Art Talk Highlights the CHallenges of Reaching Space

Davenport, IOWA (July 2012) The Figge Art Museum presents the art talk "Physics 101: The Challenges of Reaching Space" at 7 pm Thursday, August 2.  Brett McCarty will lead the talk and focus on the obstacles that NASA has had to overcome in their quest to explore outer space. The talk is offered in conjunction with the special exhibition NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration and is free with Figge membership or paid admission.

Mr. McCarty's talk will look at some of the scientific and economic challenges that have faced the NASA program, including the high cost of sending material to space, the challenges of gravity, the biological effects of zero-gravity, sustaining life in orbit and the hazards of radiation and space debris. The talk will also focus the technologies and studies that assisted in NASA's missions to space.

Participants can also expect to have Mr. McCarty dispel some common misconceptions during the talk. "Despite the popular belief, the gravity in space is not actually 'zero gravity.' Instead, it is more accurately described as micro-gravity and orbiting the earth is actually like skydiving only you never hit the earth," explained Mr. McCarty

Brett McCarty is an adjunct physics instructor, specializing in condensed matter physics, at St. Ambrose University. He received his master's in science from Iowa State University.

About NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration

In celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2008, NASA collaborated with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum on the exhibition NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration. Drawn from the collections of NASA and the National Air and Space Museum, the exhibition features 72 works of art commissioned by the NASA Art Program. Established soon after the inception of the U.S. space program in 1958, NASA's Art Program provides a unique way to communicate the accomplishments, setbacks, and sheer excitement of space exploration to the public. The selected works span the entire history of NASA and include paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and other media by such artists as Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, William Wegman and Jamie Wyeth.

NASA | ART at the Figge Art Museum is generously sponsored by the ALCOA Foundation, John Deere, Genesis Health Systems and Cobham, plc.

NASA | ART was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in cooperation with the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. The Smithsonian Community Grant program, funded by MetLife Foundation, is a proud sponsor of "NASA | ART" public programs.

Davenport, IA / July 16, 2012 - Local residents will have a chance to tour Living Lands & Waters' new Teamwork Barge Thursday, August 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at the Lake Davenport Sailing Club at Oneida Avenue and River Drive.  The 150-foot long barge features a handicapped-accessible classroom, which can host up to 60 students at a time, as well as sleeping quarters for an 8 person Living Lands & Waters crew.  The LL&W crew will be providing tours of the new classroom during the annual Barge Party, a celebration and appreciation event for volunteers and supporters of the environmental group.  Chad Pregracke and his Living Lands & Waters' staff and crew will be on hand to celebrate fifteen years of river cleanups, environmental education workshops, the MillionTrees project and engaging communities in river stewardship.

The menu for this year's Barge Party will feature a fish fry & shrimp boil and Root Beer floats featuring River Rat Root Beer and Whitey's Ice cream.  The Barge Party will also feature live music by Alan Sweet and Justin Morrissey and a silent art auction, featuring the works of nearly a dozen regional artists who donated river-inspired pieces, including salvaged material sculptures, mixed media painting, folk art, driftwood pieces, quilts and glass art.  Chad Pregracke will update guests on the progress they've made this year. "We couldn't keep these barges running, making the river a cleaner place, without the support of Quad-Citians who volunteer and support Living Lands & Waters. It all makes a difference and we are so grateful," said Chad Pregracke, Founder & President of Living Lands & Waters. Tickets for the event are $35 per person. Reservations can be made by calling the office at (309) 496-9848 or going to their website www.livinglandsandwaters.org. Spots are limited, so please make your reservation soon to guarantee a seat.

Teachers interested in exploring a workshop for their students should contact Tammy Becker at LL&W:  tammy@livinglandsandwaters.org. "We have had over 1,600 teachers in our Educational Workshops dating back to 2003.  The new barge will create an opportunity for thousands of students to experience the river first hand" said Pregracke.   Also on display at the barge party will be LL&W's new one-thousand horse power tow boat which is needed to push the new floating classroom.  The floating classroom was made possible by the generous support of five of LL&W's long-term partners:  Cargill, ADM, Caterpillar, AEP River Operations and Ingram Barge Company, as well as hundreds of area union carpenters and skilled tradesmen.

The Living Lands & Waters Barge Party is held in appreciation of volunteers, supporters and fans of LL&W's efforts, as a celebration of the power of committed staff, volunteers and sponsors working together to meet an important need.

Chad Pregracke started Living Lands & Waters in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America's major rivers and to the education of people about environmental issues. From his single boat beginning, LL&W has grown into an internationally known organization with a fleet of barges and workboats.  LL&W engages thousands of volunteers each year in river cleanups, hands-on environmental education workshops, the Great Mississippi River Cleanup, Adopt-a- River-Mile programs and the MillionTrees Project.

"The Living Matrix"

movie:

directed and produced by

Harry Massey and Greg Becker

as informational medicine becomes more prevalent and mainstream, this movie talks about how different energy systems and information medicine are used in healing.

There are many other important definitions and studies presented in this movie. The definitions of "Energy Cardiology", "The Placebo Affect", "Meridian Lines" and more all point to a new way of looking at healing, in addition to the importance of conventional medicine.

