Rock Island, IL: March is full of reasons to visit your library, with a wide selection of free children's programs for learning and family fun. Choices range from Dr. Seuss celebrations and crafts, to  an early St. Patrick's Day party, technology workshops and crafts during the Rock Island Schools intersession break, and a free magic show to celebrate the birthday of Harry Houdini.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Events:

·         Read Across America Day is March 3, held annually to celebrate the birth of great children's writer Theodore "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. Families are invited to join us at the Rock Island Main Library Children's Room, 401 19th Street, at 6:00 pm on Monday, March 3 to enjoy free Dr. Seuss stories, songs, and crafts for all ages.

·         The library's monthly "crafternoon" also celebrates Dr. Seuss, with several make-and-take crafts for ages 6 to 12. The drop-in crafternoon event is from 4:00 to 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5, also in the Main Library Children's Library.

Saturday St. Patrick's Day Storytime and Party:

·         Families can get ready for St. Patrick's Day with storytime for ages birth to five on the color green from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm on Saturday, March 8, at the Rock Island Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Activities include stories about the color green, singing, dancing, and a green craft.  The fun continues with a "Super Saturday" party for St. Patrick's Day at 2:00, also at the Southwest Branch. Events are for all ages, and include several books, games and crafts to provide holiday fun.

Special Events For School Intersession

Rock Island/Milan Schools are on intersession break starting March 17. If you're looking for free things to do with your children while school is out, try these free events:

·         Making Videos with Animoto: 6:00 pm, Tuesday, March 18, Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. Kids in grades 2 and up can learn how to make a quick video using their own pictures. Participants should bring a flash drive or disk with pictures. Registration is required. Call 309-732-7360.

·         Using TumbleBooks & Book Flix: 4:00 pm, Thursday, March 27, Rock Island Main Library. A special hands-on program for Grades K-6 to demonstrate the fun you can have with free online versions of children's books. Drop in event; no registration required.

·         Craft Extravaganza Days: 10:30 am on  Thursday, March 20,  Main Library, and Tueseday, March 25, at the Rock Island Southwest Branch. Kids in Grades K-6 can choose from several crafts to make and take.

Celebrate Houdini's Birthday -

·         Harry Houdini, the world's greatest magician, was born on March 24. To celebrate, the Children's Room will offer a special magic program for all ages with local magician Rick Eugene, at 6:00 pm on March 24, in the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.

Friday Movie Fest -

·         The Rock Island  Library Children's Department offers free movies and popcorn when the Rock Island/Milan school system dismisses early. The next family film will be shown at 1:00 pm on March 21 in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. The movie is a recent Disney release, loosely based on "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen.

All events are free and open to the public.

Additional events for children and families at Rock Island Libraries include Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning storytimes, Wednesday Lego Block Clubs and Monday evening storytimes. For dates, times and locations, check the library website or pick up a flyer at Rock Island Libraries.

Last year, the Center for Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI) & Great River Brewery teamed up to make the Owney Irish Red Ale to raise funds for CASI. Well, last year was such a hit we brewed it again! The reasoning behind this fundraiser is because since 2009, government funding to non-profit organizations that provide human services has been in steady decline, forcing these service organizations to change much of their funding strategies or face a reduction in their ability to provide critical services to their communities.  Competition amongst non-profits for the "donated" dollar is extreme:  How can an individual not-for profit make itself standout from the crowd to garner more support and exposure plus increase donor dollars?

That's when CASI & Great River Brewery came up with the Owney and" brewed" the prefect fundraising plan. Owney, an old Irish name for "elderly" is on shelves now at retail locations throughout the Quad Cities.  Proceeds from the sale of Owney Irish Red Ale will be used by CASI to fund services for seniors in the Quad City community.  There are two events schedule to celebrate this cause:

Owney Tapping:

March 1, 1-5 p.m. Great River Brewery  332 E 2nd St. Davenport

Golden Keg is at 1:00 p.m.

