Quad Cities loses consecutive games for first time since July 21, sits 2 1/2 games behind Cedar Rapids

CLINTON, Iowa (AUG. 14, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits overcame a 4-0, first-inning deficit Wednesday night, but they later lost leads of 5-4 and 7-6 and did not score after the fourth inning, as the Clinton LumberKings rallied for a 9-7 victory at Ashford University Field.

Quad Cities (30-20 second half, 68-51 overall) played its highest scoring game - 16 runs - since July 7 and has lost consecutive games for the first time since July 21. The loss pushed the River Bandits 2 ½ games behind first-place Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League Western Division standings. Clinton (25-26, 58-62) won its third straight game.

In the first inning, River Bandits left-hander Josh Hader allowed consecutive doubles by LumberKings shortstop Brock Hebert and second baseman Tim Lopes for a 1-0 deficit. Hader walked the next three batters, and a wild pitch scored a run before a strikeout. A bases-loaded hit batter, strikeout and fourth walk in the inning made it 4-0, before right-hander Daniel Minor took over for the final out.

River Bandits third baseman Rio Ruiz homered to lead off the second inning against right-hander Rigoberto Garcia. In the third inning, right fielder Teoscar Hernandez, shortstop Carlos Correa, left fielder Danry Vasquez and first baseman Bobby Borchering hit four consecutive singles. With two outs, designated hitter Terrell Joyce hit a two-run double to left-center field for a 5-4 Quad Cities lead.

The LumberKings retook the lead in the bottom of the third, as catcher Marcus Littlewood and first baseman Taylor Ard hit consecutive doubles, and second baseman Tim Lopes hit a go-ahead, two-out single for a 6-5 Clinton lead.

In the Quad Cities fourth inning, second baseman Austin Elkins walked, and center fielder Tony Kemp hit a single, before both advanced on Hernandez's sacrifice. Correa then hit a single through the middle to bring in both runners for a 7-6 River Bandits advantage.

After Minor completed 3 1/3 innings with two runs allowed, right-hander Patrick Christensen pitched a scoreless fifth but allowed the tying run in the sixth, as a walk and hit batter put the tying run in scoring position, and Elkins' error allowed the tying run to score.

In the seventh inning, River Bandits right-hander Zach Morton allowed three straight hits, including a go-ahead single by center fielder Alfredo Morales. The LumberKings added a run in the eighth when Ard hit an RBI single.

Right-hander Richard Vargas got the final two outs of the eighth inning with the tying run in scoring position and earned his second save.

The River Bandits continue the series in Clinton at 7 p.m. Thursday. River Bandits right-hander Lance McCullers (6-5) is scheduled to face LumberKings left-hander Scott DeCecco (9-8).

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday publication of a notice of proposed rulemaking to remove references to type codes in its regulations on the carriage and labeling of Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs).

PFD type codes are unique to Coast Guard approval and are not well understood by the general public. The current PFD type code classification system is planned to be redesigned to focus on performance criteria rather than construction standards. A new easy-to-understand label concept is intended to help both professional mariners and recreational boaters select the best device for their intended uses and routes.

Removal of the current PFD type codes from carriage and labeling requirements would assist future incorporation by reference of new industry consensus standards for PFD labeling that will more effectively convey safety information without the use of type codes, and is a step toward harmonization of Coast Guard regulations with PFD requirements in Canada and other countries.

"Lifejackets that are currently Coast Guard-approved and serviceable are still perfectly safe to use and are not made obsolete by the proposed standards. This rule simply streamlines the use of PFD type codes to pave the way for future alignmetn wtih one international standard," said Brandi Baldwin, P.E., Lifesaving and Fire Safety Division, Office of Design and Engineering Standards at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters.

The notice of proposed rulemaking and related materials may be reviewed at www.regulations.gov, docket number: USCG-2013-0263.

Nationwide voting for 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Award places Quad Cities venue first

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 14, 2013) - After four weeks of nationwide voting by fans and readers of 10Best.com and USA TODAY, Modern Woodmen Park, the home of the Quad Cities River Bandits, is the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in the 2013 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards. USA TODAY and 10Best.com announced the Top 10 ballparks Wednesday.

Modern Woodmen Park received the most votes from readers, fans and the general public nationwide among 20 nominated ballparks. The nominees were chosen by a panel of experts from USA TODAY, 10Best.com, and other contributors and sources for other Gannett properties. Throughout the competition, Quad Cities residents, visitors, fans, media and public leaders supported the campaign for a venue that has been frequently recognized nationwide as a unique destination for Minor League Baseball and family entertainment.

