Mallards' Nagy Called Up to AHL's Chicago Wolves

MOLINE, Ill. (February 27, 2014) - Quad City Mallards forward Gergo Nagy has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, the Mallards announced today.

Nagy, 24, leads the Mallards in assists (29) and is tied for the team lead in points (43).  He has scored 14 goals, including two on the power play and two shorthanded- tied for the most on the club- while playing in each of the Mallards' first 49 games.  The 6' 3", 212-pound native of Dunaujvaros, Hungary, has posted a plus/minus rating of +14 in his first season in North America.

Nagy has produced five points (one goal and four assists) in just his last three games and last night picked up a pair of assists in the Mallards' 5-1 win over the Central Hockey League-leading Missouri Mavericks.

Nagy's is the eleventh AHL call-up for a Mallard this season. 

Before arriving in the Quad Cities for the Mallards' preseason training camp, Nagy had already played six games this season in the MOL Liga- which consists of teams in Slovakia, Hungary and Romania- for Slovak club HK Nove Zamky.  He produced one goal and nine assists in those six outings.

Nagy last season played in his homeland with Miskolci Jegesmedve JSE, for whom he ripped off 16 goals and 42 assists for 58 points in 38 games.  Nagy first joined Miskolci Jegesmedve JSE midway through the 2011-12 campaign after spending the prior three and a half seasons with Szekesfehervar, a Hungarian club in the Austrian Erste Bank Eishockey Liga.  Nagy also played for the Hungarian national team at the 2009, 2010 and 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships.

The Mallards next play at home tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Brampton Beast.  That game is the season's penultimate $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and $1 beers are available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.

MALLARDS ROLL PAST MAVS 5-1

MOLINE, Ill. (February 26, 2014) - Gabriel Levesque scored twice and picked up an assist as the host Quad City Mallards ripped off five unanswered goals on the way to a 5-1 win over the Missouri Mavericks Wednesday night.  The win lifted the Mallards (26-15-8, 60 points) into fifth place while the defeat was the league-leading Mavericks' (33-16-2, 68 points) second in as many nights.

The Mallards took control in the second period by scoring three times in just over four and a half minutes.  Nick Grasso's drive from the right wing circle started the onslaught and tied the game at one at 3:31 of the second.  Just a minute and 19 seconds later Justin Fox buried Levesque's feed from the side of the net to give the Mallards a 2-1 lead.  Nicholas Rioux- who would finish the night with a goal and two assists- extended the gap to 3-1 with a power play one timer from the right wing circle at the 8:06 mark.

Levesque struck twice in the third period to put the Mavericks away.  He converted a Mallard two man advantage with a blast from the high slot at 4:15 of the third and capped off the win by burying Jeff Lee's centering pass from the doorstep at 12:17.

The Mallards started rolling only after the Eric Castonguay pounced on a rebound to give Missouri a 1-0 lead while up a man at 5:43 of the first period.

The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Brampton Beast.  That game is the season's penultimate $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and $1 beers are available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.

Iowans for Ending Dog Racing launches organization

DES MOINES, Iowa - Today, leaders from Dubuque and Council Bluffs gathered at the state capitol to roll out "Iowans for Ending Dog Racing" -- a new organization aimed at mobilizing support across the state to end dog racing in Iowa.

The leaders of "Iowans for Ending Dog Racing" include Dubuque Mayor Roy Buol, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation President & CEO Rick Dickinson, Council Bluffs Chamber President Bob Mundt and former Council Bluffs mayor Tom Hanafan. 

The Iowa dog racing industry requires $13 million in subsidies every year, which costs Council Bluffs and Dubuque millions in local economic development and charitable giving.  "Eliminating the requirement that dog racing remain in Dubuque would be an enormous benefit to our community in terms of millions of additional dollars that could be spent on charitable giving and local economic development," said Dubuque Mayor Roy Buol.

Ending dog racing in Iowa would also open up the land where the current track is located in Council Bluffs for new development.  "The dog track in Council Bluffs sits directly off of I-80 on one of the top potential development sites in the entire state," said former Council Bluffs mayor Tom Hanafan.  "Since attendance and interest in dog racing has dramatically declined in the last two decades, our community would benefit greatly by opening up that area for new development and job opportunities."

Iowans for Ending Dog Racing is encouraging citizens from Dubuque, Council Bluffs and across the entire state to study the facts about the dog racing industry and sign the petition to end dog racing in Iowa at www.EndIowaDogRacing.com.

