Few topics have gripped recent global interest as that of the flight of Syrians and others from the tension-filled Mideast as they flee toward Europe with their families. The wave of refugees has reached a level not seen since the end of World War II and shows no signs of stopping. With every new footprint there are questions and challenges - please come and hear the latest perspective from two professionals who have unique views to share. We invite you as a community to listen, respond, and care. This is an international issue with direct local implications.

The German American Heritage Center Presents:

Herbert Quelle, General Consul of the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chicago
Amy Rowell, Director, World Relief, Moline IL

Each will share an overview of their current work with refugees, followed by Q and A.

A freewill donation will be taken to support refugee efforts in three locations:
Kaiserslautern, Germany- Davenport's Sister City

Davenport, Iowa - In 2008, Lenora sent a letter thanking someone named "Kate" from CASI, the Center for Active Seniors in Davenport. Kate had given a gift and a card to Lenora. At 89 years old, she didn't receive too many visitors, let alone Christmas Gifts. In fact, it was the ONLY Christmas gift she had received.

Just think, a small act of kindness by Kate, recognized by Lenora, was the impetus for CASI's Holiday Hat Bash, the Party with a Purpose.

Join us for the 7th Annual Holiday Hat Bash presented by Ruhl and Ruhl Realtors on Thursday, November 12th at 5:30pm. Hat Bash will once again help to make the holidays special for Quad Cities Seniors by purchasing gifts for those who may be forgotten. In 2014, more than $40,000 was raised and while Hats and haberdashery are strongly encouraged, they of course remain optional. Tickets are $30 each until October 31st and increase to $40 November 1st until the day of the event on November 12th.

Chefs from the Quad Cities premier senior living facilities and other local eateries will prepare fabulous food and decadent desserts. Area businesses will compete for the coveted Golden Goblet award as the best bar tending team. The evening culminates when tips are tallied to award the best bartenders and Golden Spoon to the best chef as determined by patrons at the event. Of course, Hat

Bash continues to offer great silent auction and raffle prizes, the ever popular Hat Contest, Necker's Diamond Derby, a new Man Cave complete with a Cigar Pull and get a jump on your holiday shopping in the new Hat Bash Bling Store.

So, grab your hat. Gather your friends and join us at the 2015 Holiday Hat Bash at CASI - The Center for Active Seniors, located at 1035 West Kimberly Road in Davenport, Iowa.

Can't attend? Donations are gratefully accepted and may be sent to: CASI 1035 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport, IA 52806. If further questions, please call (563) 386-7477 or visit www.hatbash.com.

Rock Island, IL: The annual Frieze Lectures partnership between Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College looks back 100 years ago to 1915, and the famous and infamous products of a most notable year.

On four Tuesdays, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 10, Augustana College guest lecturers will consider "1915 - A Landmark Year," and events ranging from the development of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the publishing of Franz Kafka's ground-breaking novel The Metamorphosis, the release of DW Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, and of poems by Robert Frost and TS Eliot that are still read today. All of these events had their roots in 1915, and their effects still echo through our culture today, for both good and ill.

The annual partnership features four lectures by Augustana College professors (without tests or grades) and  fascinating discussions afterward over coffee and cookies at the Rock Island Public Library. All presentations begin at 2:00 pm, in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. This year's Frieze Lectures schedule:

October 20: Dr. Cecilia Vogel, professor of physics, on how the publishing of Einstein's Theory of Relativity in 1915 revolutionized our thinking about the universe.

October 27: Dr. Lisa Seidlitz, associate professor of world languages, on the literary impact of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, 100 years later.

November 3: Dr. Christopher Whitt, associate professor of political science, on events surrounding the 1915 release of DW Griffith's controversial Birth of a Nation and how racism in entertainment shapes politics.

November 10: Farah Marklevits, adjunct instructor in English, on the literary legacy of two great poems first published in 1915: Robert Frost's Road Not Taken and TS Eliot's Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock.
