Riverssance Festival of Fine Art is celebrating its 28th year as the premier fine arts festival of the Quad Cities, showcasing over 100 of the top artists from throughout North America.  Riverssance is located on a scenic hill overlooking the Mississippi River in the historic Village of East Davenport.  Riverssance will feature a free children's art tent, wine tasting, gourmet food booths and live regional music booked by the River Music Experience.  Riverssance is an event under the MidCoast Fine Arts umbrella which is a leading Quad City non-profit organization focused on stimulating our community's economic vitality through the support of regional visual arts and artists.

In conjunction with the festival, each year, the Harley (Harlequin) Award is given in recognition of an individual(s) or organization that has demonstrated a lasting commitment to the promotion and the advancement of the visual arts and artists in the Quad Cities area. However, this year, we remain silent in honor of our long-time friend, promoter of arts and patron, Bruce Carter, he is missed dearly by the Quad Cities art community and especially by the Riverssance committee members. With Bruce's insight and recommendations, he helped the Riverssance committee choose the past award recipients and he presented the Harley to award winners every year on stage during the festival.

This year's commemorative tee shirt design is by artist Stephen Stieninger, of Altoona, Iowa, "I've always been intrigued by hot air balloons, so thought that this might be a good image for this show. It speaks to another time, with the wind and the sun providing the power to carry the ship to far-flung places. Judging by the number of wind turbine components being transported down I-80, perhaps wind is becoming more of an alternative all the time. Most of my work deals with portraits from the late 19-century, and this fits right in!"

Riverssance Festival of Fine Arts is this weekend, September 19th and 20th, Lindsey Park, in the Village of East Davenport.  With so many schools and communities reducing their art dollars for education this Festival is one way to continue to promote and provide accessibility to fine arts to everyone.  Additionally it is a wonderful event for our community.  Admission is $4 per person with children under 12 free. New this year is a two day pass for $6, the pass allows you to come to Riverssance both Saturday (10a - 5p) and Sunday (10a - 4p) - what an inexpensive way to support the arts!!

If you have questions or would like more information on the artist or the festival, please contact me at 563-529-0382 or mdarland@sedonatek.com.

Senior living community raises awareness and funds through Quad Cities Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®

DAVENPORT, IA (September 10, 2015) -Quad City friends and families are invited to join the associates and residents of Senior Star at Elmore Place as they lace up their shoes in anticipation of the 2015 Quad Cities Walk to End Alzheimer's® on Saturday, September 19 at The Wireless Center, 1201 River Drive, Moline, IL.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. followed by a special ceremony at 9 a.m., and then they're off and walking!

The senior living community is thrilled to be participating in the Quad Cities Walk for a seventh year and is encouraging local friends and neighbors to join them in the fight against Alzheimer's.  To date, Team Elmore has raised more than $20,000 in support of Alzheimer's research and care, making them the number one fundraising team in both the Quad Cities area and the state of Iowa.

Alzheimer's awareness, care and funding is a Senior Star priority.  As such, they will match up to $250,000 for gifts made through all of their Senior Star teams across the nation.  Senior Star is a platinum member of the Alzheimer's Association National Team Program aiming to raise $500,000 company-wide.  "Senior Star has a profound mission to support the Alzheimer's Association," said Marc Strohschein, executive director of Senior Star at Elmore Place.  "It's such an honor to contribute to this cause since every day we have firsthand knowledge of the amazing privilege it is to care for those suffering with Alzheimer's as well as support their families.  These steps, hand-in-hand with residents and their families, are a journey we are proud to take."

Senior Star at Elmore Place continues to be at the forefront of offering creative and innovative services that provide purpose for its memory care residents.  The senior living community offers many signature programs created specifically for their residents living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.  These programs include Senior Star's Destination ProgrammingTM, the Music & MemorySM Program and Snoezelen® Therapy.

For the first time ever, there will be Oktoberfest events in the village of Homestead in the Amana Colonies. Oktoberfest is celebrating 50 years in the colonies and it is fitting that it is expanding beyond the village of Amana, the largest of the colonies.

Marc and June Hershberger, owners of Die Heimat Country Inn, recently acquired access to the old Homestead General Store right next to their B&B on V Street in Homestead. They needed more common space for their guests and would also like to bring more events, retreats, reunions and celebrations to Homestead. They named the building "Next Door: Die Heimat Event Center".

When one of their guests from Oktoberfest last year approached them about hosting a musical duo straight from Germany at their new event center, they were very interested.  Andy Glandt and Heike Besen will perform 3 shows at Next Door on Saturday, October 3.

"Lady Sou and Mister Banjo combine a little flirting between a Sousaphone and a Banjo and provide entertainment, humor and fun for all ages. These two entertainers mix Dixieland, Bluegrass, Country, German and original songs with humor and create a sound that induces joy."

Join us Next Door for the following shows, Sat. Oct. 3: $8 wristband at the door (cash only), includes all 3 shows if you wish. Children under 5 are free.

11:00-12:00- Children's show and activities - food available

2:00-4:00 - Hear Lady Sou and Mister Banjo as you enjoy a German bakery setting with coffee cakes, apple strudel, hot cider, and coffee.

6:00-8:00 - Evening show includes food and drink (BYOB); informal dancing and music jammin' by musicians and friends.
