Community mental health professional offers insight into healthy aging

DAVENPORT, IA (April 29, 2015) - Senior Star at Elmore Place invites Quad City seniors and their families to the presentation, Healthy Minds for Seniors, at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 11 at 4502 Elmore Avenue, Davenport.

Led by guest speaker Alex Hogg, a licensed independent social worker with Family Resources, the informal presentation will address the signs of depression, anxiety, grief and compassion fatigue and how to recognize their differences.  In addition, Hogg will discuss therapy as a treatment option.

According to the National Institute on Aging's website, an estimated two million Americans age 65 or older suffer from major depression, and another five million suffer from less severe forms of the illness ... yet, depression is a widely under recognized and under treated medical illness.  Depression can, and should, be treated when it occurs with other illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and Parkinson's disease, since untreated depression may delay recovery from or worsen the outcome of these other illnesses.

"Senior Star continues to present discussions with industry professionals to offer Quad Cities friends and neighbors access to information that they otherwise might not discover from their own research online," said Marc Strohschein, executive director of Senior Star at Elmore Place.  "We encourage all senior adults and their family members to join us for this vital discussion."

Light refreshments will be served.  An RSVP is requested no later than May 8 by calling 563.484.5114.

For more information about Senior Star at Elmore Place or to schedule a tour, call 563.484.5114 or visit the website at www.seniorstar.com.

###

during a shortened academic year, these evenings are focused on the topic of presentation, and are intellectually stimulating, free, and open to the public.
Independent Scholars give a presentation-discussion to an audience of interested co-learners during these Evenings which are dedicated to the scholars. Audiences actively participate bringing their ideas and critique to the scholars' work.

To the audience: As co-learners, your presence is vital. Your presence supports the work of the Independent Scholars as their original work is being finalized for publication or further ongoing presentation.

Dedicated to the promotion of the ongoing work of Independent Scholars, these Evenings are not commercial evenings, although many Independent Scholars have privately benefited commercially from their presentations at these Independent Scholars' Evenings.
Additionally, often  in today's economy, citizens cannot, or do not wish to,  get monetary employment  in their area of interest and training; or their interests have changed and continue to change as they grow, as is often the case. These ISE or Independent Scholars Evenings are the venue or vehicle for this parallel work in today's modern era.
Keeping these considerations in mind, The Institute promotes the work of Independent Scholars. The Institue does this by providing a free -standing structured organisation to Independent Scholars who give their presentations at these dedicated weekly Independent Scholars' Evenings.
Not governed by any State Educational Board requirements, or potential existing bias of departmental heads or peers, yet within the perimeters of Federal and State laws, these free-standing Independent Scholars' Evenings sessions are dedicated to those who wish to use these evenings for their ongoing personal life's work.  Please visit our website: www.qcinstitute.org to review archives.

These evenings are characterized by a vigorous, stimulating and uplifting intellectual atmosphere. All the presentations and opinions are authentic and original.
Independent Scholars' Evenings are sponsored by The Institute for Cultural & Healing Traditons, a 501(c)3 organization according to the United States law at State and Federal levels since 1996.

The Institute is free-standing. Although we have a Board of Directors, we do not control the content of presentations. Social perimeters and market forces decide and are factored into governing the success of Independent Scholars personal work.
The Independent Scholars' Evenings are purely a Community  organization for intellectual inquiry, expression  and the Freedom of Speech.

Please review our archives on our website www.qcinstitute.org. All Independent Scholars' presentations at listed there.

There is no organization like this in our area and region.: your presence as co-learners and as Independent Scholars is celebrated,
Today we live the combinatorial of both: cyber and physical space. What we, at The Institute call The Fifth Dimension.
Therefore:
Physically: The Institute CHT is housed in the historic Moline Commercial Club (c) 1912 built by Charles Deere and his successor, Ben Butterowrth. www.themolinecommercialclub.com
And
Cyberspace: at this point we have a Skype presence. But will improve our cyberspace presence as our technology assistance improves.

An Institute copy of books written by Independent Scholars are kept at The Institute's library for you to read, on premises, at your convenience.  Certified Independent Scholars are welcome to use the Institute's Rooms as a thinking room or a writing room for their convenience.  Please feel free to use the Institute library for private reading and relaxing time.

Copies of completed presentations are kept at the library's central table for you to take.
For security purposes the doors are kept locked unless there is an event in the building. Just call us at 312-498-7207to let us know when you will be coming in to use The Institute or call and we will get the doors opened for you.

A contribution is most welcome to cover the costs of printing, advertising and administration expenses. All donations are fully tax deductible.
You can donate by:
* Credit Cards: please call us and a staff member will assist you.
* Drop your donation in the drop box in the Library. Nobody opens the drop-box except administration. Your donation is safe.

Rock Island, IL: Learn about the role of Davenport's Credit Island in local and national history, and its recent rejuvenation, with a free history presentation at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 14 at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street,. Rock Island.

Davenport Parks and Recreation Director Scott Hock will discuss the history of one of Davenport's oldest and most iconic public spaces, including its recognition as an official War of 1812 battleground site and the rebuilding of the historic 1923 Credit Island Lodge.

In the past year, the City of Davenport dedicated both the new lodge and a monument to recognize the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Credit Island. One of very few battles on the Upper Mississippi, the Credit Island conflict marked one of the last (and unsuccessful) efforts by the Americans to wrest control of the Upper Mississippi from the British. It's also significant for the heavy involvement of the 800 to 1,200 Native Americans, including Black Hawk, who fought alongside a handful of British soldiers. The British side far out-numbered the 334 Americans led by future president Zachary Taylor.

Hock will discuss more about the battle's significance and its affect on British/Native American relations, as well as talking about the more recent history of the Credit Island Lodge. The Lodge was built in 1923 and almost completely destroyed by flood and fire in May 2013. Hock will talk about the rebuilding and rejuvenation project, which was funded with about $1.5 million in insurance money. Hock will be joined by Nate Brown, president of the Friends of Credit Island, who will also discuss the role of his group in supporting improvements to the park.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information about Rock Island Library services and programs, visit the library's online branch at www.rockislandlibrary.org, call 309-732-READ or follow the library on Facebook or Twitter.