The organization is also encouraging Iowans to contact their local legislator and urge him or her to support proposed legislation to end dog racing in Iowa.  The proposed bipartisan bill that has passed a committee in the Iowa House would provide the dog racing industry with $70 million over seven years to end dog racing and explore new opportunities.  In addition, each casino currently subsidizing the dog racing industry has publicly committed to keeping their track employees on staff and giving them a new role within the casinos. 

"Ending dog racing in Iowa is common sense and is strongly supported by local business, citizens and city officials in Dubuque and Council Bluffs," said Mayor Buol.  "The time has come to turn the page on dog racing and allow these communities to create new opportunities for the people of Iowa."

MALLARDS WELCOME DUCK DYNASTY'S MOUNTAIN MAN SATURDAY NIGHT

$1 Dog/$1 Beer Night Presented by 97X Returns Friday

MOLINE, Ill. (February 25, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards this week will hit the ice for three home games featuring the return of Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I. Friday's and $1 Dog/$1 Beer Friday presented by 97X and culminating in a visit from Duck Dynasty's Mountain Man this Saturday night courtesy of Genesis Health System.

Mountain Man will drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff prior to Saturday night's 7:05 p.m. game between the Mallards and Brampton Beast and will meet fans and sign autographs through the second period of that contest.

Mountain Man, whose real name is Tim Guraedy, is a neighbor of the Robertsons, the Louisiana family that has made a fortune from its best-selling duck calls and is the focus of Duck Dynasty.  Mountain Man is the only Duck Dynasty cast member who is not a Robertson family member or employee of Duck Commander.  He is a neighbor of the Robertsons who operates his own air-conditioning repair business and is known for speaking very slowly.

The Mallards will kick off a seven-game homestand tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. with Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I. Friday's.  If the Mallards defeat the Missouri Mavericks tomorrow evening each fan in attendance will receive a free ticket to the Mallards' next Wednesday game- March 5 again against the Mavericks.

At each Winning Wednesday game fans also have the opportunity to purchase $2 hot dogs and beer at iWireless Center concession stands.  After each Wednesday contest- including this week's- fans are invited to join the Mallards for a post-game party at T.G.I. Friday's adjacent to the iWireless Center at 1425 River Drive in Moline.

Recent Action
The Mallards dropped three of the four games they played in a five day span ending yesterday and have also now gone 1-4-0 in their last five games.  The Mallards did recover from a pair of one-goal losses- last Wednesday at home against Missouri and last Friday in Tulsa- and three straight defeats overall by winning 4-1 in Wichita Saturday night before falling yesterday in Allen.

Tight

The Mallards bounced from fourth to seventh to fourth to fifth and finally into sixth place in the tightly packed CHL standings last week.  They are currently only one point behind fifth place Brampton and just one point ahead of seventh place Tulsa.  The Mallards are two points behind fourth place Allen.  The Mallards, who have played fewer games (48) than any other CHL club, have two games in hand on Allen and five games in hand on Brampton and Tulsa.

 

Busy

The Mallards yesterday played their seventh game in ten days, a stretch during which they went 3-4-0.  That run culminated in the Mallards playing four games in four cities in five nights.  Yesterday's game was also the thirteenth in a stretch that sees the Mallards play 31 games over the final 59 days of the regular season.

Rough Road

The Mallards are in the midst of a stretch that sees them play 18 of their final 30 games against the top four teams in the CHL- Missouri, Rapid City, Denver and Allen.

Balance
While the Mallards rank in the top half of the league in goal scoring- fifth at 3.3 per game- Jeff Lee (18-24-42), who is tied for twentieth, is the only Mallard in the top 20 in the CHL in point scoring.

Between the Pipes

Thomas Heemskerk suffered the loss in goal yesterday after also enduring defeat last Friday in Tulsa.  Those setbacks were his first consecutive regulation losses this season.

 

General Lee
Lee's nine-game point-scoring streak (5-9-14) ended yesterday.  Lee has also recorded 21 points (seven goals and 14 assists) in his last 16 games.   Lee, who last week was named an alternate captain, leads the Mallards in goals (18) and points (42).

Early Exit

Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski was assessed a game misconduct during the second period of yesterday's game after protesting the officiating of that contest.

Trifecta
Matt Boyd scored three times- once at even strength, once shorthanded and once on the power play- in the Mallards last two games.  In the second period of Saturday's win in Wichita, Boyd broke a scoreless tie with a shorthanded goal and struck again at even strength.  He then scored his first power play goal in two seasons with the Mallards in the second period of yesterday's loss in Allen.  Yesterday's goal was Boyd's first on the man advantage since he delivered a power play goal for the host Laredo Bucks on March 3, 2012 against...the Allen Americans.

