DENVER, COLORADO (April 30, 2020) — The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working to improve the environment and public-health conditions of low-income and minority communities through our daily efforts to ensure all Americans have clean air, safe water, and access to information to make decisions to protect personal and public health.

IOWA CITY, IOWA (April 30, 2020) — In these uncertain days of social-distancing and staying at home, Iowans are turning to their gardens in record numbers. Whether planting productive gardens for food security or planting flowers for beauty and solace (usually both), the numbers are up: Home-improvement centers across the nation and in Iowa have seen a jump in garden-product sales this spring, and local Master Gardener hotlines are fielding an increase in gardening questions.

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 30, 2020) — Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has filed five lawsuits this week in Black Hawk, Cerro Gordo, Delaware, and Des Moines counties over alleged violations of the “Iowa One Call” law.

Two of the lawsuits were resolved with defendants paying a civil penalty. In four of the cases, the defendants were alleged to have damaged underground natural-gas or water lines.

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 30, 2020) — The number of initial claims in Iowa, filed between Sunday, April 19, and Saturday, April 25, was 28,827. There were 27,115 initial claims by individuals who work and live in Iowa, and 1,712 claims by individuals who work in Iowa and live in another state. 

The number of continuing weekly unemployment claims was 170,990.

Unemployment insurance benefit payments totaled $51,408,623.02 for the same week. 

DAVENPORT, IOWA (April 30, 2020) — On April 29, The Quad Cities Chamber unveiled a new toolkit that provides best practices and suggested considerations to help businesses prepare to reopen safely when Iowa and Illinois health officials give them the green light.

DAVENPORT, IOWA (April 29, 2020) — Community health and dental centers across Iowa were each awarded $20,000 for a total of $360,000 in COVID-19 response-grants from Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. Funds awarded will help preserve access to care within Iowa’s safety-net infrastructure during this challenging time for many Iowans.

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 29, 2020) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announces a new statewide initiative to recruit poll workers for the June 2 primary. Normally, Iowa poll-workers tend to come from age-groups that are more vulnerable to COVID-19. This June, Sec Pate asks younger Iowans to step up and serve.
