DES MOINES, IOWA (January 3, 2023) — There is a form of slavery taking place in Iowa right now. It’s called human trafficking, and it occurs when men, women, or children are forced to perform labor services or sexual acts. This horrific crime affects thousands of people across the US, and it can happen to anyone. The State of Iowa is taking steps to raise awareness about human trafficking and put an end to this danger, but we need your help.

MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS (December 22, 2022) — Fifteen years ago, famous actor Richard Thomas walked into a Boston gift shop co-owned and managed by 1971 Monmouth College graduate Mark Duffield.

Rather than ask the actor who portrayed John-Boy on the TV show The Waltons for his autograph, Duffield instead described a project he was planning to Thomas, who helped him add a vital piece to the elaborate puzzle.

The annual Most Endangered list is our longest-running advocacy program that calls attention to historic and culturally-significant sites across the state that are threatened with deterioration, demolition, or inappropriate development.

DES MOINES, IOWA (December 7, 2022) — Complaints and information requests to the Iowa Office of Ombudsman rose for the eighth consecutive year in fiscal year 2022, eclipsing a record high number received just a year earlier.

In total, Iowa’s good-government office fielded 6,484 contacts in FY 2022 — an increase of almost sixty percent since FY2014. During that same period of time, complaints from inmates in Iowa’s state prisons and county jails have tripled.

DAVENPORT, IOWA (December 2, 2022) — On Thursday, December 1, 2022 at approximately 6:22PM, the Scott Emergency Communication Center received a call of a single-vehicle accident in the area of the 26500 block of 257th St, Princeton, Iowa. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene, and an investigation was conducted.

DES MOINES, IOWA (November 21, 2022) — For the eighth year running, The Des Moines Turkey Trot will welcome runners from across the country for a Thanksgiving morning 5K, 5 Mile, and Tot Trot run in the heart of downtown. Nearly 5,000 runners from 37 states are expected to attend this year’s event which has been named one of the “Top Trot’s in the Country” by Runner’s World Magazine.