Done and Done
The Mallards last weekend finished their season series with Tulsa and Wichita.  The Mallards went 2-2-0 against the Oilers and 1-1-1 against the Thunder.

Leaders
Heemskerk ranks fourth in goals against average (2.67), is tied for fourth in shutouts (2) and ranks sixth in save percentage (.912)...Ty Rimmer is also tied for fourth in shutouts (2), is tied for sixth in goals against average (2.81) and ranks eighth in save percentage (.908)... Among rookies, Thomas Frazee is tied for third in goals (13), ranks fifth in points (31) and ranks sixth in assists (18)...Among defensemen, Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel and Matt Duffy are tied for fifth in goals (9) while Dieude-Fauvel is also tied for seventh in points (30) and tied for eighth in assists (21)...Mike Monfredo is tied for tenth in points (24) and assists (20).

Special Teams
On the season the Mallards have converted 14.3 percent of their plays and rank ninth in the CHL on the man advantage but over their last nine games have scored on 25 percent (11-for-44) of their advantages.  The Mallards rank fifth in penalty killing (83.0 percent) and, after Boyd scored during a Wichita power play Saturday, are tied for fourth in shorthanded goals (7).

Head to Head

The Mallards have gone 0-3-1 against Missouri this year.  The Mavericks last Wednesday defeated the Mallards while making their first visit of the season to the iWireless Center.  After playing just one of their first 36 games against Missouri, the Mallards, starting with a 3-1 loss in Independence on February 1, play nine of their final 30 tilts against the Mavericks.  Since entering the CHL in 2010, the Mallards have gone 14-15-3 against the Mavericks and have posted a record of 5-7-2 at home.  Lee (2-4-6) and Missouri's Mike Ramsay (1-5-6) are the top point producers in this year's season series...The Mallards have gone 7-1-3 against Brampton this season and are 2-1-2 against the expansion Beast on home ice.  The two clubs conclude their season series this weekend.  Gergo Nagy is the leading scorer (5-9-14) in the season series.  The Mallards this season have played four games that have ended in overtime- all against the Beast.  Brampton has won three of those four contests, including the last meeting between the two clubs on January 26 when Andrew Fournier scored in sudden death to give the host Beast a 4-3 victory.

Forward Frazee was placed on seven-day injured reserve retroactive to February 15 (upper body) and has missed the Mallards' last five games...Forward Hellyer was placed on 14-day injured reserve retroactive to February 16 (upper body) and has missed the last four games

Americans Drop Mallards 6-2

ALLEN, Texas (February 23, 2014) - The Allen Americans' Jamie Schaafsma and Tyler Ludwig both scored twice and Quad City Mallards coach Terry Ruskowski was ejected in the second period as the host Americans defeated the Mallards 6-2 Sunday.  The loss leaves the Mallards (25-15-8, 58 points) in sixth place in the Central Hockey League while the win lifts the Americans (28-18-4, 60 points) into fourth place.

The Mallards' afternoon took an early turn south when Jamie Schaafsma pounced on a loose puck beside the Quad City net to open the scoring at 5:06 of the first period.  Officiating first drew the ire of Ruskowski and his troops with 41 seconds left in the first when, with the Americans on the power play, Jonathan Zion scored from the slot and his goal was allowed to stand even though the Americans' Jonathan Lessard had knocked over Mallard goaltender Thomas Heemskerk just before Zion fired the puck home.

After Matt Boyd briefly sparked Quad City comeback hopes with a point-blank power play goal at 3:43 of the second period, the Americans took control by scoring three straight goals over the course of a middle frame that saw Ruskowski assessed a game misconduct.  Brian McMillan's tip-in stretched the Alllen lead to 3-1 just 22 seconds after Boyd got the Mallards on the scoreboard.  Both teams were down a man when Ludwig snapped the puck in under the cross bar from the right wing circle at 7:46 of the second to widen the gap to 4-1 and bring about the replacement of Mallard goaltender Thomas Heemskerk by Ty Rimmer.  The Americans were on the power play when Ludwig made it 5-1 with a drive from the high slot at 12:14.  It was after this goal that Ruskowski was given his marching orders.

Schaafscma scored his second goal and the Americans' sixth on a breakaway just past the midway point of the third period.  Gergo Nagy provided a belated Mallard response from the doorstep at 14:06 of the third.

The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Mavericks.  That game is another Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I. Mavs Slip Past Mallards 2-1

MOLINE, Ill. (February 19, 2014) - Obi Aduba broke a 1-1 tie at 9:30 of the third period and the Missouri Mavericks went on to defeat the host Quad City Mallards 2-1 Wednesday night.  With the loss- their second in four days against the Mavericks- the Mallards (24-13-8, 56 points) remain tied for fourth place with the Allen Americans while the victory extended the Mavericks' (32-13-2, 66 points) winning streak to four games and left Missouri six points clear of second place Denver atop the Central Hockey League.

