It is time again for the River Valley Optimist Club to offer their FREE basketball clinic to children grades 3-6 in the LeClaire/Bettendorf area. The clinic will be held Saturdays beginning January 31, 2015 and ending on March 7, 2015. The sessions are one hour in length and will teach basketball fundamentals while having FUN! The Pleasant Valley Trap Team is currently seeking sponsorships for our 2015 season.  We have several levels of sponsorships with various levels of recognition. Money raised will help offset the cost of participation to our students by helping purchase equipment and cover entry fees. We will not turn away any student for financial reasons. With the success of our first season with 45 students, we expect the number of participants, both male and female, to continue to grow. We are fortunate to have 13 certified volunteer coaches, support of the Pleasant Valley School District and a large support organization to manage the team. Our trap team is open to students of all abilities, male or female, in grades 7th - 12th grade. The season runs from March through June. First Presbyterian Church, LeClaire We have a Wednesday evening program: Halftime! for kids, 5-11 years old. It's half way through the week - and it's a time of fun for the kids. We meet from 5:30-7pm, every Wednesday there is school, through May 6. We serve dinner, play games, have a lesson and a craft. Have your child join us for a week or two to see what we are doing. Coal Valley, IL - January 30, 2015 - Niabi Zoo announced today that it will be holding an all-new event on Friday, February 13. The event is titled Romance at the Zoo and will feature dinner, drinks, and an entertaining look at romance in the animal kingdom, as presented by Niabi Zoo's Curator of Conservation & Education, Jill Roderick. This Valentine's Day-related event is open to adults ages 21 and over and reservations are required.

Romance at the Zoo will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the "wilder" side of the animal kingdom, such as how porcupines actually succeed in mating despite being covered in needle-sharp quills or the incredibly high number of times that lions get together during breeding season. "We are excited to provide adults with a new and fun way to experience Niabi Zoo," said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman, "while also teaching them about the amazing life of animals from around the world." Heinzman also added that Romance at the Zoo is sure to be the most unique Valentine's Day date in the Quad Cities.

Tickets for the event are $40 per person or $75 per couple. A full dinner and one free drink are included with the ticket price. Additional drinks will be available from a cash bar. Attacking Trafficking, the local faith based group dedicated to ending Human Trafficking, is pleased to announce that it will hold a Prayer Service dedicated to ending Human Trafficking, all are invited to attend. The service will be held on February 8, 2015 from 1 to 2 PM, in Denning Hall at St. Paul the Apostle, Catholic Church. St. Paul's is located at 916 East Rusholme Street, Davenport, IA. February 8th is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, the Catholic patron saint of SLAVES and TRAFFICKED PERSONS. There is no cost for those attending the prayer service.

Attendees will learn about on-going Human Trafficking, both locally and globally. Luke Ebener, a St. Paul member who spent time working in the Sudan, will share his experiences and devotion to St. Josephine. Additional speakers from other denominations will also share their faiths teaching against Human Trafficking.

Attacking Trafficking is a group of local faith based organizations, united in their fight against all forms of Human Trafficking. All attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to join the fight to end this crime.

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Library's Pop Open a Good Book winter reading contests for children, teens and adults continue through Saturday, Feb.28, and while you're reading, you can also pop-in for some free fun.

The Children's Department will offer free after school crafts at three locations next week. Children ages eight and up can make a pop-up dog card at 4:00 pm on Feb. 3 at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street, on Feb. 4 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street, and on Feb. 5 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Materials will be provided. The craft is free.

Other children's events next week include morning Toddler Tale storytimes at the 30/31, Southwest and Main Library branches, a "Read with Rover" program at the 30/31 Branch, and a Pajama Storytime, also at the 30/31 Branch. For details, please visit www.rockislandlibrary.org.

Upcoming programs for teens next week include a "Tape to Make It" program at 6:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the 30/31 Branch. Teens ages 12 to 18 will make crafts using colorful duct tape. Materials will be supplied.

The library will also show a free independent movie for adults at 5:30 pm on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Main Library. The monthly movie starts earlier than usual due to the film's running time. The unrated movie, which is set in Japan with English subtitles, includes popcorn and a discussion.

The American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop in Cumberland Square invites you to bargain shop for a cause!  Sunday, February 1st

will be our annual super clearance sale EVERYTHING in the store will be half price.

 

Mark your calendars and stop in to grab all of the bargains that you can find and be back home long before the big game starts.  We are clearing out the floor to make room for all of the new and beautiful donations that we have recently been receiving.  With the new things that we will be putting out on the floor starting Monday, February 2nd the bargains will continue long after the game is over.

 

The Discovery Shop is an upscale resale shop selling gently used items donated by the community and staffed by over 100 volunteers.  All clothing is cleaned and ironed before it is sold and dry cleaning is donated by Burke's Dry Cleaners.  Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society for cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.

Donations are accepted anytime the shop is open and a tax receipt is always available.  Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 5 pm., Thursday from 10 am to 7 pm., and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Rock Island, IL: Starting in February, kids can read with a dog again at the Rock Island Library.

The twice-monthly Read with Rover events allow children from PreK to 6th grades to practice reading aloud to a therapy dog at the Rock Island 30/31 and Southwest Branches. The library first introduced the popular read with a dog events this summer.

Read with Rover events will be offered from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Monday, Feb. 2 and Monday, March 16 at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street, and Monday, Feb. 23 and Monday March 30 at the Southwest Branch. Sessions are scheduled through May. For more dates, visit www.rockislandlibrary.org.

Each drop-in session pairs a young reader with a certified therapy dog and handler from the Quad Cities Canine Assistance Network (QC CAN). No registration is necessary.

"Reading aloud has great benefits for kids of all ages, from developing vocabulary to attention, and the dog provides a patient and loving audience,"  says Ranell Dennis, a children's librarian from the Rock Island Public Library.

Families who stay for the 6:30 pm Pajama Storytimes offered immediately after Read with Rover can experience a story, song and craft on different story themes and learning concepts, including "backwards" stories on Feb. 2 and friendship stories on Feb. 23. The free Pajama Storytimes are designed for ages birth to five.
