2009 BUDDY WALK location has been MOVED.

This year's National Down Syndrome Society's BUDDY WALK has been relocated to the east end of the Ben Butterworth Parkway in Moline, along the riverfront at the boat launch.  The BUDDY WALK is still scheduled for October 10th and will begin at 10:30 a.m.  There will be a shuttle available from the former CASE IH Parking Lot.  For more information, plese contact the Upside of Down Syndrome Family Group at 563-271-3524.

Pumpkin Festival at Fejervary Park: October 24, 2009

Davenport, IA, October 8, 2009:  Celebrate the beautiful leaves and harvest season with a day filled with old fashion fun.  The City of Davenport Parks & Recreation Department will be host to you and your family on this day filled with physical activity structures, petting zoo, Sancho-the Prize Winning Steer (participants are able to purchase a photo with Sancho), games, pumpkin decorating, crafts, and so much more.  Pumpkins will be available to decorate and concessions will be available for purchase.  There will be something for everyone.

  • Note: In effort to combat childhood obesity, the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department has placed an emphasis on offering only healthy and educational prizes for participants.

Bettendorf Family YMCA Hosts Family-Friendly Fall Celebration

October 8, 2009 - Bettendorf, IA - Quad City area families are invited to experience the tastes and sounds of the German tradition known as Oktoberfest, at the Bettendorf Family YMCA on Friday, October 16.

This family-friendly event is for children of all ages and will celebrate our community's German heritage through live music, food and crafts.  Participants will be able to enjoy a hot bratwurst and sauerkraut along with a fresh draw from the root beer keg.   After their tummies are full they can sit back and enjoy the live music or learn how to Polka.  For those who want to sing along, the YMCA will host a yodeling contest and the kids can learn how to make their own lederhosen.

The Bettendorf Family YMCA's Oktoberfest runs from 5:30-8pm, on Friday, October 16.  Admission to the event is $5 per person or $15 per family.  The YMCA is located at 3800 Tanglefoot Lane, Bettendorf.  For more information call 563-359-9622.

11th annual evening of Chocolate, Champagne and Candlelight is Nov. 7

Decadent event celebrating all things chocolate to benefit Galena-Jo Daviess Historical Society

GALENA, Ill. - Two lavish chocolate buffets paired with a glass of bubbly and topped with live music will have some folks asking themselves "is this heaven?" No, it's the Spirits of the Galena History Museum's annual "Chocolate, Champagne and Candlelight" event on Saturday, November 7, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the DeSoto House Hotel, 230 S. Main St., in historic downtown Galena. The doors will open at 6, the buffet will start at 6:30, and arriving before 7:30 is recommended.

All-you-can-eat is the order of the evening with a seemingly infinite selection of sweets in an elegant Victorian setting. A number of non-chocolate desserts will also be on hand for those wishing to cleanse their palate. One free beverage ticket is included in the ticket price; a cash bar is also available.

Featured baker this year is Patricia Lehnhardt, published author of cookbooks and food/garden articles, who will present "Chocolate Around the World." Featured vendor is Gustafson & Grey, Ltd. of Galena who will be showcasing champagne diamonds. A portion of the sales will be donated to the historical society. A silent auction of unique Galena items donated by generous local businesspeople will round out the evening.

Admission is $14 per person and includes a glass of champagne. Advance ticket purchase is recommended, as seating is limited and the event often sells out. A number of area lodging properties offer chocolate packages; check with your favorite hotel or B&B for an enticing array of options. Tickets are available in advance at both the DeSoto House Hotel and the Galena History Museum at 211 S. Bench St. They also may be purchased with a credit card by calling the museum at 815-777-9129, and, if available, they will be sold at the door.

MEL FOSTER PARTICIPATES IN STUDENT FOOD DRIVE CORPORATE CHALLENGE

Bettendorf, IA - Mel Foster Co. is partnering with Mulligan's Valley Pub in Coal Valley to collect canned food items for the 2009 Student Food Drive.  Mel Foster Co. is participating in the Student Hunger Drive Corporate Challenge and is looking to surpass last year's second place.

