Iowans Create Record Number of New Businesses

DES MOINES, IOWA (July 20, 2022) — Secretary of State Paul Pate announces Iowans registered the highest number of new business entities in state history during the 2022 fiscal year. 33,331 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s Office between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022. The mark breaks the previous record of 33,260 set last year.

Survey Finds Labor Shortages and Increased Costs Putting a Strain on Iowa Restaurant Operators

DES MOINES, IOWA (July 19, 2022) — Finding qualified workforce continues to stifle recovery for many Iowa restaurants and bars, according to survey data from the Iowa Restaurant Association. More than half of respondents (52%) ranked finding qualified workforce as their greatest challenge — with more than one-third operating 30% below their needed staffing levels. The increased cost of labor and the increased cost of goods were a close second on the list of challenges.

Iowa Business Council (IBC) Projects Positive Six-Month Economic Outlook

DES MOINES, IOWA (June 28, 2022) — The Iowa Business Council (IBC) has released its second-quarter Economic Outlook Survey for 2022. The report measures member expectations for sales, capital spending, and employment for the next six months. If the index measures above fifty, sentiment is positive. The second-quarter survey's overall economic outlook index is 63.88. The results project confidence for the eighth quarter in a row.

Iowa Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald Awards Muscatine County Family a $529 College Savings Iowa Contribution

DES MOINES, IOWA (June 20, 2022) — State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald celebrated 529 Day with a $529 College Savings Iowa contribution to one family in each Iowa county. The Koppes family was randomly chosen as the Muscatine County winner. "I'm elated to be giving a boost to Kaylee's education savings," said Fitzgerald. "All it takes is one contribution to get the ball rolling. Whether it is $25 or $529, every dollar saved is one that won't have to be borrowed later."

Iowa’s Unemployment Rate Drops to 2.7 Percent in May; Labor Force Participation Grows

DES MOINES, IOWA (June 16, 2022) — Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped for the fifth consecutive month to 2.7 percent in May — down from 3.0 percent in April and from 4.5 percent one year ago. Job growth was mirrored in the Labor Force Participation Rate, which grew to 67.6 percent in May, up from 67.4 percent last month and 67.1 percent a year ago. The US May unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent.