"This is a great honor that belongs to the City of Davenport, the mayors and city leaders from all of the Quad Cities, and people all throughout this great region," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "Their constant and enthusiastic support of this club and this great ballpark continues to overwhelm and gratify us. But we will never rest on any laurels - we will continue to work to constantly improve and make even better this baseball diamond that has become the crown jewel of the Midwest and the nation."

"This designation affirms what we in the Quad Cities have known all along, that Modern Woodman Park, 'A jewel along the Mississippi,' is the most beautiful minor league park in the world," said Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba. "This national recognition serves as one more sign that our Rivervision plan, to make Davenport's Riverfront the most spectacular and magnificent between New Orleans and Minneapolis/St. Paul, is coming to fruition."

The River Bandits will host a special recognition for the Quad Cities community prior to the team's next home game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. At every River Bandits game through the end of the 2013 season, fans can sign a banner naming Modern Woodmen Park the "Best Minor League Ballpark". The banner will be permanently hung inside Modern Woodmen Park.

In addition, the River Bandits will celebrate the ballpark's No. 1 ranking by offering $1 general admission tickets to the 7 p.m. game Monday, Aug. 19, with upgrades available for $1 more.

Modern Woodmen Park, which opened in 1931 as Davenport Municipal Stadium and was previously known as John O'Donnell Stadium, is the oldest stadium used continuously by a current Minor League Baseball team for more than 50 years. The current Midwest League franchise has played in it continuously since 1960, and more than seven million fans have passed through its gates in that time.

As the River Bandits ownership, Main Street Baseball has brought the stadium several improvements - including the Sky Deck, Pepsi Loge Boxes, the DHCU On-Deck, the Crop Production Services Corn Field, a new high-definition video board and LED ribbon board. Earlier this season, Main Street Amusements opened a FlyWireTM dual zip line by Extreme Engineering, and a Mediacom Frog Hopper by S&S Worldwide, as part of a growing amusement lineup, including a new 112-foot tall Ferris wheel and carousel, that will continue arriving through next season.

UP NEXT: The first 2,000 fans to Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night will receive a bobblehead of Minnesota Twins first baseman and former River Bandit Justin Morneau, courtesy of Mediacom and the Dispatch-Argus. The 7 p.m. game kicks off a seven-game home stand through Friday, Aug. 23. Single-game tickets are on sale at the River Bandits box office at Modern Woodmen Park, by phone at  563-324-3000 and online at www.riverbandits.com. Season ticket and mini-plan packages start at just seven games and begin at less than $50. Call a River Bandits account representative today to choose your seats and get the details of our various mini-plan packages.

ABOUT THE BANDITS: The River Bandits ownership is making one of the biggest improvements to Modern Woodmen Park since the ballpark was first built back in 1931! A new Ferris wheel, standing 112 feet over the playing field, is planned for next spring, along with a carousel and other new games and attractions. This season, the team just unveiled a new 300-foot long dual zip line, a rock climbing wall, a Mediacom Frog Hopper, and a number of new bounce houses. The team also boasts a new major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, and fans can see the first team in Minor League Baseball history with back-to-back No. 1 overall draft picks - 2012 top pick Carlos Correa and 2013 top pick Mark Appel, as well as 2012 first-round draft choice Lance McCullers. With new rides, new attractions, new improvements, a new affiliate and future major league stars, the second half of this season is one every fan will not want to miss!

Quad Cities loses first series in three weeks but remains 1 1/2 games behind Cedar Rapids

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 12, 2013) - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers right-hander Austin Ross kept the Quad Cities River Bandits hitless for 5 1/3 innings, while his offense scored seven runs on 10 hits in the third and fourth innings combined, building a lead that stood for a 9-1 victory in front of 2,292 at Modern Woodmen Park Monday night.

The Timber Rattlers had 15 hits, and five players had multi-hit games, led by second baseman Alfredo Rodriguez, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Rodriguez doubled to start the third inning against Quad Cities right-hander Mark Appel (1-1), who had retired the first six batters he faced. Catcher Tyler Roberts singled to put runners at first and third bases, and shortstop Orlando Arcia hit into a fielder's choice that brought in the first run. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor singled, and left fielder Michael Reed hit an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, right fielder Max Walla hit a leadoff double against Appel. First baseman Parker Berberet singled to put runners at first and third bases, and Rodriguez added an RBI single on the first three pitches of the inning. Roberts made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly, and Arcia singled and went to second base with the throw from the outfield. Center fielder then hit a two-run double, extending the margin to 6-0 and ending Appel's night after 3 1/3 innings. Left-hander Mitchell Lambson allowed Taylor to score on third baseman Mike Garza's RBI single, setting the nine hits and seven runs as the highest totals against Appel in any of his eight professional starts.

