DES MOINES, IA (04/29/2015)(readMedia)-- Once again, Governor Branstad is out of step with what Iowan's believe. A recently released Public Policy Poll cites Iowans over whelming opposition to the Governor's decision to close two mental health facilities in Iowa.

"Governor Branstad and House Republicans have demonstrated a callous disregard for their constituents. Time and again this session, they have marched through with their own opinions and failed to listen to what Iowans truly want which is to make this state a better place to work, live and raise a family," said ISEA President Tammy Wawro. "Cutting public education in K-12 and higher education institutions and closing two mental health care facilities clearly illustrates they do not care about those who need our advocacy the most -- our students and our mentally fragile. Sixty-eight percent of Iowa voters do not support the closings and thousands more do not support cuts to public education. It is time Governor Branstad and the House Republicans listen to the Iowans they represent," added Wawro.

The ISEA is a private, professional organization made up of over 34,000 educators who are dedicated to promoting and preserving public education for all Iowa students.

Exposing The Health Industry's Big Secret

Imagine suffering chronic pain - say, in the form of headaches or migraines.

Happily, you've found a solution to the problem. It has been several months of losing focus, sleep and general interest in the things you used to like. You went to a doctor and he told you an NTI device, which addresses jowl clenching during sleep, will offer immediate relief. Or maybe your family doctor gave you a pain-relief prescription for your headaches.

"As doctors, we like to have answers for our patient's problems, but misdiagnosis is one of our biggest problems in this country when it comes to chronic pain," says Dr. Fred Abeles, author of the book "Break Away: The New Method for Treating Chronic Headaches, Migraines and TMJ Without Medication" (www.FredAbeles.com).

"We're the 'microwave' generation and we like our problems to be solved immediately. Our medical profession has responded and is always geared for quick fixes. In reality, treating only the symptoms, and not the root cause, can worsen your problem."

For one, too many of us ignore the basics of good health, Abeles says.

"A huge volume of health problems would be eliminated if only people learned more about nutrition, modified their diets and got regular exercise each week," he says. "Cardio three times a week and some strength training - along with a reasonably healthy diet - would help millions tremendously."

There are many doctors you may see to help with your headache pain, he says, such as ENTs, dentists, neurologists, chiropractors, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) specialists and many more. Ask questions. If a dentist suggests realigning your jaw, for example, you'll want to make sure a thorough physiological work-up and diagnosis has been completed first. Be discerning. Be informed.

"Most doctors really want to help, but sometimes they're wrong," he says. "You have to be your own best health advocate."

Abeles offers what he calls his The H.E.A.L. Formula™.

•  HELP yourself - take control of your outcome. Don't accept chronic pain as a life sentence and stop taking pills to mask symptoms. When you improve your health, the lives of those around you improve also. There's more love, happiness and fun for everyone.

•  EVERYTHING is connected. The teeth. The joints. The tendons. The ligaments. The jaw. The head. The neck. The muscles. They all have to work together in harmony to not produce pain.

•  ALIGN the jaw. Align the bite. When everything is aligned, the muscles are happy. And happy muscles do not create pain.

•  LEARN about and utilize the new methods for successfully treating chronic headaches, migraines and TMJ without medication.

"The best time to address your chronic pain and what's behind it is the first time you experience it," Abeles says. "But if you've endured many months or years of pain - perhaps masking it with prescription drugs - then the second best time to uncover the cause is right now."

About Dr. Fred Abeles

Dr. Fred Abeles is known as one of the most sought after TMJ experts in the United States (www.FredAbeles.com). He's famous for getting results where others have failed and getting those results without the use of surgery, needles or drugs. He is author of the new book "Break Away: The New Method for Treating Chronic Headaches, Migraines and TMJ Without Medication." Abeles is the Clinical Instructor and Regional Director for the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies - one of the most prestigious post-graduate teaching centers in the world today. Dr. Abeles has been featured on NBC and CBS, consults with leading dental manufacturers on the development of new dental products, been on the cover of the profession's biggest magazines and instructed dentists throughout the United States and Canada on state-of-the-art techniques for treating headaches and temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

DES MOINES - Today, AFSCME Iowa Council 61 President Danny Homan issued the following statement about a recent Public Policy Polling poll on Governor Branstad's decision to close Clarinda and Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institutes:

"Iowans overwhelmingly oppose Governor Branstad's decision to close Clarinda and Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institutes. 68 percent oppose closing these facilities; only 12 percent support the closings.

