Grassley: U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Selects Sioux Rapids Student

WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Katie Marie Gibson of Sioux Rapids has received an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, N.Y., for the 2014-2015 school year.

Gibson is the daughter of Carolyn and Thomas Gibson.  She will graduate in May from Sioux Central High School.  Gibson participated in volleyball, basketball, cross country, softball, individual speech club, 4-H, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and the Harlan Institute Program, a law-based debate club.

"Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor," Grassley said.  "Students work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity.  I wish Katie well and thank her for her commitment to serve our nation."

Gibson was among the 55 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies.  Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley's website.

For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.

Iowa Schools Partner with Governor's STEM Advisory Council to Engage in International Test of Science, Mathematics and Reading

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - (Feb. 25, 2014) - Six high-achieving Iowa high schools are participating this spring in an international test of science, mathematics and reading, providing each of them and Iowa with a global benchmark for where our learners stand compared to their peers in over 65 countries and economies worldwide. Iowa's participation in the project, along with Minnesota, Illinois and Tennessee, is being funded by the Kern Family Foundation through a grant to the education organization Innovate + Educate. The voluntary PISA-based (Program for International Student Achievement) test engages 15-year-old students in critical thinking and contextual problem solving, attributes that college and business leaders say are critical. The test is produced by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and is similar to the PISA test taken by over 500,000 15-year-olds around the globe every three years.
Iowa's schools were chosen based on aggregate ACT test scores (some of the highest in the state), size and geography. Each school will administer the test during spring semester 2014, and scores will be publicly reported. Each school commits to hosting conversations that engage business and community partners in gauging and improving performance in an international context. Three global business partners have signed on to help the schools leverage the results: Rockwell Collins, John Deere and DuPont Pioneer.
"This is a great opportunity for Iowa to see where we stand and look at how we can better prepare students for a knowledge-based, global economy," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, co-chair of the Governor's STEM Advisory Council. "The schools' participation demonstrates Iowans' commitment to giving our children a world-class education."
The six high schools taking the OECD test are Adel-DeSoto-Minburn (ADM), Ames, Decorah, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Pella, and Cedar Rapids Washington.
"Iowa's business sector competes worldwide not only for customers but for talent, so these results will be a welcome window into how we stack up," said Vermeer CEO Mary Andringa who co-chairs the Governor's STEM Advisory Council."More important than any specific outcomes, the community conversations this test will drive hold great promise for advancing education in Iowa."

Loebsack Applauds Announcement of Investment to Bring Advanced Manufacturing Institute to Iowa's Three Universities

$70 million investment will leverage additional $250 million in private funds to focus on digital manufacturing

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today praised the announcement by President Obama that will establish a public-private partnership to boost advanced manufacturing through the Department of Defense. All three of Iowa's public universities, University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa, will be involved in the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation (DMDI) Institute, which will be headed by UI Labs based in Chicago. Last year, Loebsack led the charge among the members of Iowa's House delegation to ensure Iowa's premiere universities would be included in this consortium of 73 companies, universities, nonprofits, and research labs. Iowa based companies involved with the DMDI Institute include Deere & Company, Rockwell Collins, General Dynamics - Ordnance & Tactical Systems, General Electric, Honeywell and Siemens.

"Today's announcement will lead to the creation of good, high-paying jobs across the country in the manufacturing field," said Loebsack. "We must continue to focus on growing the economy and putting Iowans back to work. Investing in our universities and other businesses, which in turn leverages public-private partnerships, helps strengthen the economy and promote job creation."

Specifically, the DMDI Institute will create a novel partnership between world-leading manufacturing experts and cutting-edge software companies to enable interoperability across the supply chain, develop enhanced digital capabilities to design and test new products, and reduce costs in manufacturing processes across multiple industries.

Undergraduate students in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine may qualify for the Dean's List with fewer than 12 semester hours of graded credit if deemed appropriate by the college.

