Galena Wine Lovers' Weekend and ARC Taste of Galena committees orchestrate new event

GALENA, Ill. - Committee members of the Galena Wine Lovers' Weekend and ARC Taste of Galena have come together to plan a new event slated for Friday, September 6, 2013 from 7-10 p.m. at the Galena Convention Center, 900 Galena Square Dr., Galena.

The Galena Food and Wine Festival aspires to be a culinary dream featuring the talents of Galena area restaurants as well wine tasting, showcasing approximately 150 varieties, sponsored by Family Beer & Liquor.

"We are excited to be working with the Wine Lovers' Weekend committee to launch this new event. This event will not replace the ARC Taste of Galena we hold in February, but rather will be a nice compliment featuring 12 area restaurants," said Sarah Petersen, representing the ARC Taste of Galena.

Tickets for the Galena Food and Wine Festival are $50 per person and available online at www.galenafoodandwinefestival.com. "We highly recommend purchasing tickets early as our sister events - Galena Wine Lovers' Weekend and ARC Taste of Galena - have quickly sold out in advance," said Fred Bonnet, of Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant and representing Galena Wine Lovers' Weekend.

Living Lands & Waters 2013 Barge Party In A New Location

Rock Island, IL/July 8, 2013 - Local residents will have a chance to tour Living Lands & Waters' Teamwork Barge Thursday, August 8^th from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Schwiebert Riverfront Park on 1^st Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois. Chad Pregracke and his Living Lands & Waters' staff and crew will be on hand to celebrate sixteen years of river cleanups, environmental education workshops, the MillionTrees project and engaging communities in river stewardship.

"We are excited about the new location. We outgrew the location in Davenport and Schwiebert Riverfront Park offers us the ability to continue to grow the Barge Party each year," said Amber Pribyl, Coordinator of this year's Living Lands & Waters Barge Party.

The menu for this year's Barge Party will feature a fish fry & shrimp boil dinner. The Barge Party will also feature live music by Justin Morrissey and The Candymakers, as well as a silent art auction, featuring everything from recycled items to handmade sculptures.

The Barge Party will also feature a Best Boater Award at this years' Barge Party. Nominate yourself or a fellow boater for the Best Boater Award. Living Lands & Waters will select five finalists to receive two complimentary tickets to the Barge Party. Chad Pregracke started Living Lands & Waters in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America's major rivers and to the education of people about environmental issues. From his single boat beginning, LL&W has grown into an internationally known organization with a fleet of barges and workboats. LL&W engages thousands of volunteers each year in river cleanups, hands-on environmental educational workshops, the Great Mississippi River Cleanup, Adopt-a- River-Mile program and the MillionTrees Project.

The 14th annual Iowa SIDS Foundation Walk for the Future will be held Saturday, August 24, 2013 in eight cities across Iowa.

The 2013 walk celebrates fourteen years of walking and fundraising to fight SIDS and SUID in Iowa. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the sudden, unexpected and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy infant up to the age of one year. Brian Olshansky, MD, FACC, FAHA, FHRS, a board certified clinical cardiac electrophysiologist, is a tenured Professor Emeritus of Medicine at The University of Iowa.

The psychiatry profession has been given a free ride for years concocting mutilating surgeries, inhumane treatment of the "insane" and crippling drugs to control behavior. To date, none of their techniques or medicines have been proven effective for any specific condition.

It is time to rethink the profession and develop sound ways to deal with "mental illness".

The profession is particularly adept at creating disturbances that appear on the surface to have validity but with a careful look are nothing more than methods to label and disable. Further, they have worked hand in hand with pharmaceutical companies to create new ways to drug, intoxicate and control the public at high expense and at high risk to our society.

The unwitting public has taken the psychiatric profession at face value -Their therapies are potentially deadly and there is little if any real scientific evidence of benefit.

