Politics versus Policy in the New "Public Charge" Rules

On August 12, the Trump administration announced new rules for immigrants seeking permanent-residence status (through issuance of a "green card")  in the United States. Those rules apply a longstanding prohibition on immigrants likely to become "public charges" (that is, dependent on government benefits) to applicants who have received certain of those government benefits — among them Medicaid, SNAP ("food stamps"), and housing assistance — for more than 12 months.

Pat Devine of Council Bluffs Claims Sweepstakes Award for the Eleventh Year

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 14, 2019) — For the eleventh year in a row, Pat Devine of Council Bluffs secured Sweepstakes honors in the Toys and Dolls division of Fabric and Threads judged prior to the start of the 2019 Iowa State Fair. Devine also accrued the Best of Show award.

Beloit Takes First Game of Series 6-2

DAVENPORT, IOWA (August 14, 2019) — The pitching staff of the Beloit Snappers recorded 15 strikeouts and limited the Quad Cities River Bandits to three hits in taking the opening game of a series at Modern Woodmen Park 6-2 on Wednesday night. Beloit improved to 9-7 against the River Bandits this season and guaranteed at worst a split of the season-series.

EPA Announces $3.15 Million in Water-Quality Funding in Iowa
