Heemskerk to Iowa Wild Mallards Sign Sherwood

MOLINE, Ill. (November 15, 2013) - The Quad City Mallards today announced goaltender Thomas Heemskerk has been signed to a professional tryout agreement by the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League. The Mallards also announced they have signed goaltender Casey Sherwood.

In three games with the Mallards this season Heemskirk has gone 2-0-0 with a 2.92 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.  The 23-year old Chilliwack, British Columbia, native has stopped 59 of the 62 shots he has faced while winning each of his last two starts.

The 6' 0", 200-pound, Heemskerk went 14-17-3 with a 3.10 goals against average and a .906 save percentage in 38 games with the ECHL's San Francisco Bulls last season. Heemskirk also played in a pair of games for the Worcester Sharks of the AHL last year. Heemskerk gave up just two goals while making 27 saves to post a 1.79 goals against average and a .931 save percentage during that AHL stint.

Heemskerk began his professional career in 2011-12 with the ECHL's Stockton Thunder, for whom he turned in a record of 13-12-0 along with a 3.27 goals against average and a .893 save percentage in 25 games. He also saw AHL action for Worcester as a rookie, taking the ice in four games and registering a 2.14 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.

Heemskerk turned pro after four years in the major junior Western Hockey League. In his final WHL campaign, he finished second in the league in minutes (3,841), third in saves (2041) and fifth in wins (36) while recording a 2.94 goals against average, a .908 save percentage and a pair of shutouts in 65 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The 2010-11 season was the second straight campaign during which Heemskerk landed among the league leaders. In 2009-10, while tending goal for the Everett Silvertips, he topped the Western League in save percentage (.927), finished third in goals against average (2.34) and was tied for seventh in shutouts (4) while going 24-12-4 in 42 games. Heemskerk's efforts helped the Silvertips earn a share of the United States Division title. Heemskerk joined Everett midway through the 2008-09 season after spending his first year and a half in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice.

Sherwood, a 28-year old product of Littleton, Colorado, has joined the Mallards in Denver where the Flock will meet the Denver Cutthroats tonight and tomorrow night. Sherwood is set to suit up for the Mallards against Denver after last week serving as the Cutthroats' back-up goaltender for a pair of games- both on by the Mallards- in the Quad Cities.  Sherwood was waived by the Cutthroats Wednesday when Kieran Millen returned to Denver after a call-up to the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters.

Last season Sherwood had stints as a short-term back-up for both the Cutthroats and the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL without seeing any game action.  He also briefly donned the Grizzlies' colors without getting into a game in 2011-12.

The Mallards next play at home on Friday, November 29 at 7:05 p.m. against the St. Charles Chill. November 29 is also a $1 Dog/$1 Beer Friday presented by 97X.  Fans can purchase hot dogs and beer for $1 at iWireless Center concession stands during all Friday night home games.

Volunteers Needed - Quad Cities FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Tournaments SOON!

Are you looking for a way to volunteer, have fun and give back to the community supporting 600+ students age 9-14?

~ 150 Volunteers (adults and students in college & high school) are needed for supporting the 5th annual Quad Cities FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional qualifiers on December 7 in Moline at John Deere Middle School for Illinois teams and December 14 & 15 in Davenport for Iowa Teams at the Putnam Museum.  In total, the combined tournaments will have 87+ FLL teams with over 600 students with the expected number of attendees over 2,500+ people.  The top teams from the qualifiers will go on to the State Championships in Iowa & Illinois. 

No previous experience or technical background is required for many of the volunteer positions.  Positions requiring a technical background  and /or requiring pre-work with training  are noted including for judging and referees.  

Volunteers will be provided food, beverages and a great experience supporting our local youth!

LATE HELLYER GOAL GIVES MALLARDS WIN OVER DENVER

MOLINE, Ill. (November 9, 2013) - Mike Hellyer broke a 3-3 tie with just 55 seconds left in regulation, Jeff Lee scored twice and Ty Rimmer made 37 saves as the host Quad City Mallards edged the Denver Cutthroats 4-3 Saturday night.

