On Monday, January 20th the AmeriCorps members that are serving for the City of Davenport both in our city departments and in the schools will be participating in the MLK Day of Service.

What is the MLK Day of Service?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.  The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

This is a great day to provide service and the AmeriCorps have come up with and an even better agency to help...  We are very excited to be hosting the 2014 MLK Day of Service - Kids Against Hunger  event at the Roosevelt Community Center on Monday, January 20th from 1-5:30 pm.  Volunteers will be joining the City of Davenport (IA) AmeriCorps members in packaging dry meals with the Kids Against Hunger - Quad Cities. These meals are sent throughout the world to states, nations and countries to feed the children and families. Our goal is to package 3000 meals to be sent out to these children and families.  The best part of this all is that anyone can do this (volunteers must be aged 5 or older to participate in this volunteer activity. Must be able to stand for a long period of time) ... we are so excited that we will be able to involve the campers from our Roosevelt school day out camp but we are still in need of volunteers for the afternoon.  We were hoping that your groups might be interested in joining us!  This event is registered on the DVC website for anyone who wants to volunteer. Click here to register, or just show up!

MOLINE, IL - Western Illinois University-Quad Cities and WQPT-Quad Cities PBS will host a Children's Literacy Drive from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20 at the WIU-Quad Cities 60th Street campus, 3561 60th St., Moline.

According to Scott Brouette, assistant director of student services at the WIU-QC campus, the drive is designed to provide additional materials for the WIU-QC/WQPT AmeriCorp program to enhance and improve the literacy skills of young children in the community.

"We are collecting children's books, construction paper, glue sticks, stickers, washable markers, puzzles, Play-Doh and blocks of all kinds," Brouette added.

The books and supplies will be donated to the Blackhawk College Family Literacy Program.

WQPT- Quad Cities PBS has been the local public television station for 30 years and  is a media service of Western Illinois University located in Moline, Illinois.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

Casa Quad Cities (Casa QC) will host a community service project to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Casa Davenport office located at 1116 W. 6th Street, Davenport from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Volunteers will assemble donations for charities in the Quad Cities, including the Red Cross of the Quad Cities, Hope Creek Care Center for seniors, the United Way, and Jefferson-Edison Elementary in Davenport. The projects will be kits for families who have lost their homes to fire, activity kits for residents of Hope Creek, and school supplies kits donation for students. Snacks will be provided by a donation from Panera Bread Bakery-Café of Iowa.

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

AmeriCorps volunteers from Casa QC and Prairie State Legal Services will be participating, as well as volunteers from Augustana, Alcoa, and John Deere. Other interested volunteers should register online at http://bit.ly/casamlk2014. For more information, email Vivian Chang, the AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Coordinator, at vchang@casaqc.org or call 563-322-3723.
IA/IL QUAD-CITIES - In February, March and April, Results Marketing and St. Ambrose University will offer Lunch and Learn Recap sessions covering vital leadership concepts, provided through videos of last year's Leadercast presentations.

"At the Lunch and Learn Recap sessions, empowering videos will be shown of the top 2013 Leadercast speakers, as determined by attendee survey results," said Todd Ashby, Managing Partner of Results Marketing. Results Marketing is the hosting sponsor of Leadercast in the Quad-Cities area and St. Ambrose University is a presenting sponsor.
Leadercast Lunch and Learn Recap sessions will be held noon to 1 p.m. on February 7, March 7, and April 4, at the St. Ambrose University Downtown Education Center, located in the New Ventures Center at 331 W. 3rd Street, Davenport, IA 52801. Everyone at the Lunch and Learn events will have a chance to discuss the concepts being presented as they enjoy a delicious Chick-fil-A lunch.
Leadercast is a day-long annual leadership seminar held in Atlanta, Georgia, with simulcasts in key locations worldwide. Last year, nine acclaimed speakers shared their insights about leadership at Leadercast 2013. Results Marketing hosted the simulcast in the Quad-Cities, and has done so for the past four years. More than 200 Quad-Citians attended the simulcast, which was held at the iWireless Center in Moline.
"Past Leadercast attendees have told us that they enjoy reviewing and discussing the information," Ashby said. "At the Recap sessions, a St. Ambrose faculty member will lead the discussion. People who couldn't attend the 2013 event can also attend, if they'd like to find out more about Leadercast."
One Lunch and Learn session featuring best-selling author John Maxwell has already been held this year. Speakers for the remaining 2014 Leadercast Lunch and Learn Recap sessions will be:
February 7: Dr. Henry Cloud, clinical psychologist, author and leadership consultant.
March 7: Andy Stanley, best-selling leadership author and communicator.
April 4: LCDR Rorke Denver, Navy SEAL and star of the 2012 movie, Act of Valor.

Cost of each Leadercast Lunch and Learn Recap session is $15 and includes a complimentary Chick-fil-A lunch.
"We invite Quad-Citians to join us on May 9 at Leadercast Quad Cities 2014," said Ashby. "This year's event will feature a fresh slate of speakers and new content for participants to enjoy."
