Members of the Moline Rotary Club donated 549 mittens, gloves, scarves and hats this week to help keep children in the Moline School District warm during the coming winter months. These items will be donated to twelve Moline-Coal Valley Elementary Schools and Jefferson Early Childhood Center for use by students who do not have warm weather attire or who have forgetten theirs at home.

"Moline Rotarians continue to give back to the community through programs such as Warm Hands from Kind Hearts," says Deni McCarter, President of Moline Rotary. "I appreciate the generosity of Moline Rotarians to help make sure younger students in Moline and Coal Valley public schools can stay warm this winter".

2014 marks the 5th Annual "Warm Hands from Kind Hearts" initiative within Moline Rotary. The Moline Rotary Community Needs Committee continuously identifies additional opportunities to impact the citizens within the city of Moline and the Rock Island County area. "Moline Rotary and our 130 members celebrate our 100th anniversary of service to the community in 2014," said McCarter. The club also supports numerous service projects in the Quad Cities and through Rotary International."

Due to the record-breaking cold weather, Moline Rotarians have delivered the collected items to the schools earlier than their usual scheduled delivery during the first week of December.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Camp Courageous has joined #GivingTuesday, a global effort to harness the collective power of charities, families, businesses, and individuals to transform how people participate in the giving season. Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks, Black Friday is for Sales, Cyber Monday is for Getting Deals, and now there is Giving Tuesday. #Giving Tuesday will inspire people to take action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to causes they support and help create a better world.

This year #GivingTuesday takes place on December 2, 2014 - the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Since #GivingTuesday was first celebrated in 2012, the number of organizations participating has increased substantially. Today more than 10,000 organizations have joined the movement, with the help of the United Nations Foundation. Together, these organizations are providing creative ways for people to embrace #GivingTuesday with meaningful results.

The mayors of Cedar Rapids, Monticello, Dyersville, Manchester, Hopkinton, and other communities have signed official proclamations declaring December 2nd "Giving Tuesday".

Camp Courageous has joined #GivingTuesday to help promote the spirit of giving to great causes. For 40 years Camp Courageous has provided recreational and respite opportunities for individuals with disabilities in a unique outdoor recreational setting. Camp Courageous would not exist without the giving spirit of thousands of volunteers and donors.

"Giving Tuesday is a reminder that the spirit of holiday giving is about community, " said Amatullah Richard, Communications Director with Camp Courageous. "The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends, and neighbors is to work together to make sure opportunities are extended to everyone."

To celebrate the spirit of giving, Camp Courageous will feature #UNselfies on the Camp Courageous Facebook page in the days leading up to #GivingTuesday and on December 2nd. #UNselfies are pictures of individuals who volunteer and/or donate holding a sign stating why they give to camp. A sample is attached. Individuals are encouraged to print out an #UNselfie sheet, customize it, and send their own #UNselfie to archard@campcourageous.org to be featured on the camp Facebook page. They can access this page by going to:   #GivingTuesday

November 19, 2014 (Quad Cities) - The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Toy Collection is underway. Paper angel tags listing the age, gender and toy ideas are available at these locations:

CURRENTLY: All four Quad Cities area Wal-Marts and Schnucks Market

STARTING Friday, November 28th: NorthPark Mall in the JCPenney Court and SouthPark Mall in the von Maur Court. Hours will be 11am - 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 11pm - 5pm on Sunday.

Anyone wanting to participate can select an angel tag from the tree and purchase a gift for a child. New, unwrapped toys for a child, along with the original tag can be returned to any Angel Tree location. The last day you can choose an angel is December 15 to allow time for distribution by The Salvation Army.

Major Gary A. This small gesture of purchasing a toy for a child can help to make another person's life less overwhelming."

There are no words to describe the pain of losing a child, but Jayna Lindell of Milan, IL, has found a way to help. She makes infant burial gowns from donated wedding dresses. Royal Neighbors of America will now help Jayna by surprising her with a check for $2,250 from its Nation of NeighborsSM Program to expand her efforts and comfort even more families.

Jayna lost her daughter, Lila, at birth. When Lila was brought to her, the baby was wearing a boy's outfit. Jayna didn't want other parents to have that type of lasting impression so she began donating dresses to area hospitals. Today, she is turning her idea into a non-profit, Lila's Dresses, through which she and other volunteers create hand-made burial gowns from wedding dresses. The gowns are gift-wrapped and include a special note from Jayna.

The Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa are launching their thirty-fourth annual Cent-A-Gallon Day for Camp Courageous on Wednesday, November 26, 2014.  One-cent out of every gallon of petroleum product sold on the day before Thanksgiving by participating marketers will go to Camp Courageous.

Camp Courageous is a year-round recreation and respite care facility for individuals with disabilities. Run on donations, nearly 7,000 are served annually.

On this day, participating Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores will give thanks by contributing one-cent from every gallon of petroleum product to Camp Courageous. "The day before Thanksgiving was picked 34-years ago," according to Charlie Becker, the camp's executive director, "because both Camp Courageous and the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores felt we have an awful lot to be thankful for and it was the perfect time to give thanks for all our blessings."

Posters will be displayed in the windows of participating Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores to distinguish them as participants.  The Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa encourage everyone to join with their local petroleum marketer to give thanks this Thanksgiving, by helping Camp Courageous on the day before.

###

We are encouraging the media throughout the state to once again get involved with their local petroleum marketer and convenience stores by pumping gas or cleaning windows on Cent-A-Gallon Day. This gives the customer, an advertiser (or potential advertiser), and families in need, a good feeling about your interest in helping Iowa's nearly 7,000 individuals with disabilities that come to camp each year. Thank you for your consideration.

Representatives from Royal Neighbors of America surprised Kit Evans-Ford, Rock Island, with a check for $5,000 from its Nation of NeighborsSM Program . Founder of Testimonies of Hope: The Intercultural Christian Devotional Community, Kit also established Overcoming the S.T.O.R.M.: A Program for Women Healing from Sexual Violence. The funds will help Kit launch retreats and an annual conference for girls and women focused on using the arts for healing and hope; further develop her inspirational social media sites; and expand her S.T.O.R.M. program with a webinar series.
Kit, a survivor of sexual assault herself, has worked relentlessly in service to women and girls in the U. S. and around the world. She is a former international development worker who has met many inspiring people in her travels. As a result, she has brought hundreds of individuals together through Testimonies of Hope, an online community that provides safe spaces for women of all ages to share their stories. Through her various programs, she empowers women and girls to build their self-esteem, self-worth, personal growth, and community leadership.