To help efforts, Mel Foster Commercial Real Estate agent, Pieter Hansen, who also owns Mulligan's Valley Pub, graciously partnered with Mel Foster Co. to help support the Student Food Drive, which greatly impacts our community.  Mulligan's Valley Pub is known for Taco Tuesdays and their support of great causes in our communities and for our residents in need.

The community is invited to Mulligan's Valley Pub at 310 West 1st Avenue, Coal Valley, Illinois for Taco Tuesday on October 13 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Patrons can enjoy a taco dinner for every donation of eight (8) canned food items or more per person.  Cash donations are also accepted.

Mulligan's provides Tacos for Charity every Tuesday but this is the first time they are accepting canned foods as donations.  "I think this is a perfect way support the Student Food Drive as well as providing tacos as a reward for your generosity.  This event has the potential to raise thousands of pounds of food for our local food bank," mentioned Pieter Hansen.

Local Quad Cities solider will be returning home today

FC John Patrick Kelly from Bravo Troop Second Squadron of the 106th Calvary will be returning to his local hometown of Aledo, IL at 6:30 p.m. today (September 28) with a heroes welcome.

Based out of Dixon, IL, PFC JP Kelly has had a long trip home.  Part of his squadron has returned home already, and some, I believe, are still awaiting a plane home.  PFC JP Kelly will be arriving at the Dixon Armory in Dixon, IL from Ft. McCoy, WI this morning and will attend a short ceremony before being released to his family around 4:30 p.m.  He will then be escorted by the Patriot Guard from the Dixon Armory where he will meet up with a pre-scheduled caravan of family and friends in Milan, IL, along Route 67 acrossed from Coyne Center and the old Silver Oaks restaurant (there is currently a trailer park there now and a BP gas station kitty-corner from the meeting place).  The Patriot Guard will then lead PFC Kelly and his caravan of family and friends down Route 67, through Viola, IL (around 6:20 p.m.) and into Aledo, IL around 6:30 p.m. and end at the Aledo Central Park Pavilion, where JP will be reunited with is remaining family and friends.

PFC Kelly is the only Quad Cities native, I believe, that will be retuning to this area today. Please come and help us welcome him home properly from a tour of serving his country.

Tommy Sands appears at Deere Wiman House

A unique performance in Moline presents music as a way to bridge cultural differences. In an Oct. 9 performance at the Deere-Wiman House, Irish singer and peace activist Tommy Sands will share his dreams of an Ireland without conflict.

One of Ireland's most powerful songwriters and an enchanting performer, Sands uses vocals and guitar to highlight our common heritage, transcending cultural differences to bring about world peace. His repertoire ranges from traditional Irish music to contemporary folk, telling the story of a country with a troubled past but indomitable spirit.

As an acclaimed musician and social activist, Sands has performed in venues all over the world, including a recent appearance at Pete Seeger's 90th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. His original compositions include There Were Roses and Daughters and Sons, recorded by Joan Baez, Kathy Mattea, Sean Keane and The Dubliners.

This event is part of the Fridays at Deere-Wiman House series funded by the William Butterworth Memorial Trust, and part of the Quad City Arts Visiting Artist Series. BEST BREW WINNERS NAMED AT BREW HA HA

MOLINE, ILLNIOIS - The sun was shining. Minus Six was performing. The Iowa game was on the big screen television, and 1,800 people tasted a variety of beers and cheeses at the 10th Annual WQPT Brew Ha Ha on Saturday, September 19th.

At the end of the day, once the ballots had been tallied, Bend River Brewing Company and Blue Cat Brew Pub took home the trophies for Best Brews at Brew Ha Ha 2009..

First Place went to Bent River Brewing Co. for their brew, Uncommon Stout. They also won Second Place with Dry Hopped Ale and their trophies were picked up by Steve Ratcliff. Third Place went to Tucks Tenacious Trippel from Blue Cat Brew Pub with Melissa Wileke picking up the award.
