobody out in the bottom of the 10th inning to knock off the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night in Cedar Rapids.  The game was the first for the River Bandits with the new extra inning rules implemented by Minor League Baseball this season.

Rock Island, IL – This week, Rock Island Public Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating the many ways libraries lead their communities through transformative services, programs and expertise during the 60th anniversary of National Library Week.

In a jam-packed gallery on Thursday, April 5th, Quad City Arts announced the winners of the 41st Annual High School Art Invitational and presented more than $3000 in cash and gift certificates to area high school students and teachers for excellence in fine art.  This exhibition is made possible by the William Butterworth Foundation (the major sponsor of the event), The Deere Employees Credit Union and additional sponsors noted for individual awards.

A prime example of the Prairie School style of architecture made famous by Frank Llyod Wright, the Moline Commercial Club ©1912 is the only building built for the public in this style in our region.  The famous area architect, H.W. Whitsett, designed it for 6 stories. 3 stories were built in 1912.

The building had been built to house the commercial club started by Charles Deere, son of John Deere, in 1895.

Live statewide broadcast Wednesday, May 16, 7 p.m. Johnston, Iowa - Iowa Public Television will host an Iowa Press debate for the Iowa Democratic Gubernatorial Primary on Wednesday, May 16 at the Iowa Public Television studios in Johnston, Iowa. The 90 minute debate will begin at 7 p.m. in front of a live audience in the Maytag Auditorium. The program will air live on IPTV and be streamed online at Iptv.org.
