SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS (January 2, 2020) — Each year, millions of people around the world welcome the start of a new year by making personal resolutions. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI), Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), and local emergency management agencies throughout Illinois are encouraging people to "Resolve to be Ready" for emergencies in 2020.

Most New Years resolutions are not honored for very long, but here is one that would be good for our lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to stick to: Stop short-changing the future because of an unwillingness to make responsible fiscal choices. The past few years have been an abomination when it comes to responsible federal budgeting. Let us review this here.

2019 was a busy year for budget policy, which gave us ample opportunities to conduct substantive policy analysis using charts and tables. This year, we published over 220 papers, blog posts, and other products. As we get ready to pop the champagne and ring in the new year (and decade), here are our top charts of 2019.

WASHINGTON DC (December 31, 2019) — Senator Charles "Chuck" Grassley (R-IA) marked a series of policy and oversight accomplishments of 2019.

“Serving the people of Iowa as their United States Senator is my first priority and it’s an honor that I take seriously. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and through my extensive oversight efforts, my work focuses on making government more transparent, efficient, and accountable to Iowans and all Americans,” Sen Grassley said.

JOHNSTON, IOWA (December 31, 2019) — IPTV Presents Conversations with Presidential Candidates Hosted by DMACC continues January 2, 2020, at 5:15PM in the Building 6 auditorium at DMACC's Ankeny campus with guest Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

As the calendar prepared to flip from 2019 to 2020, protesters stormed the US embassy in Baghdad. As I write this, the action — a response to US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria which killed at least 25 and wounded more than 50 — hasn't yet become a reprise of the Iran hostage crisis of 40 years ago, but it's eerily reminiscent. Although few Americans seem to notice, Iraq is arguably the second-longest war in US history.

“The people have the power, all we have to do is awaken that power in the people. The people are unaware. They’re not educated to realize that they have power. The system is so geared that everyone believes the government will fix everything. We are the government.” — John Lennon
