KWQC-TV6 revealed this morning on Quad Cities Today that current weekend meteorologist Kevin Phelps will replace Greg Dutra as the station's weekday morning meteorologist.

Greg Dutra made the announcement during his weathercast saying, "When I went to management and told them hey I have this job offer in Denver....obviously we're going to have to find a replacement.  This was my personal recommendation."

Phelps has been weekend meteorologist at TV6 since February 2011.  He will begin his new role as Quad Cities Today meteorologist December 1st.

"Kevin's hard work and experience made him a natural to replace Greg Dutra.  His knowledge forecasting in the Quad Cities and his great relationship with David and Morgan will let him continue the great tradition Quad Cities Today has established," said KWQC-TV6 News Director Rich Kurz.  "Losing Greg is tough - and we wish him well - but I'm confident our viewers will be in great hands with Kevin."

Greg Dutra's last day on air will be November 28th.  He was offered and accepted what he calls a "dream job" in Denver, CO at KDVR/KWGN.
Author bases book on family's experiences

SALT LAKE CITY – Francesco is a typical child, until one day he learns that he possesses the power to create his own happiness. In her new children's book, "You Are a Powerful Creator, My Little One," by Monica Iglesias, young readers discover where positivity begins, and how Francesco is able to create it in his own life.

Inspired by actual events, Francesco's story teaches a universal message emphasizing that no matter what the readers' background is, they are in control of their own experience. By informing children how to take charge of their own destiny, Iglesias helps her audience take accountability for their future.

"Through a series of inquiring questions, the mother in this story facilitates her son to discover how to create what he wants through choice, intent, behavior, and evaluation," said Penelope Eicher, a licensed marriage and family therapist. "The child discovers how choice and accountability generates well-being."

In order to deliver her message accurately, Iglesias observed events that had happened within her family. By working with her own children, the author has created a book that readers of all ages can benefit from.

"Children love feeling empowered and making their own decisions," said Iglesias. "My desire is to empower children, youth and adults alike to consciously create a happy life for themselves, their families and positively influence the world around them. A waterfall begins with a single drop."

Mediacom Business provides over 5,000 fiber route miles in Iowa, connecting more than 2,500 locations with speeds up to 10 Gigabits per second

Des Moines, Iowa - November 13, 2014 - Speaking yesterday at a meeting of the Mid-Iowa Association of Local Governments (MIALG), Mark Finch, Senior Director, Mediacom Business, said the company is cultivating commercial growth and development in rural communities across America's Heartland through the continued expansion of a high capacity fiber optic network. Gigabit+ Fiber Solutions™ from Mediacom Business delivers a new broadband standard for large and small businesses, healthcare facilities, schools, libraries and other local anchor institutions. Moreover, Mediacom Business makes accessing its high-capacity broadband easy and cost-effective by managing and monitoring the network, thereby eliminating the need for cities to employ additional resources.

Mr. Finch told mayors from twenty cities in the Metro Des Moines Area, along with numerous Iowa State Legislators, that his company has over 5,000 fiber route miles already in service in Iowa. This expansive network, said Finch, connects more than 2,500 locations, and is capable of delivering speeds up to 10 Gigabits per second.

"While companies like Google are making promises to build these networks in large metropolitan areas, Mediacom Business' fiber-optic network is already in place right here in Iowa. We're delivering speeds of one Gigabit and beyond to business customers of every size over our proprietary, fiber-optic network," Mr. Finch said.

The City of Grimes, one of the fastest growing areas in Iowa, has approximately 400 small-to-medium sized businesses. Grimes is an excellent example of how Mediacom Business partners with municipalities to build the critical broadband infrastructure that powers economic development. According to Mr. Finch, "Mediacom Business is inviting other cities to have these conversations with us so we can replicate these public/private relationships in more areas." He added, "Increasingly, Central Iowa is attracting attention from IT companies, web developers, call centers, and data centers who demand the reliability, speed and redundancy our Gigabit+ Fiber Solutions™ platform can provide. You could say we're a one-stop shop in meeting the needs of every customer, no matter their size."