"Throughout this entire process, Governor Branstad has ignored the voices of patients and their families, mental health professionals, law enforcement professionals, community leaders, and legislators. He has recklessly charged forward with his plan to close these facilities.

"This poll makes it clear: Iowans oppose these closures. The Governor needs to start listening to Iowans, put mental health services first, and stop barreling towards closing these facilities with no real plan to replace the services they provide to Iowans facing mental health challenges."

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (April 28, 2015) – On April 27, 2015, Hy-Vee, Inc. issued a recall for Hy-Vee Summer Fresh Pasta Salad that is sold in its stores' kitchen department cold cases and salad bars. The pasta was recalled after Hy-Vee was notified the frozen vegetables used to make the ready-to-eat pasta were potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The Summer Fresh Pasta Salad is packaged upon customer request from the kitchen cold case and would have been packaged in 16oz. (1 lb.) or 32oz. (2 lb.) clear plastic containers. A light tan scale-produced label with the product name, weight and price would have been affixed to the container.

The recalled product would have been available in a limited number of stores between April 9, 2015 and April 27, 2015.

Hy-Vee has since pulled the ready-to-eat Summer Fresh Pasta Salad from its distribution channels and the stores in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota to which it was distributed. All stores that received the product have been instructed to dispose of the product.

Martial Artist Simon Morrell Explores His Journey From Bullied To Black Belt

Renowned martial artist Simon Morrell is spreading a message of hope to those who have or continue to suffer intimidation with his book "From Bullied to Black Belt."

"No matter how bad you may be suffering at the hands of bullies, there is hope and a positive way forward," he says. "You can take courage into your own hands and follow a path similar to mine, from bullied to black belt."

"From Bullied to Black Belt" is the true, sometimes harrowing and always emotional story of a man's arc, which ultimately became triumphant. Morrell was at the receiving end of endless bullying, which began when he was a small child and lasted as he matured into adulthood. As the attacks escalated - to the point where he was attacked with a knife - he became chronically withdrawn and felt destined to live the life of a scared, meek man, a man afraid to leave his house and not daring to expand past his small comfort zone.

However, something within him refused to accept defeat and, with the help of his wife, the mild-mannered man embarked upon a journey in Martial Arts. His original goal was to try to find confidence. It turned out that Morrell not only had the motivation, but also the talent to succeed in Martial Arts. He would become one of the U.K.'s leading Fight Masters - obtaining 6th Dan Black Belt and twice being entered into the Hall of Fame.

"From Bullied To Black Belt" - while written by a Martial Artist - is much more than a book about Martial Arts. It is a story of a man finding himself when all seemed lost. It's a love story that may break the reader's heart. It is a story that will leave you in tears, but it is a story that will eventually leave you inspired.

A film of the book is now in development with a film studio in the United Kingdom, renamed "From Bullied to Black Belt."

About Simon Morrell

Simon Morrell is one of the United Kingdom's leading Martial Artists and Inspirational Speakers, but his success was come by hard. As a young child he was badly bullied, and that evolved into violent assaults as he got older. An attempted stabbing took place by a vicious youth during a particularly frightening period, and further beatings followed. Morrell became agoraphobic and suffered from life-changing panic attacks before deciding he had endured enough. He entered the world of Martial Arts to gain confidence and quickly surprised himself and his loved ones by excelling in it. Today, he holds multiple Black Belts, including 6th Dan Karate and Dan Grade Krav Maga as well as being a two-time Hall of Fame winner. He speaks throughout the UK about his troubles and victories and his story is currently being made into the film "From Bullied to Black Belt" in the United Kingdom. He has spoken in the International Press and on the BBC about his experiences.