Food is at 2:00 p.m. provided by Senior Star

Owney Dinner:

March 3, 4:00-7:00 p.m. Kelly's Irish Pub & Grill  Davenport IA

$25.00 tickets: include corn beef, cabbage, roasted potatoes and two pints of Owney. Purchase tickets at CASI, Kelly's or Great River Brewery.

*Proceeds will benefit CASI to help local seniors*

Stop in at any of these events to... Sit up, Take Notice & Raise your Pint to CASI!

Founded in 1973, CASI is a multi-service senior center providing a variety of social, educational, support and wellness programs and activities designed for adults over the age of 60 and their families/caregivers.

Walk Fights Stigma and Helps Provide Free Support to Families in Six Counties

DAVENPORT, Iowa (February 26, 2014) - NAMIWalk will step forward Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Centennial Park in Davenport, Iowa, to raise public awareness about mental illness.

Sponsored by the Greater Mississippi Valley affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the walks help raise funds for free family education classes and support groups for individuals and families living with serious mental illnesses. This is the 11th year for NAMIWalk in the Quad Cities area.

NAMI works to spread the good news that early identification, and access to treatment and recovery supports, is proven effective. The affiliate serves families residing in Muscatine, Clinton, Scott Counties in Iowa and Mercer, Henry, Rock Island Counties in Illinois.

"NAMIWalk is a fun event that supports serious work," said the Greater Mississippi Valley walk manager Shari Baker. "NAMI's work is about hope and recovery, and supporting families with adults and children living with mental illness." More than 60 teams and 1,100 persons participated in the 2013 event.

An organizational meeting will be held Monday, March 10, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley office, 1706 Brady Street, Suite 101, Davenport, Iowa. Corporations, labor, civic, faith and social groups are encouraged to form walk teams. For further information, please contact Shari Baker at namiwalksgmv@gmail.com or 563-322-8870.

Epilepsy affects 65 million people worldwide.  Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the U.S. after migraine, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. Its prevalence is greater than autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease combined.  1 in 26 will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime:  that translates to over 14,700 individuals in our Quad Cities region.

It's time to talk about epilepsy.

The Rev. Dr. James Alexander Forbes, Jr. is President and Founder of the Healing of the Nations Foundation of New York and Senior Minister Emeritus of the Riverside Church. The Healing of the Nations Foundation (www.healingofthenations.com) is a non-partisan, interfaith, not-for-profit organization for the promotion of a holistic understanding of health and wellness. It seeks to broaden the awareness of the inter-relatedness of physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and community health. Healing of the Nations Foundation encourages individuals, families and communities to be seriously committed to achieving and sustaining good health for themselves and to find specific areas where they may offer their support for the health and wellness of others. It seeks to promote conversation and where possible, cooperative ventures across boundaries of faith traditions, professional disciplines and cultural perspectives.

In national and international religious circles, The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. is known as the preacher's preacher because of his extensive preaching career and his charismatic style. Based on the 1995 Baylor University Survey, Newsweek magazine's March 4, 1996 issue recognized Forbes as one of the 12 "most effective preachers" in the English-speaking world. This Pastor, Educator, Administrator, Community Activist and Interfaith Leader was designated as one of America's greatest Black preachers by Ebony magazine in 1984 and 1993. He served as a consultant to the Congress of National Black Churches and one of the past Presidents of The Martin Luther King Fellows. In October 2000, he received the prestigious Earle B. Pleasant Clergy of the Year Award from Religion in American Life and delivered the Raymond J. Peterson Lecture. Forbes has led numerous workshops, retreats, and conferences for the National Council of Churches of Christ USA, the National Association of Campus Ministry, the American Baptist Churches, the United Church of Christ, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Episcopal Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Also in 2004, Dr. Forbes keynoted most of the "Let Justice Roll" tour sponsored by the National Council of Churches of Christ which promoted the prophetic principles in 15-20 cities across the nation.
