QCI Fire of Faith Leadership Meeting Oct. 25th

Join lay and clergy leaders on October 25th, 2012 at 6:30 pm at Sacret Heart Catheral Parish Center (422 E 10th Street, Davenport, IA) for our 2012 Fire of Faith Meeting.The theme this year is Fire of Faith- rekindling our congregations, rekindling our economy, rekindling our democracy. Local congregations will be gathering to discuss local issues, to plan and develop strategies on ways to work together to rejuvenate our congregations. This Fire of Faith campaign is a kick off of our strategic vision and plan for the next three years- a fresh way to look at faith-based community organizing. Congregations have always been the backbone of Gamaliel and QCI. We recognize the congregation, the central place of faith in all religions. We will use the skills of community organizing to build our congregations in membership, in public presence and in financial strength. When our congregations are strong, QCI is strong and our work for Justice is strong. We invite your congregations to find out more about this campaign and join us for this exciting campaign. September Clergy Prayer Vigil Built Community,
Raised Awareness for Jobs Equity

Local faith leaders led a prayer vigil for local jobs, equitable access to jobs and social inclusion for the proposed QC Passenger Rail Project on Sunday September 23rd . The vigil brought together leaders and clergy from the Christian , Muslim and Jewish and Unitarian Faith community -- Lay leaders, clergy, community leaders,  elected officials and candidates joined in prayer to lift up the economnc equity issue and use the rail project as an opportunies to change "business as usual." As Reverened Dave Geenen stated,  "We believe that how the QC Passenger Rail  Project is crafted and administered should reflect our moral concern that all in our community should benefit from this project?especially those living in poverty and are often at a disadvantage to gain access to this great economic development opportunity." Thanks to all who made this happen.



QCI Issue Updates



Transportation and Jobs Equity

As part of  Gamaliel of Illinois, the task force is working to secure a State wide Project Labor Agreement (PLA) from the contractors,unions and Department of Transportation that will include requirements for diversity in the work force on all transportation projects in Illinois. The Task Force is also looking to build a local monitoring committee in early 2013, that will hold accountable IL DOT on the Community Benefits Agreement principles it agreed to. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 17th at 10:00am at Church of Peace-12th and 12th in Rock Island. Join us! The task force will be meeting at 5:30pm on Tuesday, October 30th at the Village Inn on Harrison Street in Davenport.

The punishment in Islam for the DSM-4 diagnosis of kleptomania is the removal of a hand. Recent research indicates that medications which suppress endorphins are effective in curbing the compulsions of a kleptomaniac. Bearing in mind the costs to society of each way of addressing this condition, is it time to rethink religious morals and their impact on culture? Come join a discussion of comparative religious morality as it is addressed by a modern psychological understanding of compulsive behavior.

Ms. Iaccarino will be be defining what Eco Arts entails, the purpose and benefits of this creative approach, various types of Eco Art terminology, and the impact it has on the environment and our communities. The role of Eco Arts and it's impact in advocacy  along with approaches in education will be discussed along with the idea that community building, sustainability and tourism can all benefit from the presence of Eco Art.

About the presenter :

Glorie Iaccarino is a Quad Cities area artist and educator who has spent over twenty years advocating, creating, and promoting art as way to educate, enlighten and entertain the community. She currently works as a facilitator with the Eco Arts Council of the Quad Cities and formerly was the Director of The Quad City Girl Power! Club. She has provided programs and events such as "Celebration of Woman", "The Mobile Art Clinic", and served as a contributing editor with an Eco page with Families First Magazine and as co-host educator with the "Art with Mr. I" art lesson series on WQPT. From public school classrooms, local libraries and area non-profit youth serving organizations, Ms. Iaccarino shares her love, passion, and respect for art as a way of living promoting the philosophy that there is "Art from Life and Life from Art".

Christmas stories at the GAHC!

Davenport, IA- The German American Heritage Center will be hosting Rochelle Pennington as she presents two Christmas themed programs on Saturday, October 27th at 10am and one at 2pm.

Rochelle will start off our two month long holiday celebration at 10am with her talk on the Christmas Truce of WWI. The Christmas Truce was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas 1914, during World War I. Parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and sing Silent Night between their trenches. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides ventured into a "no man's land," where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs.

At 2pm Rochelle will return to tell the heartwarming tale of the Christmas Schooner, the famous ship that brought Christmas trees to German immigrant families in Chicago. This year is the 100th anniversary of its last voyage before its mysterious wreck.