DAVENPORT ? More than you might imagine ? that is if the condition of your drinking water is a concern. Local novelist Joan Mauch first heard the term "waterkeeper" when she read about it in the newspaper. "The term puzzled me as I had never heard it before," she said. The article featured Art Norris, the Quad-Cities' waterkeeper. "We had our very own waterkeeper? And what exactly was he doing with our water? To me sounded a bit odd."
Upon digging, Mauch learned the term, "waterkeeper" refers to an organization affiliated with the Waterkeeper Alliance, an international organization that unites almost 200 independent nonprofits funded by donations and grants.
According to Marc Yaggi, director of global programs for the New York-based Waterkeeper Alliance, waterkeepers wear a lot of hats including that of scientist, investigator and community advocate. "The ultimate goal is to ensure their community's right to clean water is upheld," Yagi said.
Waterkeeper Norris said the organization's purpose was to be the eyes and ears of the Mississippi River. His duties include looking for water pollution issues, specifically those that impact the Mississippi from Clinton to Muscatine or any part of the Rock River and finding ways to address the problems.
Mauch contacted Mr. Norris and to her dismay learned that our regulatory authority isn't protecting our drinking water. "He said that in many cases they actually aid in covering up the polluter. It's all about money."
According to Norris, we need waterkeepers to oversee what regulators are allowing. "Illinois has four of the most polluted rivers in the nation. Iowa has 624 lakes, rivers and streams unfit for human use. To me it's about leaving a better place for our children. They won't have much of a chance if we don't change this," he said.
Thinking there could be a novel in there somewhere, Ms. Mauch asked if being a waterkeeper was dangerous.
Mr. Norris said he's been attacked and threatened many times. "They killed my dog. Scared my wife to death. I have three daughters and a son. The polluter and friends sent me a Father's Day card. I understood this was threat. It's a heavy price to pay. It's not for everyone. Maybe your book will bring things to light."
Joan Mauch's latest novel, "The Waterkeeper's Daughter" ($3.99 e-book, $16.95 paperback, Whiskey Creek Press and Start Publishing), is a mystery about revenge, murder and reconciliation. A man wants to get even for the havoc wreaked on his family and their farm caused by the spraying of pesticides. All his life, Harold Johnson has suffered for what that crop duster did; now it's his turn to grieve. First he'll target the guy's son, Lake Okeechobee's waterkeeper, Craig Whitaker, then he'll go after his pretty daughter, Annie. And he'll make it perfectly clear what he's doing ? and why. CT Whitaker will learn the meaning of the word, "regret" ? but by then, it will be too late. "The Waterkeeper's Daughter" will appeal to those who enjoy a good mystery along with a brief look at the sorry state of our nation's waterways.
"It fires me up because I have been on missions where you wonder if you will make it back," Mr. Norris said. "We risk our lives to save our rivers, It's sad it has to be this way. That's why we need a following to be effective." If you would like to volunteer or donate to the QC Waterkeeper's movement, visit the Quad Cities Waterkeeper's website at: http://www.quadcitieswaterkeeperuppermississippi.org/links_resources.html
On Nov. 25, "The Waterkeeper's Daughter" will be released as an e-book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Whiskey Creek Press' website: whiskeycreekpress.com. The paperback may be ordered on the author's website at joanmauch.com or through the publisher. Ms. Mauch's earlier novels include : "Halifax" (2013) and "The Mangled Spoon" (2014) also published by Whiskey Creek Press. Visit her website at www.joanmauch.com, her Facebook author page at facebook.com/joanmauch.author or follow her on Twitter.
Mark your calendar! Book signings are scheduled for Nov. 22 at South Park Mall from 1-4; The Book Rack in Davenport from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 6, 4764 Elmore Ave Drive; and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the Moline Book Rack, 3937 41st Ave.
Waterkeeper Art Norris and Joan will give a joint presentation at Read Local, a program sponsored by the Bettendorf Library on Feb. 11, 2015 from 7-9:00 p.m. He will discuss the Waterkeepers' movement, its role in protecting the Mississippi River and how to get involved. Joan will talk about writing "The Waterkeeper's Daughter" and read a chapter from it.

Author Cindy Kolbo illustrates Book of Colossians to help readers memorize Scriptures

CANISTOTA, S.D. - Author Cindy Kolbo knows how difficult understanding the Scriptures can be for visual learners. In an effort to help them, Kolbo releases her illustrated new book, "Memory Helper for the Book of Colossians" (published by WestBow Press), to share the messages of the Bible in a creative and innovative way.

The drawings in "Memory Helper for the Book of Colossians" recreate moments from the Book of Colossians from the King James Bible. Each drawing is kept simple so as not to distract readers from the message of the passage and to aid in memorization and understanding.

Kolbo also includes an accompanying explanation of each drawing along with detailed Greek word definitions, originally translated in James Strong's book "Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible." With practice and memorization, readers will be able to better comprehend the Scripture and its many meanings.

"This book may appeal to those who would like a tool for their own study or for those who are teaching," Kolbo writes. "My hope would be that this book would aid in understanding the Scripture and loving it."
