Des Moines, IA  (September 6, 2012) - On October 13th, 2012, more than 400 participants will gather at Principal Park in Downtown Des Moines as part of the American Lung Association in Iowa's Fight for Air Walk.  Participants and sponsors hope to fundraise more than $50,000 to support the American Lung Association's fight for healthy lungs and healthy air.

Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer's Care, Support and Research

[Davenport, IA 52807] - The Alzheimer's Association is inviting Quad-City residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's. The I Wireless in Moline, IL will be the site of Walk on Saturday, September 8th at 9:00 a.m.

Walk to End Alzheimer's is more than a walk. It is an experience for the thousand participants in the Quad-Cities who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer's research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services.  Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation's sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today's estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer's. In addition to the 2.5 mile walk participants will enjoy vendors, hospitality and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer's. Start or join a team today at alz.org/walk

"There has never been a greater need for the citizens of the Quad-Cities to join in the fight against Alzheimer's disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer's," said Joni Johnson, an Alzheimer's Association Community Relations Coordinator. "Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 279,00 plus residents of Illinois & Iowa living with Alzheimer's, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research."

About the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's:

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer's Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer's Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer's. Together, we can end Alzheimer's - the nation's sixth-leading cause of death.

About the Alzheimer's Association:

The Alzheimer's Association is the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Le Claire, Iowa, September 4, 2012 - It's a Wild, Wild West Weekend in Le Claire and Mississippi River Distilling Company is celebrating the olden days during First Friday on September 7 from 5:30-8:00 p.m.  Also on hand for the evening will be the crew from Irish Dog Blood Mary Mix and Benny's Bloody Mary Beef Straws sampling out their local products.  MRDC will be doing a pint glass promotion.  With every bottle of spirits purchased or by combing any three of Irish Dog or Beef Straws, you'll receive a free limited edition Bloody Mary pint glass, while supplies last.  There are only 100 glasses available, so make plans to come early!

In the bar we'll be hanging on to the last days of summer and welcoming the fast approaching days of fall.  We'll feature a Strawberry Lemon Drop Martini using MRDC Pride of the Wapsi Strawberry Vodka, sweet and sour mix, lemon juice and simple syrup.  Next up is the Butterscotch Baron with River Baron Artisan Spirit, 7Up and a splash of Butterscotch Schnapps.  Chef Stephanie is preparing her special rimming spice mix for Bloody Mary's and will be serving samples of an Irish Dog crab dip and "Wild West Weenies" with River Baron BBQ sauce.

Mark your calendars now for several other big upcoming events at MRDC.  October's First Friday, October 5, will mark the return of Iowa Coffee Company Coffee Liqueur.  This seasonal product is back by popular demand for fall and holiday celebrations.  There will also be a small release of the very popular Cody Road Whiskey in October, followed by a larger release of Cody Road Bourbon and our new Cody Road Rye Whiskey coming in November.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.  The tour takes visitors through the entire distilling process.  Tours end in the Grand Tasting Room with free samples of products for those patrons over 21 years of age.

Camp Kesem is a free, week-long overnight summer camp for children ages 6-16 who have or had a parent with cancer.   Camp Kesem is organized by Augustana College student volunteers under the guidance of its Advisory Committee of local professionals with related expertise.  Augustana College students serve as counselors and undergo over forty hours of extensive training prior to camp.

Campers participate in a host of fun activities including sports, drama, arts & crafts, adventure, scavenger hunts, and talent shows.  In addition, each night before bed, the campers have "Cabin Chat," a time for the campers to talk and open up to their peers and counselors.

"It gives both my child and myself a week to spread our wings separate from each other. He's exactly where he wants to be, surrounded by kids in similar situations and the warmth and support of the counselors," says a parent of camper, age 12.

Children who have a parent who has or had cancer often lack sufficient external support because they are neither physically ill nor visibly distinct from others.  The complexity of emotions they experience can easily go without attention.  It is often challenging for these children to find peers with whom they can relate, resulting in feelings of isolation and fear and putting the children at risk for depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.

Kesem advisor for Camp Kesem-Stanford, Dr. Michael Amylon, pediatric oncologist at Stanford Hospital emphasizes the importance of an experience like Kesem.  "These kids have their world knocked right out from under them, and often they have no where to turn to get help and support.  Camp Kesem provides a magical place of respite and play, and a group of other kids in the same situation who understand what it's all about and can offer unique and important peer understanding and friendship."

Camp Kesem was founded one year ago at Augustana College. This past summer it held its first successful week of camp and was able to serve 35 children from the Quad Cities and greater Iowa area. Augustana College's camp will welcome 60 kids to this year's session. Applications for the 2013 camp session will be available in November on the Camp Kesem Augustana website.

More information on Camp Kesem can be found at www.campkesem.org/augustana.

$42 Million in Capital Funding to Add New Classroom Building on the Moline Campus and Create Nearly 300 Construction Jobs

MOLINE - August 29, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas, Moline Mayor Don Welvaert, and several state and community leaders to break ground on Phase Two of the Western Illinois University (WIU) Riverfront Campus expansion. The new $42 million classroom building funded by the Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program will create nearly 300 construction jobs and allow the university's Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, and Fine Arts and Communication programs to relocate to the Riverfront Campus. Today's groundbreaking is part of the governor's commitment to put people back to work and strengthen Illinois' infrastructure.

"Today is a milestone in the 100-year history of Western Illinois University's Riverfront Campus," Governor Pat Quinn said. "This investment will create jobs now and in the future by expanding education opportunities that will help our students compete in the 21st century economy."

Construction on the 94,800-square-foot classroom building should be complete by summer 2014 to open in time for the 2014 fall semester. The Riverfront Campus expansion will allow WIU to serve more than 3,000 Quad Cities-area students. The campus currently serves more than 1,370 students at its 60th Street campus in Moline and at the Riverfront Campus.

The project is administered by the Capital Development Board, which oversees state-funded, non-road construction projects. Governor Quinn opened the $18.4 million Building One in January, which concluded the first phase of the state-funded construction work on the Moline campus. With today's groundbreaking, the state has funded more than $60 million worth of work at the Riverfront Campus. Phases One and Two will create between 135 and 166 new permanent jobs, increase annual Riverfront Campus graduates by more than 300, and have an annual economic impact of between $20 and $24 million in the Quad Cities area.

"We are so thankful for our many partners. Because of these relationships and the support Western Illinois University has received from a variety of constituency groups, we have moved the expansion of Western Illinois University's Quad Cities campus forward to provide the region with outstanding public higher education opportunities," said WIU President Jack Thomas.

"The presence of Western Illinois University in the Quad Cities helps define who we are. Knowledge is power. Raising the bar on the education level in the Quad Cities area identifies us as a community with a highly skilled workforce and an appreciation for higher education," said Moline Mayor Don Welvaert.

Governor Quinn's Illinois Jobs Now! program includes $1.5 billion for higher education, including $788 million for public universities and $400 million for community colleges. The overall $31 billion program is creating and supporting an estimated 439,000 construction jobs and is the largest capital construction program in Illinois history.

The 2012 David R. Collins Children's Literature Festival would not be possible without its
partners, the Davenport Public Library, Bi-State Literacy Council, and the Midwest Writing
