Space Talk at the Figge Art Museum

Art Talk Highlights the CHallenges of Reaching Space

Davenport, IOWA (July 2012) The Figge Art Museum presents the art talk "Physics 101: The Challenges of Reaching Space" at 7 pm Thursday, August 2. Brett McCarty will lead the talk and focus on the obstacles that NASA has had to overcome in their quest to explore outer space. The talk is offered in conjunction with the special exhibition NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration and is free with Figge membership or paid admission.

Mr. McCarty's talk will look at some of the scientific and economic challenges that have faced the NASA program, including the high cost of sending material to space, the challenges of gravity, the biological effects of zero-gravity, sustaining life in orbit and the hazards of radiation and space debris. The talk will also focus the technologies and studies that assisted in NASA's missions to space.

Participants can also expect to have Mr. McCarty dispel some common misconceptions during the talk. "Despite the popular belief, the gravity in space is not actually 'zero gravity.' Instead, it is more accurately described as micro-gravity and orbiting the earth is actually like skydiving only you never hit the earth," explained Mr. McCarty

Brett McCarty is an adjunct physics instructor, specializing in condensed matter physics, at St. Ambrose University. He received his master's in science from Iowa State University.

Take a shot at Bow Fishing

This free class at Nahant Marsh Education Center will involve one hour of class room instruction on the techniques of bow fishing, places, and best time of the year to fish. It will also include information on the equipment such as were to obtain it, as well as how it works. After the class room instruction there will be a demonstration in the marsh using under water targets at different depths. Followed by a question answer session at the end of the class.

Join Fishscale Girl and explore the difference between the Amazon River and the Great Mississippi River. Fishscale Girl tells of her origin and how she came to be. Experience the challenging sport of archery. This camp is designed to teach safety techniques and basic fundamentals of archery. Learn the history of archery and how this sport is used today. Hands-on activities will allow children to develop their skills. Equipment is provided.

Kindernature - 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Learn about the fish of our area with hands-on activities and actually go fishing in the Vander Veer lagoon. This fun and creative program will teach about how fish swim and live underwater.

Kindernature is a nature program for young children ages 3 to 5 which enriches awareness and appreciation for nature. Each class focuses on an environmental theme includes a story, hands-on activity, craft and themed snack. Class fee is $6 per child. An adult must accompany the child. Registration is required and class size is limited to 20 children. Each class begins at 10am in the Vander Veer Conservatory.

Toddling on the Wild Side!

Come experience Fejervary Learning Center's toddling nature program and bring your 18-24 month old child to experience hands-on nature explorations. Programs start at 10am and will last for 45 minutes. For only $2, children will discover programs like natures many beautiful animals, reptiles, insects, plants and how weather impacts our amazing creatures. The program will be offered at Fejervary 1780 West 12th Street, Davenport, IA 52804 and will meet by Mother Goose on Thursdays starting June 7th through August 9th.

Wild walks in the park

Take some time out this summer to enjoy a guided walk through Duck Creek Park at 10 am and 1pm at Vander Veer. Each week will explore nature from different angles. These walks are for children ages 5-12. Wild Walks are free to the public and each will have a fun and educational component. Walks will be every Monday starting June 4th and ending August 6th.

Living Lands & Waters to Hold Annual Barge Party Featuring New Teamwork Barge

Davenport, IA / July 16, 2012 - Local residents will have a chance to tour Living Lands & Waters' new Teamwork Barge Thursday, August 9^th from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at the Lake Davenport Sailing Club at Oneida Avenue and River Drive. The 150-foot long barge features a handicapped-accessible classroom, which can host up to 60 students at a time, as well as sleeping quarters for an 8 person Living Lands & Waters crew. The LL&W crew will be providing tours of the new classroom during the annual Barge Party, a celebration and appreciation event for volunteers and supporters of the environmental group. Chad Pregracke and his Living Lands & Waters' staff and crew will be on hand to celebrate fifteen years of river cleanups, environmental education workshops, the MillionTrees project and engaging communities in river stewardship.

