As the calendar prepared to flip from 2019 to 2020, protesters stormed the US embassy in Baghdad. As I write this, the action — a response to US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria which killed at least 25 and wounded more than 50 — hasn't yet become a reprise of the Iran hostage crisis of 40 years ago, but it's eerily reminiscent. Although few Americans seem to notice, Iraq is arguably the second-longest war in US history.

DES MOINES, IOWA (December 30, 2019) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announces 350,000 Iowans have registered to vote in the past five years. Iowa has broken several voter-registration records since Sec Pate took office on January 1, 2015, including setting the all-time high for active registered voters, 2,045,864, in January 2017.

DES MOINES, IOWA (December 27, 2019) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate referred nine voters to county attorneys for allegedly voting twice in the 2018 general election. They are suspected of voting in Iowa after casting a ballot for the 2018 general election in another state. There were an additional 27 suspected instances of voters casting ballots in Iowa first, then in another state during the same election.
