EpiPen: A Case Study in the Value of Oversight to Find Legislative Solutions

 

Mr. President,

I’d like to call attention to an issue that has affected many families in Iowa and throughout the country: The cost of prescription drugs.

WASHINGTON DC (April 29, 2019) — Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington today introduced legislation requiring the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to study the role and recent merger activity of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), as well as possible anticompetitive behavior.

WASHINGTON DC (April 27, 2019) ― Opioid addiction has devastated the United States over the past decade. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 100 people in the United States die from opioid overdoses each day. In 2017, there was a total of 70,237 drug overdose deaths ― opioids were involved in 47,600 overdose deaths.