Hellyer scored the game winner from the doorstep on a goalmouth feed from Jim McKenzie.  Rimmer then came up with perhaps his biggest save of the evening, denying Denver's T.J. Fox point-blank to preserve the victory with just seconds left on the clock.

The Mallards had twice battled from behind earlier in the night.  After Jean-Philipp Chabot's power play tip-in gave Denver a 3-2 lead at 7:27 of the second period, the Mallards rebounded to tie the game for a second time when Lee scored from the slot at 11:10 of the second.

The first period saw the Mallards recover after the Cutthroats scored twice in 51 seconds to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.  Garret Brembidge scored the first goal of the night from the slot at 3:17 of the first.  At 4:08 Vincent Arseneau buried a rebound to double the Denver advantage.  The Mallards bounced back when Vladimir Nikiforov halved the margin with a backhander from the left wing circle at the 10:38 mark.  With just a minute and 21 seconds left in the period Lee's wrist shot from the high slot knotted the game.

The Mallards return to action next Friday in Denver.  The Mallards next play at home on Friday, November 29 at 7:05 p.m. against the St. Charles Chill. Veteran's Day Promotion

Splitsville
Six different Mallards scored and 13 different players recorded points last Friday in the Mallards' 6-1 defeat of St. Charles- the Mallards' most lopsided win of the season.  One night later, the Mallards fell 4-3 in their first ever meeting with the Brampton Beast.

 

Goals, Goals, Goals
The Mallards have scored 25 goals and conceded 22 over their first five games.  They lead the Central Hockey League in goals scored (5.0) per game and allow the second most (4.4) per game.  The Mallards last Saturday failed to score at least four goals in a game for the first time.

 

Home Sweet Home
The Mallards have begun a four-game homestand 1-1-0 and are now 2-2-0 at home this season.

 

Shoot on Sight
The Mallards average a league-high 40.6  shots per game, allow just 29.4 per outing (second fewest in the league) and have outshot the opposition in each of their first five games.

 

Twice as Nice
Vladimir Nikiforov (2-6-8) has recorded two points in each of his last four games.

 

Stop Sign
Last Saturday against Brampton the Mallards' Mike Hellyer (4-4-8) and Mike Stinziani (4-4-8) both went pointless for the first time this season

Mike Monfredo (0-5-5) has picked up an assist in each of the Mallards' first five games.

 

Hello/Goodbye
Defenseman Corbin Baldwin was assigned to the Mallards by the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild Saturday, scored in his Mallard debut Saturday night against Brampton and was recalled by Iowa Sunday.

 

Trifecta
Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel set a personal career high and matched a league season high by posting three assists- all in the third period- last Friday. 

Between The Pipes
Thomas Heemskirk last Friday made 27 saves and allowed just one St. Charles goal while posting the first win by a Mallard starting goaltender this season.


Firsts
Like Baldwin, Jeff Lee and Nicholas Rioux (last Friday) both scored their first Mallard goals last weekend...Heemskirk's win last Friday was his first as a Mallard...Thomas Frazee recorded his first Mallard point- an assist- last Friday.

 

Milestones
Jordan Lane last Saturday played his one hundredth career game...With his goal last Friday Nicholas Rioux reached 50 career points... Matt Duffy has notched 96 career points...Gabriel Levesque has played 96 career games...Darren McMillan has collected 93 career CHL assists.

Special Teams
The Mallards last Friday against St. Charles set a league season high by scoring four power goals (on 12 opportunities).  Three of those goals came on 5-on-3 advantages.  The Mallards rank fourth in the CHL in power play efficiency (20.0 percent).  The Mallards, who have allowed a power play goal in each of their last four games, rank seventh in penalty killing (78.9 percent).