Lambson worked the next three innings for Quad Cities (30-19 second half, 68-50 overall) and kept the Timber Rattlers (22-28, 51-64) from extending the lead. His 3 2/3 innings tied his longest outing of the season.

Meanwhile, Ross (1-0) retired the first 11 River Bandits and gave up the first baserunner on his only walk to shortstop Carlos Correa with two outs in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, third baseman Austin Elkins hit a one-out single for the team's first and only hit against Ross, who recorded four strikeouts.

The Timber Rattlers bullpen opened with right-hander Chris Razo, who allowed an infield single to River Bandits catcher Roberto Pena and RBI double by Elkins in the eighth inning for the home team's only run. Lef-thander Taylor Wall worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Right-hander Jamaine Cotton allowed an unearned run in each of the eighth and ninth innings. Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Rodriguez in the eighth, and Berberet hit an RBI single to score first baseman Matt Garza for a 9-1 lead. It was the largest score by a River Bandits opponent since Cedar Rapids scored 12 runs June 12. Wisconsin was the first team in three weeks to win a series over Quad Cities. The River Bandits had won a season-high five straight series since losing two of three in Lake County July 20-22.

After the last off day of the season Tuesday, the River Bandits start a three-game series in Clinton at 7 p.m. Wednesday. River Bandits left-hander Josh Hader (1-0) is scheduled to face LumberKings right-hander Rigoberto Garcia (0-4).

And now for the "News" . . .
Adam Condit ultra running in 2013.  Adam ran Grand Canyon Rim to Rim double crossing in April, solo.  He was ready for a competitive 50 mile trail race debut at Devil's Lake (July 13, WI).  Adam recounts, "A fun but somewhat bittersweet ultra marathon ... finally hunting down first place by mile 35.  I led from there to mile 48 where I was passed (quickly) going uphill.  I finished 2nd overall in 7hr 23min in one of the Midwest's most rugged ultras around Devil's Lake.  I felt dialed in with nutrition and energy, but the relentless up and down trashed my legs before really having to slow down the last 5-6 miles."  Adam plans another 50 miler near Madison this fall, a more rolling and smooth course.
Danna Herrick ran Have a Hearth 5K (West Des Moines, July 27) in winning in 18:21.  Nate Hopp won the Swisher 5K (Aug. 3) in 16:22, Phil Young was 2nd in 17:06.  Robyn Friedman continues here comeback at the M.A.M.M. 10K (Monroe, Aug. 10) winning in 38:20.  Husband and wife team finished 2nd male and female at the Kraut Route 5K (Lisbon, Aug. 10) - Dan Schofer ran 17:14 and Marie Schofer 18:37.
Iowan Diane Nukuri-Johnson continues to race with the best, this time in the Northeast.  At the Beach to Beacon 10K (ME, Aug. 4) she set a personal record running 32:36.  A week later at 41st Falmouth 7 mile (MA, Aug. 11) she was 4th in 37:16.
Kudos to any runner that gives up their running to put on a race.  Double kudos for any race director that times and scores a modest sized race.  Runners Colleen Webb and Paul Grinvalds (West Des Moines, July 27) each did an admiral job creating results at their 200-250 finisher races.  The key was reasonable expectations and awards.  Thanks Colleen and Paul, demonstrating "how it's done simply, cost free".

Quad Cities turns second triple play of the season and remains 1 1/2 games behind Cedar Rapids

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 11, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits center fielder Teoscar Hernandez homered twice to drive in all five of the team's runs in a combined shutout effort from left-hander Brian Holmes and right-handers Zach Morton and Juan Minaya for a 5-0 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 4,171 at Modern Woodmen Park Sunday night.

On a day of highlights, the River Bandits (30-18 second half, 68-49 overall) turned their second triple play of the season. With a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning, Morton allowed back-to-back singles by catcher Parker Berberet and third baseman Alfredo Rodriguez. With both runners taking off on a pitch, center fielder Lance Roenicke hit a fly ball down the right-field line. River Bandits right fielder Jordan Scott made the catch before reaching the foul line, and he threw to first baseman Bobby Borchering to double off Rodriguez. Borchering then tossed to shortstop Austin Elkins at second base for the 9-3-6 triple play. Elkins was also part of a ground-ball, 5-4-3 triple play on April 28 at home against Great Lakes.

