Paws to Read Offers Reading Contests, Free Events & Education through Aug. 2

Rock Island, IL: The tail end of summer may be approaching, but Paws to Read education events continue at the Rock Island Public Library with something for animal lovers of all stripes.

If your pup needs to learn a few new tricks, make plans to attend "Tails Up, Paws Down," a free dog obedience event at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 16, at the Rock Island Southwest Branch Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Members of the Quad City Dog Obedience Club will demonstrate some of the tricks and simple exercises owners and their dogs can learn together. The event is free and open to all ages.

To learn about the wild animals all around us, make tracks for "Native Mammals" at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, July 29 at the Main Library. The Native Mammals program features speaker Brian Ritter, director of Nahant Marsh and the Program Director for Conservation Technology through the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) and the Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC). He teaches EICC courses on site and uses Nahant preserve as an outdoor classroom. Brian has began and sustained many environmental education programs, biological research projects, and natural resource management practices. The event is free and is open to all ages.

The library also continues its popular summer series of "Read with a Dog" events. Members of QC Canine Assistance Network (QC CAN) bring certified therapy dogs into Rock Island Library locations so children can read to the dogs, providing reading practice and encouragement. Upcoming Read with a Dog events are at 10:30 am on Friday, July 18 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street, on Tuesday, July 22 at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street, and on Wednesday, July 30, at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. The events are free and open to children of all ages.

Additional summer events for children include Lego Block times on Wednesday July 16 and 23, weekly storytimes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays, and a free family movie event at 1:00 pm on Friday, July 25 at the Main Library. Check the library's online calendar for full details.

In July events for teens ages 12 to 18, the library will offer a Teen Crafting event at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 14, a teen scavenger hunt at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, July 22, and a Teen Iron Chef program at 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 24. All of the above events are at the Main Library, 401 19th Street.

And if you're still working on those Paws to Read reading logs and contest entries, don't pause too long. The tail end of summer reading is approaching. Remember to return them to any Rock Island Library by Saturday, Aug. 2. Prizes will be drawn after Aug. 4, with rewards including t-shirts, bags, water bottles, stuffed dog toys, lanyards, and games for children, a NOOK tablet and gift cards for teens, and an Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet and more than $500 in gift cards for adults.

For more information about Rock Island Summer Reading, visit any Rock Island Main, 30/31 or Southwest Branches, go to www.rockislandlibrary.org call 309-732-READ (7323.) A downloadable events calendar is available on the library website at the newsletters and calendars link.

Founded in 1872, the Rock Island Public Library serves the area through three locations, which include the Main, 30/31 and Southwest Branches, community outreach efforts, and online opportunities that provide resources to enhance personal achievement and stimulate the imagination.

Although Red, White & Boom is cancelled due to flooding, there are plenty of other ways to get your fireworks fix around the Quad Cities this Fourth of July weekend. Browse the list of places to go for fireworks shows provided by the Quad City Times here. That said, downtown Davenport is OPEN FOR BUSINESS thanks to the incredible flood-fighting protection from the City of Davenport Public Works crews!  Plan to visit downtown this weekend!

The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival kicks off today on Second Street between Brady and Ripley Streets. Additional workshops will be held in the River Music Experience, too. Please note that the Redstone Parking Ramp will be open and accessible via temporary 2-way traffic on Brady Street. With live music, free workshops, BlueSKool, a photo exhibit, and more, a busy and fun weekend lies ahead! Come on out and show your love for blues in the QC.

The time has come for the return of G. Love & Special Sauce to Downtown Davenport! Tonight, River Music Experience hosts the hip-hop/blues crew in the Redstone Room. Sample RME and Great River Berwery's new brew, Vintage Blonde, during their Sneak Peek Tasting before tonight's show. Great River Brewery will host the Vintage Blonde Official Tapping Party on Saturday. A portion of the proceeds from this beer will help support RME music educational programming!  Make note that RME will remain open July 4th and 5th for MVBS events.

Crews have been hard at working putting up a temporary ramp leading to Modern Woodmen Park so the Quad Cities River Bandits can play ball! Bring the family out tomorrow night for Fourth of July Fireworks, an amazing view of the river,  and to cheer on the River Bandits as they face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Head back Saturday for Fan Appreciation day and Sunday for pregame autographs, bark in the park, and a Hy-Vee tote bag giveaway.