Head to Head
The Mallards this Friday meet the Denver Cutthroats for the first time this season.  That game is the first of four straight between the two clubs.  After hosting the Cutthroats this Friday and Saturday, the Mallards will visit in Denver for games November 15 and 16.  After next weekend, the Mallards will not see the Cutthroats again until they wrap up the season series by playing three straight games against Denver on March 12, 14 and 15.  The Mallards last year went 4-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 at home against Denver in what was the Cutthroats' first season.

Blue Grass American Legion Post 711 to Host Inaugural Veterans Day Run

Blue Grass, IA-  American Legion Post 711 in Blue Grass, Iowa is proud to announce that they will be hosting their first-ever fun run/walk on November 9, 2013 to celebrate Veterans' Day.

This event has options for runners and walkers of all ages and capabilities.  The 5K run will begin at 8:00 AM and follow old route 61 south.  The kids half-mile run will begin at 9:30 AM and any children twelve and under are eligible to participate. The family fun run/walk will begin at 10:00 AM and follow a 1-mile route. Families are encouraged to carry posters supporting their loved ones, as well as include the family pet in this run/walk.

A new concept at this event will be the Battle Buddy Run.  This 2-mile race includes two people and one person must be carried at all times. Alternating who is carried is allowed, but no advancement is allowed during transition.

Unique dog-tag medals and t-shirts will be given out to all participants as supplies permit.  Awards and medals will also be given to the top three male and female participants in each age group.

Registration is $20 for anyone 15 years or younger, $25 for adults, $20 for veterans and everyday heroes (Police, firefighters, EMS, teachers); $15 for legionnaires, auxiliary, and Sons of American Legion; and $25 for the family fun run for two participants, $10 for each additional participant.

Registrations will be accepted up until the race time on Saturday morning. Participants are urged to register and pick up their packet at the Blue Grass American Legion on Friday, November 8 from 5:00-8:00 PM or Saturday, November 9 from 6:00-7:30 AM. American Legion Post 711 is located at 106 S. Juniata St. in Blue Grass, IA.

Beast Slips Away from Mallards 4-3

MOLINE, Ill. (November 2, 2013) - Andrew Fournier scored a pair of third period goals- including the game winner- as the Brampton Beast edged the host Quad City Mallards 4-3 Saturday night.

Fournier gave the Beast its fourth lead of the night and third of the third period from the doorstep at 12:58 of the final frame.  Fournier delivered the decider just a minute and 12 seconds after Gergo Nagy's close range power play goal had evened the score at three.  Brampton's Brett Smith had provided a similarly quick response from the left wing circle at the 5:43 mark of the third after the Mallards' Corbin Baldwin had knotted the contest at two at 4:20.  Fournier's goals bookended the third period- he gave the Beast a 2-1 lead by finishing off a 2-on-1 rush just 67 seconds into the period.

The Beast had first moved in front when Michael MacIsaac tipped in a power play opener at 10:38 of the first period.  After missing the net from the high slot, Jeff Lee pounced on the carom from the end boards and backhanded the first Mallard goal in under the cross bar from the bottom of the right wing circle at 6:14 of the second period.

Quad City fell despite outshooting the Beast 32-26 on the night and 17-6 in a third period that saw Brampton goaltender Krisofer Westblom make 15 saves.

The Mallards return to action next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. on home ice against the Denver Cutthroats.  That game is a $1 Dog/$1 Beer Friday presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and $1 beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season, but the Mallards never would take the lead.

Baldwin Returns to Iowa Wild

MOLINE, Ill. (November 3, 2013) - The American Hockey League's Iowa Wild have recalled defenseman Corbin Baldwin from the Quad City Mallards, the Mallards announced today.

Baldwin was assigned to the Mallards by the Wild yesterday and played- and scored- for the Mallards in Quad City's 4-3 loss to the Brampton Beast last night.

The Mallards entered into an affiliation agreement with the both the Iowa Wild and the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild prior to this season.