College of Nursing students participating in clinical courses must have a total of 12 semester hours of earned credit, with eight semester hours of graded credit with a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Planning College Campus Visits?

3 Important Criteria to Look for in Evaluating Dining

Across the country, high school students are busy planning college visits in order to winnow their wish lists before senior year applications.

"It's important to visit while classes are in session, and to pay attention to what's going on in the classroom outside of the classroom," advises David Porter, social architect, consultant to colleges and universities throughout North America and author of "The Porter Principles," a guide to college success through social engineering, (www.porterkhouwconsulting.com).

"What are the wholesome opportunities for socially rich student engagement and study on-campus?  What extra-curriculars are offered and how accessible are they? What does the college paper reveal about campus issues, concerns and opportunities?"

One often overlooked feature is the structure of campus dining, Porter says.

"Many universities require freshmen to live on campus for the first year because administrators know that students who live and dine on campus have higher GPAs and higher graduation rates than those who don't.  A properly socially engineered dining-learning commons is central to the day-to-day lives of all students living on-campus and is crucial for face-to-face social networking and study with fellow students," he says.

"But these same universities often fail to realize that student dining is as much - even more -- a factor in developing a sense of community and predicting future success.  This is the centerpiece of 'the classroom outside of the classroom'."

He offers these suggestions for evaluating campus dining commons:

• Is there a centralized dining hall or commons, or are food locations scattered? A dining-learning commons is the living room of the campus, a place where students come together and pause long enough to meet, talk, make friends, see and be seen, relax, study and collaborate. "These are all vital not only to bonding but to learning how to socialize with fellow students from a wide variety of backgrounds in a neutral environment," Porter says. "That provides once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to develop and nurture valuable networking skills for their personal and future professional lives. If the meal plan encourages them to scatter across campus - or go off campus - to pick up fast foods eaten in isolation, vital opportunities are lost."

• What are the hours of operation? Students live on a different clock than most of us.   For many students, 11 p.m. is the middle of the day. Is the dining-learning commons open, thus respecting and being conducive to their (not our) lifestyle? If so, does it offer more than microwave pizza and hot dogs? This will offer a social and safe on-campus environment, Porter says. "If the place isn't open when they're hungry, they'll go elsewhere."

• How far is the dining hall from dorms and the academic core of campus? "I once consulted with a university that was mystified about why two dining halls got lots of student traffic, while the third - the most beautiful -- was largely ignored," Porter says. "When I visited, I discovered the dining hall had been built on top of a rather steep hill on the far edge of campus. The location offered great views, but the climb was a bear!" Dining halls should be within easy reach of both dorms and classroom buildings in the academic core or students simply won't use them.

NOTRE DAME, IN (02/21/2014)(readMedia)-- Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN, named the following students to the Dean's List for the Fall 2013 semester:

Katherine Kautz, daughter of Gregory and Ann Kautz of Bettendorf, IA

Caitlin Poster, daughter of Michael and Kelly Poster of Davenport, IA

To earn academic honors at Saint Mary's, a student must achieve a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, have at least 12 graded credit hours, no incompletes, and no grades lower than a C.

ASU announces Fall 2013 Dean's List

TEMPE, AZ (02/19/2014)(readMedia)-- Undergraduate students who earn 12 or more graded semester hours during a semester in residence at ASU with a GPA of 3.50 or higher are eligible for the Dean's List. A notation regarding Dean's List achievement appears on the unofficial transcript.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY WISCONSIN GRADUATES

(FEBRUARY 20, 2014) - Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, held Fall Commencement Exercises December 14, 2013.

Among the area students receiving degrees were:

Concordia's main campus is located on 200 acres of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. The University and its 10 educational centers and classrooms are home to 7,618 undergraduate and graduate students from 46 states and 28 foreign countries. The University offers more than 60 undergraduate majors, 14 master's degree programs, and doctoral degrees in Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Nursing Practice.