About the author:

Dr. Olshansky graduated from Carleton College, completed his MD at the University of Arizona, residency training in Internal Medicine at Bellevue/NYU Hospitals, Cardiology Fellowship training at The University of Iowa, and Electrophysiology Fellowship training at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Following training, Dr. Olshansky has been a faculty member at the University of Alabama, Case Western Reserve University and Loyola University before returning to The University of Iowa. He has directed electrophysiology laboratories and training programs at Loyola University Medical Center and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics using state-of-the-art techniques .

Dr. Olshansky is known for his diversity of interests ranging from cardiac electrophysiology to holistic issues regarding medical care and the doctor-patient relationship.

He has taught ethics to medical students and has been listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America" for many years.

He has lectured internationally and has been a visiting professor at institutions throughout the world. His goal is to help improve medical care to patients throughout the world.

Dr. Olshansky's research interests are extensive. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials and has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts (a total of over 400 manuscripts, including non-peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, e-publications, slide series and editorials), over 200 abstracts, 45 chapters and three books.

Broadway Historic District Hosts Wine Walk on Au gust 3

Quad Citians can enjoy an evening of wine and food at Broadway Historic District's 3rd Annual Wine Walk, 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, August 3. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. Only 100 tickets are available.

Event goers will receive a sampling of 16 wines and gourmet appetizers while getting an inside look into four premier houses in the Broadway neighborhood. The event will also feature a basket raffle.

Serengeti Steve to Visit Rock Island Main Library on Thursday

Reptile handler and reality show contestant "Serengeti Steve" will visit the Rock Island Main Library at 3:30 pm on Thursday, July 11 with a show of snakes and more. The free performance for all ages is in the library's second-floor Community Room at 401 19^th Street.

Serengeti Steve began his career in herpetology over 20 years ago and now performs over 600 shows a year. He has raised and maintained over 200 species of reptiles, arachnids and insects from around the globe. He recently appeared on NBC's "America's Got Talent," making it to the Las Vegas finals.

The thrilling, yet comical, presentation involves audience participation. Attendees will have an opportunity to help hold these unique creatures in a safe environment. The free show is part of the library's "Have Book, Will Travel" summer programming for children and families.

In other Rock Island Library events on July 11, the library's teen department will present a free "library mini-golf" event for ages 12 to 18 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Main Library. Teens can play a mini-golf course throughout the library for fun and prizes in the Beneath the Surface teen reading program.

This Week in Downtown Davenport: 7/5 - 7/10

The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival is under way! Keep in mind the festival is now on 2nd street from Ripley St. to Brady St. in Downtown Davenport. Additional stages and workshops will be housed in the River Music Experience and its courtyard outside. Show your love for blues at one of the finest fests in the country and catch Kenny Wayne Shepherd along with many more amazing bands!

Take some time to appreciate the art around Downtown Davenport this weekend. Head to the Figge for their new exhibition Studio1: Pop Art Soup to see iconic images by Andy Warhol. Or, familiarize yourself with another newer exhibit during the docent-guided tour of the No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service Exhibition. If you prefer to be the artist, be sure to try out the Acrylic Painting Class for beginners.

Looking for environmental, cultural, and physical activities for kids? How about an afternoon of obstacle courses, bounce houses, basket ball, kite making, and more? Celebrate at Davenport Parks and Recreation on Wednesday during Youthfest! Due to high water, the event has been relocated from Centennial Park to the Fejevary Children's Center.

The Adler Theater's Grace Potter & the Nocturnals show is right around the corner on July 13! Be sure to get your tickets before it's too late. While you're at it, grab your tickets for the Headbanger's Burlesque Part Deux coming to the Adler on July 20th, too.

With summer flying by, take a moment to appreciate the beautiful weather while you can! Enjoy a delicious lunch outdoors on the patio of Sippi's or Barrel House 211. After lunch, walk on over to The Ruby Slipper or the SiS International Shop to peruse wide selections of gifts and trinkets! Of course, you can't beat the fine dining at Duck City Bistro if you're in the mood for something unique and delicious for dinner.

Last but not least, we'd like to thank everyone who came out for Red White & Boom! The weather was beautiful and we were thrilled to give you a great fireworks show from the Centennial Bridge.
