Co-hosted by the Midwest Writing Center and taking place at Rock Island venue Rozz-Tox on August 3, a popular literary event returns with a musical theme in the SPECTRA Reading Series' Books & Beats edition, a celebration of Chicago house music as well as the release of Chicago House Music: Culture & Community (forthcoming from Belt Publishing on August 13) by award-winning writer Marguerite L. Harrold.

From now through September 28, patrons of Dubuque's Voices Studio can witness a spectacular confluence of talent and vision as renowned artists Leslie Bell and Lee White join forces for an extraordinary exhibition Under the Same Sun, the display showcasing a diverse array of artworks that reflect the profound journeys and creative mastery of both artists.

An evocative and inspiring exhibit by esteemed artist Andrew Raeside, A Life Lived in Bright Light, on display at Dubuque's Voices Studio through September 28, will showcase a series of abstract paintings that celebrate the shared emotional experiences and connections between individuals, as well as reflect Raeside's lifelong journey of capturing the vibrancy and intensity of human emotions through art.

Held in conjunction with the venue's current Illumination: Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts from the Figge Collection, an August 8 Archivist Talk at Davenport's Figge Art Museum will feature an exploration of the exhibition by the University of Iowa Special Collections and Archives' J. Eric Ensley, the curator of rare books and maps who will offer fascinating insight into the collection and care of illuminated manuscripts.

Featuring 200 layers, including clips of mugs breaking, splashing paint, unfurling tablecloths, and his dog and cat strolling through the frame, video artist Dave Greber's Stilllives II: Vignette is on display at Davenport's Figge Art Museum through January 12, this work inspired by the act of setting a dinner table projected on the floor as though you are looking down at a table that's being continuously reset.

Presented at Coal Valley's Robert R. Jones Public Library on August 6, a screening of An Infantryman from Hero Street will find local Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films sharing their moving, 30-minute documentary with area audiences, this fourth work in the Hero Street series followed by a question-and-answer session with the area talents.

From August 2 through 11, audiences at Moline's Prospect Park Auditorium are invited to cheer a rousing “L'chaim!” when the talents at Quad City Music Guild present Fiddler on the Roof, a new staging of the beloved theatrical masterpiece from Tony winner Joseph Stein and Pulitzer Prize winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick.

With the Hollywood Reporter raving that "there’s no shortage of funny lines and inspired moments of physical comedy," Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Lindsay-Abaire's winning frenemy comedy Ripcord enjoys its area debut at Moline's Spotlight Theatre from August 2 through 11, the play hailed by Time Out New York as "great fun," "genuinely moving," and "a compelling look at the pleasure of a challenge and the challenge of finding pleasure."

An intimidating ogre, a feisty princess, a wisecracking donkey, a diminutive tyrant, an ambulatory gingerbread man, and other fantastical figures take over Maquoketa's Ohnward Fine Arts Center when gifted youths present August 3 and 4 performances of Shrek the Musical Jr., a one-act version of the Tony-winning fairytale slapstick based on the Oscar-winning animated smash, the show hailed by USA Today as “a triumph of comic imagination with a heart as big and warm as Santa's.”

Scottish bagpipe marches and rollicking Irish pub tunes will fill Rock Island’s Riverfront Grille on July 20 as part of the fourth-annual Celtic Night Out, a celebration of heritage sponsored by the Scottish American Society of the Quad Cities, and boasting performances by the Black Hawk Pipes & Drums and the musicians of east/central Iowa's Blame Not the Bard.
