NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative invites everyone to celebrate its 5th anniversary at a “Night to BEAT the BIG O” gala on Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at Crow Valley Golf Club (4315 E 60th Street, Davenport, IA). Tickets are $60 per person, and the gala is open to men and women. The theme of the night is “Talk Teal,” and the money raised will fund ovarian cancer awareness and education programs as well as research.

The night will include live music by Soul Storm, food by Chef James, silent and live auctions and other activities. The dress is country club chic, and there will be a cash bar. “We encourage everyone to bring a friend and help us to celebrate our grass roots efforts and join us as we move forward with our mission to rise up against ovarian cancer,” said Jodie Shagrin Kavensky, the founder/CEO of NormaLeah.

Ovarian cancer has long been considered a “silent killer,” because the symptoms are subtle and advance slowly. It is hard to detect, difficult to treat, and there is no reliable screening test. All women are at risk for ovarian cancer and approximately 1 in 70 women will develop the disease during her lifetime.NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative, headquartered in Rock Island, empowers all women (and the men who love them) to know the risk factors and symptoms of ovarian cancer. The organization honors the memory of Mrs. Kavensky's mother, Norma Yecies Shagrin and her aunt, Leah Yecies Hantman, whose lives were cut short by this deadly disease. “Sisters share a lot of things, but ovarian cancer should not be one of them,” Kavensky said.