Quad Cities' last two triple plays before this season came in 2007, when second baseman Jaime Landin and first baseman Brandon Buckman were each part of triple plays May 31 against Clinton and June 16 against Beloit.

Holmes (4-3) was stellar in going six innings for a second straight start to earn his first win since May 3. He allowed three singles and a walk while striking out seven batters. He had three 1-2-3 innings and set down the final seven batters he faced. Morton worked around two hits and a walk in the seventh and eighth innings, and Minaya pitched around a single in a scoreless ninth inning. The Timber Rattlers (21-28, 50-64) were held to six hits and no runs after a seven-run, 12-hit, three-homer showing Saturday night.

Wisconsin starter Jorge Lopez (6-8) retired the first seven River Bandits hitters, including four on strikeouts, before Scott had a one-out bunt single in the third inning. Scott was later thrown out trying to steal third, but Elkins and second baseman Tony Kemp hit consecutive singles with two outs. Hernandez then drove an 0-1 offering to the Modern Woodmen Berm for a 3-0 lead. The four-hit, three-run inning was the only offense against Lopez, who retired seven straight hitters following the home run and finished with six strikeouts.

In the eighth inning, Kemp reached against right-hander Jono Armold on a fielding error by second baseman Chris McFarland. Hernandez then hit a 3-2 pitch just over the left-field fence to the berm, capping his 3-for-4, five-RBI game. His two home runs and five RBIs matched career highs set July 20, 2011, when he played in the Dominican Summer League against a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate.

Sunday's victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Monday, Aug. 12. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Monday, Aug. 12. The River Bandits will play the rubber match of the series Monday at 7 p.m. against Wisconsin. Quad Cities right-hander and 2013 No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel (1-0) will face right-hander Austin Ross (0-0).

Wisconsin hits three home runs and one-hits Quad Cities for series-opening win

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 10, 2013) - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three first-inning runs and hit three home runs - including two by left fielder Victor Roache - while their pitchers combined to one-hit the Quad Cities River Bandits in a 7-0 final in front of 5,544 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

The River Bandits (29-18 second half, 67-49 overall) had just one hit for the second time in a game this season, matching their season low from a 4-1 loss May 20 against Beloit. The Timber Rattlers (21-27 second half, 50-63 overall) allowed their fewest hits to an opponent this season, while not allowing the home team to advance a runner to second base until two outs in the ninth inning. The 7-0 loss was the largest shutout defeat for Quad Cities since dropping an 11-0 final at home to Beloit Aug. 21, 2012.

Timber Rattlers right-handers Tyler Wagner (9-8) and Harvey Martin combined for the shutout, with the former allowing a fourth-inning single by River Bandits left fielder Danry Vasquez. Wagner went five innings, giving up two walks and striking out five. Martin earned his second save by working around two hit batters and striking out one in the final four innings.

Wisconsin had a fast start against left-hander Joe Bircher (3-2). Center fielder Tyrone Taylor doubled to left field leading off the game and scored on a one-out RBI single by third baseman Mike Garza. Roache then hit the first of his two home runs to right-center field for a 3-0 lead. Bircher retired the next six hitters before allowing right fielder Michael Reed's third-inning double to left field that preceded another RBI single from Garza.

With a 4-0 lead, Wisconsin added a run in the fourth inning, as first baseman Parker Berberet hit a leadoff tiple and scored on a single by catcher Tyler Roberts. Garza led off the fifth inning with his fourth home run of the season for a 6-0 lead. Bircher gave up the first six runs - all earned - on nine hits while striking out four batters in the first five innings.

Roache tallied the final Wisconsin run by taking right-hander Daniel Minor's first pitch of the seventh inning out to left field. It was Roache's fifth home run in 10 games against the River Bandits and his 20th overall this season. Minor finished two innings from the Quad Cities bullpen, and right-hander Patrick Christensen worked around two hits to strike out four batters across the eighth and ninth innings.

The loss dropped Quad Cities 1 ½ games behind Cedar Rapids (31-17, 71-45) in the second-half standings. Peoria (25-23, 63-52) closed within 4 ½ games of the River Bandits for second place in the second half. The River Bandits have 22 games, including 12 at home, to finish the season.

The River Bandits will continue their series with Wisconsin at 5 p.m. Sunday. River Bandits left-hander Brian Holmes (3-3) will face Timber Rattlers right-hander Jorge Lopez (6-7).