Aduba snapped what proved be the game winner in under the crossbar from the slot just shy of the midway point of the third.

Adbua's goal gave the Mavericks their second lead of the night.  Missouri was shorthanded when Anders Franzon charged into the goalmouth to open the scoring at 4:05 of the second period.  Jeff Lee's wrist shot from the slot tied the game at one for the Mallards at 11:15 of the second.

The Mallards return to action on the road Friday night against the Tulsa Oilers.  The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Mavericks.  That game is another Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I. Friday's.  If the Mallards win next Wednesday, each fan in attendance will receive a free ticket to the Mallards' following Wednesday home game courtesy of T.G.I. Friday's.  After the game fans can join the Mallards at T.G.I. Friday's in Moline for a postgame party.

RIVER BANDITS NATIONAL ANTHEM TRYOUTS, TALENT SEARCH WILL BE FEB. 22

Team looking for National Anthem singers, pregame performers for 2014 season
DAVENPORT, Iowa (FEB. 19, 2014) - As the Quad Cities River Bandits prepare for a season packed with family entertainment, the team is again seeking to bring talent from all across the Quad Cities to Modern Woodmen Park. The team will hold tryouts on Saturday, Feb. 22, for individuals and groups, including National Anthem singers, to perform and entertain fans prior to home games during the 2014 season.
National Anthem and other pre-game performance tryouts will take place on the Sky Deck at Modern Woodmen Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. Registration is first come, first served. Talents can range anywhere from singing, dancing, and comedy to miming, juggling or magic.
"The Quad Cities area has a wealth of talented people, and we want them to share their talent with people throughout the region at the Best Minor League Ballpark this season," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "At Modern Woodmen Park, we put on a unique and fun show every night and entertain our guests from the moment they enter our gates until they walk out the door. Incorporating the talent of the Quad Cities area is a tremendous part of creating that experience."
Everyone participating in the tryouts will perform their talent for a panel of River Bandits staff and local judges. Those talented enough to entertain crowds at River Bandits games this summer will be included in the show during the 2014 season.
"The River Bandits look forward to building a lineup of outstanding local talent to highlight the family entertainment for this season," said General Manager Andrew Chesser. "Modern Woodmen Park is a special gathering place for people across this region, and we are excited to welcome talented local performers and entertainers to be part of the show."
Modern Woodmen Park will also be open for fans to purchase select merchandise, learn about ticket plans and group outings, and purchase or renew ticket packages for the 2014 season. For children ages 14 and under, the River Bandits will offer another one-day special on 2014 Kids Club memberships. Normally $30 per child 14 and under, a membership will be $25 at Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday, Feb. 22. A Kids Club Membership includes a free bleacher ticket good for all River Bandits 2014 regular season home games, a membership card, a T-shirt, a 10 percent discount off purchases in the team store, an email newsletter with exclusive special offers and much more.

Mallards Go Greene

MOLINE, Ill. (February 19, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards have signed forward Chris Greene, the Mallards announced today.

Greene, 28, joins the Mallards from the Southern Professional Hockey League's Peoria Rivermen, to whom he was traded yesterday by the Fayetteville FireAntz of the SPHL.  Greene scored seven goals and totaled 20 points in 35 games with the FireAntz this season.  The 6' 2", 190-pound Massena, New York native has also played three ECHL games- during which he picked up one assist- with the Evansville Icemen this year. 

Now in his eighth professional season, Greene has spent the bulk of his career in the Central Hockey League, having scored 34 goals and registered exactly 100 assists for 134 points in 345 CHL games with the Arizona Sundogs, Wichita Thunder, Corpus Christi IceRays and Denver Cutthroats.  Last season he scored six times and notched 11 points in 49 games with the Cutthroats after scoring a dozen goals and piling up 26 points in 16 games with the Federal Hockey League's 1,000 Islands Privateers at the start of the campaign.

Greene will return to one of his old stomping grounds when the Mallards this weekend embark upon a three game road trip that will include a visit to Wichita to take on the Thunder Saturday night.  Greene spent all or part of four seasons with the Thunder between 2007 and 2012 and reached the President's Cup finals with Wichita in the spring of 2012.  

  

In all, Greene has skated in 464 games for ten clubs in four leagues and produced 69 goals and 216 points since turning pro with the ECHL's Reading Royals in the spring of 2006.  Greene played two seasons in the major junior Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters before stepping into the pro ranks.
