About Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Since its creation in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 members to more than 1,000 mayors from across the country. We have more than 1.5 million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country.  The bipartisan coalition, co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has united the nation's mayors around these common goals: protecting communities by holding gun offenders accountable; demanding access to crime gun trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat gun trafficking; and working with legislators to fix weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other dangerous people to get guns.  Learn more at www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org

Rock Island, IL: Winter cold got you down? Is your teen getting cabin fever? Warm up at your Rock Island Library with free events for teens in December and January.

The Rock Island Library will offer a Teen Iron Chef Contest and a Dr. Who Party in December. The monthly Teen Iron Chef contest is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, Dec. 16 at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens choose from a selection of wildly diverse ingredients and make a plated dish to test their culinary skills against other teens for the next Iron Chef crown. The event is offered again at 6:30 pm on Monday, Jan. 13, so if your dish doesn't make the cut one month, there's always another chance.

With so many regenerations, Dr. Who doesn't look a day over 35, but the series just marked its 50th anniversary. On Thurs., Dec. 19, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the library will celebrate the anniversary with a Dr. Who Party with trivia, prizes, and snacks fit for a Time Lord. Hop in your personal TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) machine and come to the Main Library to celebrate!

In January, teens can break through cabin fever with a Teen Gaming Night with Xbox 360 and Wii games at 6:00 pm on Jan. 23, and a party that celebrates all things Sherlock on Thurs, Jan. 30, both at the Main Library. The Sherlock Holmes party includes a mystery to solve, snacks for the Great Detective and Watson, trivia, and prizes.

All teen events are for ages 12 to 18.

For more events at Rock Island Public Libraries, visit the library website at www.rockislandlibrary.org, follow the library on Facebook or Twitter, or call 309-732-7323.

Buffalo Bill Museum Expansion "It's an exciting time in the museum's almost 57 year history," said Robert Schiffke, Executive Director of the Buffalo Bill Museum & River Pilots' Pier, "as we start another expansion of our facility."  The women who were members of the LeClaire Women's Club, who founded the museum in 1957, wouldn't recognize the building today, but they would see many of the items first exhibited in its original location at 114 North Cody Road, LeClaire. Included will be an Archival Workroom allowing careful access to the museum's extensive print and photograph collection, a "hands on" classroom for children visiting the museum, and exhibits that highlight LeClaire's role in the region's economic growth through its shipyards, button factories, and river pilots who opened the region to river commerce.  An architectural drawing of the expansion is available for public view at the museum during regular hours, and donations towards the expansion are being accepted. "We appreciate the support of the community in this project, and donations of artifacts and funds are always welcome.  We are truly a community institution, and volunteers have grown the museum into the LeClaire landmark that it is today" said Connie Curlott, President of the Board of Directors.  The museum is open 9am - 4pm, Mon.-Saturday; 12noon - 4pm, Sundays. Bring Your Four-Legged Kids to Visit the Big Guy
WHAT: Why should Fido miss out on holiday cheer? Nowadays people want pet pictures not just of their children with Santa, but also with their pets as well. Pet pictures with Santa have become a welcome new tradition for many.
Kids, dogs - we love them all! On Monday, December 9 we invite our four-legged friends to "sit" for a photo with Santa at SouthPark Mall. On Monday, December 16 NorthPark Mall will host pet photo night.
At SouthPark Mall, stop by the Wish List tree near Express to help support the Quad City Animal Welfare Center and make a difference in the life of a homeless animal. When attending pet photo night, please be sure to keep our animal friends on their leashes.
WHEN: Pet Night will be held on Monday, December 9, from 6pm-9pm at SouthPark Mall
