PUBLIC MEETING TO FEATURE OPEN FORUM

Iran, Syria and the UN: How can we ignore the humanitarian crisis?

Yashar Vasef, executive director of the Iowa United Nations Association (UNA), will address the links between understanding the role of the United Nations (UN), the relationship between the U.S. and Iran and how the current humanitarian crisis in Syria fits into the picture of Middle East tensions.

Vasef, a native of Iran, who along with family fled the country in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980's, will speak at a free, public forum at The Canticle, home of the Sisters of. Francis, 841-13th Ave. No., Clinton, on Monday, March 18, beginning at 6:30 pm.  The meeting is co-sponsored by the Clinton Branch, American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Clinton Franciscan Center for Active Nonviolence and Peacemaking.  The Clinton Franciscans have served on the Iowa UNA Board for nearly 20 years.

Incorporating his personal history and his experience working for UNA, Vasef will analyze the current situation, examining how the U.S. is utilizing the UN against Iran and vice versa and presenting an overview of the role the UN plays in the process of alleviating tensions between the two nations.

For more information on the public forum, visit www.ClintonFranciscans.com or call Sisters of St. Francis, 563-242-7611.

Since 2009, government funding to non-profit organizations that provide human services has been in steady decline, forcing these service organizations to change much of their funding strategies or face a reduction in their ability to provide critical services to their communities. Competition amongst non-profits for the "donated" dollar is extreme: How can an individual not-for profit make itself standout from the crowd to garner more support and exposure plus increase donor dollars?

Known for their "outside the box" fundraising programs, senior center CASI (Center for Active Seniors, Inc.) in Davenport, Iowa, has" brewed" the prefect fundraising plan. CASI has teamed up with a regional microbrewery, Great River Brewery, to create a new beer dedicated to seniors and senior services. The results: Owney Irish Red Ale. Owney, an old Irish name for "elderly" is on shelves now at retail locations throughout the Quad Cities. Proceeds from the sale of Owney Irish Red Ale will be used by CASI to fund services for seniors in the Quad City community.

Additionally, distributors Vanguard Distributing Co. and Stern Beverages are providing marketing materials used to promote awareness of CASI's programs and services.

On March 9, a formal tapping event is planned at Great River Brewery (332 E 2nd St., Davenport) beginning at 1:00 p.m. Area senior centers and the general public are invited to join in the festivities. Food will be provided by The Fountains Senior Living Community of Bettendorf.

We all have a senior in our life that needs our help. So toast CASI with a pint of Owney and support our senior services!

Founded in 1973, CASI is a multi-service nationally accredited senior center providing a variety of social, educational, support and wellness programs and activities designed for adults over the age of 60 and their families/caregivers.

Rock Island -- Christian Care invites the general public to test its trivia knowledge at the 3rd Annual Trivia Night fundraiser on Friday, March 22, at The Rock, located at 302 First Street in Coal Valley, Illinois. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and competition begins at 7:00 p.m.

The top two teams will receive a cash prize. Mulligans will be available for purchase to augment scores. Competitors and spectators can participate in both a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Food and beverages will be available for sale and players may also bring their own snacks.

Proceeds will help Christian Care continue to provide much-needed services for homeless men and abused women and children, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The organization also provides a 24-hour crisis hotline and a community meal site that serves meals 19 times a week, every week of the year, for anyone who's hungry.

Pre-registration for Christian Care's Trivia Night is strongly encouraged and seating is limited. A table team of up to eight players may register for $80; individuals may register for $10 a person. To register or for more information, please contact Mary Maland at (309) 792-4102 or email her at cc.mary10@gmail.com.