The rising river doesn't keep fresh goods from coming downtown. The Farmer's Market will be open this weekend on 4th Street at the Scott County Office between Western and Gains. Although the Farmer's Market is moving for the weekend, remember that Quad Cities Food Hub, Front Street Brewery, the Front Street Tap Room, and the rest of the businesses downtown are all still open and accessible.   Fresh Deli by Nostalgia Farms will be closed for the holiday, but back open on July 5th.

Stay up-to-date with street closures, detours, and flood protection information by visiting the City of Davenport's website.

See you downtown!

This 4th of July celebration kicks-off with a parade in downtown Bettendorf, Iowa, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 4th.  The celebration continues at Cumberland Square on Spruce Hills Drive.  Opening ceremonies begin at 12 noon with live bands, food vendors, arts & crafts booths, petting zoo, mini golf course, carnival rides, inflatables, an adult bags tournament, and more!  Then watch the Quad City Parachute Team and the fireworks at dusk shooting from Veteran's Memorial Park, 1645 23rd Street. www.bettendorf.org
Don't forget–tomorrow is the East Moline AMVETS 4th of July parade. Are you in?

We'll be lining up at noon at the old Case IH plant in East Moline. We will step off at 1pm.

Front Street Brewery's signature beer is called Raging River Ale.

The name is hitting a little close to home for the long-time Davenport business, which boasts two riverfront locations - one between Pershing and Perry streets on River Drive and the other in the riverfront Freight House building.

The muddy Mississippi may be knocking at the front door, but manager Jenny Ash says both locations are open and serving.

"It was a little slow at lunch today, probably because parking is hard to find," she said. "But this flood is typical and manageable."

Ash has worked at Front Street for 22 years and has been through seven major floods. Improvements in the city's flood protection plan over the years have made them much easier to deal with than the deluge in 1993 that knocked the brewery out of business for an extended period.

"When we see the Hesco barriers going in, it's very reassuring to us," she said, as several patrons stepped in to order lunch and gawk at the rising waters just outside the large picture window out front.

Downstream a bit, Ed Kraklio Jr. of Nostalgia Farms Deli said the lunch rush today was more like a trickle. Too many people don't realize that despite River Drive being closed, you can still access businesses south of the road. Still, he's pleased with the flood protection measures in place.

"We're still prepping and getting ready for the weekend," he said. "Although we will be closed on the 4th because they cancelled Red, White and Boom."

Michelle Magyar, one of the co-owners of Mid-American Glass on River Drive, said they are coping with this flood much better than the last major flood in 2011.

A recent $5 million expansion, with a new building on their site, allows them to ship out a new dock to the north, meaning they no longer need access from River Drive.

"We are an island, but it's business as usual although it's hectic," she said. "The city helped us put this new building in and we can now get in without going through the water."

Any business owner that needs assistance with flood fighting should contact Public Works at (563) 326-7923.

Third annual series of veterans town halls to coincide with July 4th holiday

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced that he will bring his Serving Those Who Served tour to Davenport and Clinton, TOMORROW, THURSDAY, July 3. These forums will give veterans and their families an opportunity to speak directly with Congressman Loebsack. Staff will also be on hand for veterans to seek assistance if they are having issues with the Veterans Administration, or any Federal agency. Loebsack will be joined by representatives from local Veteran Service Organizations, County Veterans Affairs Officers and other groups.

"As Iowans come together to celebrate the birth of our nation, we must take time to remember those men and women who fought for the freedoms we treasure. As a military parent and member of the House Armed Services Committee, I take great pride in Serving Those Who Served. I strongly believe that there is no greater responsibility we have as a nation than to ensure our servicemembers have the support, equipment, and training they need to safely carry out their mission and that we care for our veterans with the same dignity and honor with which they served. I look forward to meeting with veterans and their families to discuss issues important to them and provide any assistance my office can help with."

Loebsack will also hold forums in Muscatine, Iowa City, Ottumwa, Ft. Madison, Burlington, Newton, Knoxville and Washington. This is the third year that Loebsack has hosted town halls specifically for veterans around the July 4th holiday. Veterans, their families and media are invited to attend.