From some of the world's top geneticists and scientists, this film was masterfully crafted to hold interest, evoke emotion and educate viewers.

In the words of  scientist: Peter Fraser, featured in the movie:

"Healing is learning to correct the human body field so that it works according to the original blueprint"

The movie will be shown during the regular

Cops Say Legalize Drugs. One Tells Why.

Tony Ryan, a member of the board of directors of LEAP - Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (www.LEAP.cc), will speak on the effects of Drug Prohibition, at a 7:00 p.m., Wednesday August 1 forum at Central Perk Coffee House located at 226 West Third Street in downtown Davenport, Iowa.

LEAP is a 10-year-old organization, with 50,000 members, ranging from current and former law-enforcement officers to prosecutors to judges. Ryan served 36 years in Denver, Colorado's police department before retiring as a lieutenant, in 2003.

Ryan was interviewed for a story in the Davenport based River Cities' Reader newspaper published on July 19, 2012. The full story is available online at: http://www.rcreader.com/news/cops-say-legalize-drugs-tony-ryan/

The article asserts that the price of the drug war has been undeniably high.  From a law-enforcement perspective, Ryan states police also pay a price beyond the actual costs of drug-enforcement programs. Narcotics officers have low morale, he stated in the interview. And "in law enforcement in general, the greatest source of complaints ... has to do with narcotics enforcement." Further, the effort has failed in two key areas: supply and demand. Illegal-drug use now is at roughly the same level as it was 20 years ago, while prices have dropped for nearly all illegal drugs except marijuana, Ryan noted to the Reader.

The forum organizer, Mark Nelson, is hopeful to confirm the attendance and participation of area prosecutors, drug-court officials and potentially judges from Iowa's seventh judicial district.

The forum will begin at 7pm on Wednesday, August 1st at the Central Perk Coffee House in downtown Davenport and is free and open to the public.

OELWEIN, Iowa - Shooting sports enthusiasts from across the upper Midwest will enjoy a fun day of sporting clays competition on Sunday, Aug. 12 while raising thousands of dollars for the fight against cance.

Fayette County Conservation Club will host the fifth annual Shootout Against Cancer on Aug. 12, featuring a 100-target sporting clays course, lunch on the grounds, special shooting games, raffles and prizes -- all to fund cancer research supported by the University of Iowa Foundation.

All the day's events will be held on the club's grounds at Oelwein. Cost for the sporting clays course and lunch is $50.

The sporting clays shoot begins at 9 a.m., is open to all, and is designed for all levels of shooters from novices to veterans.

All participants will register on the club grounds the day of the shoot. Event organizers encourage shooters to register in three-person teams. Individual shooters can also register and be assigned to a team.

All teams must be registered, entered, and on the course by 1 p.m.

The Fayette County Conservation Club extends a special invitation to anyone interested in learning about and taking part in the game of sporting clays.

The Fayette club grounds are on the west edge of Oelwein off County Highway C50 (West Charles Street).  Signs will be posted with directions to the grounds and parking areas.

The annual Shootout against Cancer has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. The 2011 Shootout drew 144 shooters and raised $7,810 for University of Iowa Foundation cancer research funding.

The 100-target sporting clays course will be designed and set up by sporting clays range designers Targets On The Move. The course will offer a variety of targets and will be fun for both veteran and novice shooters said Hugh Curtis, Fayette County Conservation Club member and organizer of the annual Shootout Against Cancer.

Raffle tickets for a Beretta A400 Xcel 12 gauge semi-automatic sporting clays target shotgun will also be available on the grounds for $10 each or three for $20.

"The Shootout Against Cancer is a fun event for shooters of all ages and ability levels," said Don Stohr, club member and Shootout organizer. "In addition to raising funds for the fight against cancer, this is also an opportunity to get more people involved in the shooting sports."

(Quad Cities) - The newest addition to Street Fest this year features a competition for local and regional
firefighters to show off their skills while competing for a trophy and bragging rights! The event will be the
first time Firefighter Water Fights have been held in Davenport since 1972. The competition starts at noon on
Saturday, July 28 at 2nd & Ripley Streets.

The object of Water Fights is straight forward; it's essentially a reverse tug-of-war. A water ball is suspended
ten feet above the ground on a cable. Two teams of three firefighters are placed on either side of the ball
and on the starting command, use their fire hoses to push the ball towards the opposing team's territory. A
winner is announced when the ball reaches the marked point on the cable or if the ball is in the opponent's
territory when time ends.

While the object of the game is simple, its execution isn't. Add full firefighting protective gear, water spray,
the heat of the day, and another determined team of firefighters across from you, and the task at hand
becomes increasingly difficult. The competing firefighters must use their training to keep the water on target
while listening for commands from their teammates and moving forward to push the water ball into their
opponent's territory.

Firefighter water fights have long been a way for firefighters to practice essential skills needed at the scene
of a fire or rescue site. These firefighters take great pride in their skills and abilities and enjoy putting those
into action in a friendly competition.

The Firefighter Water Fights will be an exciting addition to Street Fest and will surely become a tradition in
future years!