Events in October for the LeClaire Community Library

Public is invited to Friends of the LeClaire Community Library Events in LeClaire, Iowa
The Friends of the LeClaire Community Library will have its Semi-Annual Book Sale Friday, October 12th from 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. and Saturday, October 13th 10:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. with a $1 "Grab Bag" beginning at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday. We will offer hardcover and paperback books, music CDs and books on CD, DVDs, video games, and jigsaw puzzles.  If you would like to donate materials to our on-going book sale, please see our Donation Policy on our website www.leclairelibrary.org.
On Monday, October 22nd from 6:00-7:00 P.M., the Friends of the LeClaire Community Library will host a free program featuring Blues Guitarist & Historian Scott Ainslie, a master of traditional blues guitar styles, drawing on the styles of Blues legends Robert Johnson & Muddy Walters. Scott is a noted performer and scholar with more than a decade of experience teaching elements of African and African-American music to students of all ages, both in the classroom and from the stage. Night at the Shelter - Sleep Out

Davenport, IA - Have you ever wanted to sleep outside under the stars at the local baseball field?? Well here is your chance - spend the night at Modern Woodmen Park - home of the QC River Bandits on Friday, October 19th by going to the website www.humilityofmaryshelter.com and print off your Night at the Shelter - Sleep Out Donation Detail packet. Simply ask everyone you know "Will you support me and my effort to help the homeless?" No amount is too small and a $10 donation will support one bed for one night. The top THREE fundraisers in each category will receive a prize and have their name printed on the back of next year's Sleep Out shirt. Participate in the Build Your Own Shelter contest and then stay the night in what you build. Activities throughout the evening will include music, a performance by ComedySportz, a Poverty Simulation, special activities and the Build Your Own Shelter contest.

The purpose for this event is to bring awareness to homelessness in the Quad City Area and raise funds for Humility of Mary Shelter (HMSI). HMSI took over the shelter in September 2008 when it was at high risk of closing. The community's overwhelming support played a vital role in the development of HMSI and it is this support that will ensure the continuation of shelter services to the homeless men and women in the Quad City Area well into the future.

Feed the Celebration! The Holiday Train is Returning!

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is coming to Davenport and will stop here on Thursday, December 6th at 2pm at the Florian Keen parking lot (Western Ave @ West River Drive - by Modern Woodman Park).

That afternoon, the community will rally together and collect food and funds for Churches United's 24 food pantries and enjoy a special holiday experience right here in the Quad Cities! The train will stop in Davenport for an approximate 45 minute performance.

Admission is a food or cash donation. There will be a drive through area to drop off food and cash donations and see the decorated train.

Here's some information:
* The Holiday Train is 1,000 feet in length with 14 decorated rail cars including a modified box car that's been turned into a traveling stage for performers. Canadian recording artist Shaun Verreault of "Wide Mouth Mason" and Juno award-winning singer Melanie Doane will be the musical headliners on the US Holiday Train keeping the community warm with well known holiday tunes.
* Since 1999, the CP Holiday Train program has generated over 1000 tons of food donations and raised over $4 million for food programs.

7th Annual Classic Car Cruise

Come join us for the 7th annual Classic Car Cruise hosted by Sergeant Peppers Auto Shop and benefiting Toys For Tots on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

The party starts at 3pm in the Northpark Mall parking lot by Sears and JC Penney's. A police-escorted continuous cruise will begin at 4:30pm and cruise down Welcome Way to 3rd Street, then back up Brady Street to the mall.  District 15 motorcycles will be positioned along the route.  Get out your lawn chairs and watch the classics drive by.

Please bring an unwrapped toy and help fill the Santamobile.  U.S. Marines will be on hand to collect the toys.  Door prizes.  50/50 raffle.  Food available from Hy-Vee.  Music provided by 3D Sound D.J. Dave Palmer.

And then join them on Sunday, October 7th and watch the parade of District 15 motorcycles as they make their annual Toys For Tots trek beginning at 1pm from the West Kimberly Wal-Mart, down Division Street, across 3rd Street, up Brady Street and then across Kimberly  Road to Hobby Lobby.

We request that these events remain alcohol-free.  Thank you for your support.

Haunted Island Hayrack Rides

The Friends of Credit Island Park present the 2012 Haunted Island Hayrack Rides.

This family-friendly event will take place on October 12 and 13 at Credit Island Park, 2200 West River Drive in Davenport. The fun begins at 6:30pm with storytelling, hayrack rides and more. Concessions are available inside the Credit Island Lodge.

Cost is $12 for adults, $8 for kids 4 - 11, and kids 3 and under are free.

Rain date is Oct 19 and 20.

Jordan Catholic School Walk-a-thon

Jordan Catholic School's annual walk-a-thon details:

  • Friday October 5th from 10:00-11:30am
  • Students have collected nearly $15,000 in pledge donations for new textbooks.
  • mmediately following mass at St. Pius X Church (about 9:30am,) students will move to the school gym for a brief (15-20 minute) assembly.
  • 5th grader Maggie Schaecher thought it a fitting day to present Fourth Grade Science Teacher Karen Lavell with a framed print
  • of a May 2012 Quad City Times article highlighting her annual laboratory rat experiment which teaches the value of nutrition.
  • Hy-Vee will provide a Hydration Station (water bottles) directly behind the store along 20th avenue, for the children as they walk.
  • Grand prizes will be awarded to the top 3 families.
  • Eighth grade students will lead the walk with Kindergarten & first grade bringing up the rear and walking an abbreviated route. The walk-a-thon will begin at approximately 10am and will commence with popsicles in the Farrell Hall parking lot. Please call me with questions & thank you for your partnership.