By Dr. John Clifford, USDA Chief Veterinary Officer

Today I had a press call with our USDA partner, Dr. Alicia Fry from CDC and Dr. David Swayne of USDA's Southeast Poultry Research Lab to help get out some important information about the avian influenza event currently occurring in the United States.

Since December 2014, USDA has confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 in the Pacific, Central and Mississippi Flyways (migratory paths for birds). The disease has been found in wild birds, as well as in some backyard and commercial poultry flocks.

There are three important things that you need to know about this situation:

  1. Our food supply is safe. Food is safe because the United States has the strongest AI surveillance system in the world. We actively look for the disease, educate the public and producers on the most appropriate practices to ensure their health and safety, as well as provide compensation to affected producers to encourage disease reporting.
  2. The risk to humans is low. No human infections with these viruses have been detected, and the CDC considers the risk to people from these HPAI H5 infections in wild birds, backyard flocks, and commercial poultry to be low.
  3. USDA will continue to do everything it can to support states and producers. We are coordinating closely with State officials and other Federal departments on rigorous surveillance, reporting, and control efforts. At the same time, USDA will continue to work with Congress to ensure that we are able to provide a much-needed safety net to the poultry producers who are experiencing economic hardships as a result of losses due to the disease.

Along with industry, USDA and its Federal and State partners are responding quickly and decisively to these outbreaks. You can learn more about the situation and USDA's response by listening to a recording of the press conference: http://www.usda.gov/documents/usda-cdc-media-call.mp3.

You too can help by continuing to practice good biosecurity if you own birds. All birds owners, whether commercial producers or backyard enthusiasts, should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds and report sick birds or unusual birds deaths to State/Federal officials, either through their state veterinarian or through USDA's toll-free number at 1-866-536-7593.

Learn more about biosecurity for backyard flocks at http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov. More information about USDA avian influenza efforts is available at http://www.usda.gov/avian_influenza.html.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after it was confirmed that another outbreak of avian flu has been discovered in Northwest Iowa.

"With the second confirmation of avian flu in Iowa, it is more important than ever that Iowa has all the resources it needs to prevent it from spreading any further. While there is currently no risk to people consuming poultry, stopping the spread quickly is necessary to safeguard both the health of Iowans and the egg producing industry. I will continue to closely monitor the situation and work to ensure local and state governments have the resources necessary to combat this dangerous disease and protect the public's health."

The Quad City health community - Community Health Care, Inc., Genesis Health System, Quad City Health Initiative, Rock Island County Health Department, Scott County Health Department and UnityPoint Health - Trinity - have partnered to complete a community health needs assessment of Rock Island and Scott Counties to identify and address health needs. To gain community input about health needs that impact individuals and their families, the partners have developed a community-wide survey that they are asking Rock Island and Scott County residents to complete by Thursday, April 30.

The survey asks about a range of health issues, including promoting healthy living, preventing injuries, and community preparedness, among other issues, and asks members of the community to choose what they believe to be the issues facing Rock Island and Scott County families.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete and is available on each of the partners' websites. The survey can also be made available in print by contacting the following individuals:

Brooke Hendrickx | Rock island County Health Department, 309-793-1955; bhendrickx@co.rock-island.il.us

Tiffany Tjepkes | Scott County Health Department, 563-326-8618;  tiffany.tjepkes@scottcountyiowa.com

In addition to the community survey, the Rock Island and Scott County health departments will host a series of stakeholder events to get direct feedback from community partners and the public involved in serving the residents of Rock Island and Scott Counties. Interested community members have the opportunity to sign-up for these events at the end of the survey. "We are hoping to get as much input as possible from the community to determine what they feel their needs are," said Nita Ludwig, Public Health Administrator, Rock Island County Health Department. "It's an opportunity for residents to voice their opinion to help impact their community."

The feedback from the community survey and stakeholder events will help the health community partners identify and prioritize the health needs of the Quad City community. This information will then help to create health improvement plans that will address those needs in the community in the upcoming years.