The menu for this year's Barge Party will feature a fish fry & shrimp boil and Root Beer floats featuring River Rat Root Beer and Whitey's Ice cream. The Barge Party will also feature live music by Alan Sweet and Justin Morrissey and a silent art auction, featuring the works of nearly a dozen regional artists who donated river-inspired pieces, including salvaged material sculptures, mixed media painting, folk art, driftwood pieces, quilts and glass art. Chad Pregracke will update guests on the progress they've made this year. "We couldn't keep these barges running, making the river a cleaner place, without the support of Quad-Citians who volunteer and support Living Lands & Waters. It all makes a difference and we are so grateful," said Chad Pregracke, Founder & President of Living Lands & Waters. Tickets for the event are $35 per person. The new barge will create an opportunity for thousands of students to experience the river first hand" said Pregracke. Also on display at the barge party will be LL&W's new one-thousand horse power tow boat which is needed to push the new floating classroom. The floating classroom was made possible by the generous support of five of LL&W's long-term partners: Cargill, ADM, Caterpillar, AEP River Operations and Ingram Barge Company, as well as hundreds of area union carpenters and skilled tradesmen.

The Living Lands & Waters Barge Party is held in appreciation of volunteers, supporters and fans of LL&W's efforts, as a celebration of the power of committed staff, volunteers and sponsors working together to meet an important need.

Chad Pregracke started Living Lands & Waters in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America's major rivers and to the education of people about environmental issues. From his single boat beginning, LL&W has grown into an internationally known organization with a fleet of barges and workboats. LL&W engages thousands of volunteers each year in river cleanups, hands-on environmental education workshops, the Great Mississippi River Cleanup, Adopt-a- River-Mile programs and the MillionTrees Project.

Cop to Speak on Drug Prohibition Wed August 1st in Davenport

Cops Say Legalize Drugs. One Tells Why.

Tony Ryan, a member of the board of directors of LEAP - Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (www.LEAP.cc), will speak on the effects of Drug Prohibition, at a 7:00 p.m., Wednesday August 1 forum at Central Perk Coffee House located at 226 West Third Street in downtown Davenport, Iowa.

LEAP is a 10-year-old organization, with 50,000 members, ranging from current and former law-enforcement officers to prosecutors to judges. Ryan served 36 years in Denver, Colorado's police department before retiring as a lieutenant, in 2003.

The article asserts that the price of the drug war has been undeniably high. From a law-enforcement perspective, Ryan states police also pay a price beyond the actual costs of drug-enforcement programs. Narcotics officers have low morale, he stated in the interview. And "in law enforcement in general, the greatest source of complaints ... has to do with narcotics enforcement." Further, the effort has failed in two key areas: supply and demand. Illegal-drug use now is at roughly the same level as it was 20 years ago, while prices have dropped for nearly all illegal drugs except marijuana, Ryan noted to the Reader.

The forum organizer, Mark Nelson, is hopeful to confirm the attendance and participation of area prosecutors, drug-court officials and potentially judges from Iowa's seventh judicial district.

The forum will begin at 7pm on Wednesday, August 1st at the Central Perk Coffee House in downtown Davenport and is free and open to the public.

Richard's love of Art has been with him all his life. His creativity expressed In his art brings Fine Art to your daily life, as sculpture to accent your garden and your home both indoors and outdoors. All creations are one-of-a-kind.

As Augustana he developed an Ash-glaze, named after him as Rich's Ash-Glaze which is still being used at the college.

This Week in Downtown Davenport July 27th Edition

Bix 7 Weekend is upon us and Street Fest presented by the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will return downtown for its 41st year! The fest will feature classic staples such as food and craft vendors along with live music and the brand new exciting Fire Fighter Water Fights event taking place on Saturday.

Click here for downtown street closure info, and remember to use the parking ramps. The parking ramps are only $5 this weekend, and you can park right in the middle of the action with only a short walk to all of the fun.

Of course, the star of the show this weekend is the Quad-City Times Bix 7! The Bix 7 includes a variety of events leading up to the race on Saturday morning such as the Walk This Walk Benefit on Thursday evening, Orthopaedic Specialists Race Packet Pick-up and Expo, the Junior Bix, and the Genesis Carb It Up Pre-Race Pasta Dinner.

Downtown has added new events this year! Barrel House 211's Bix Bash will fill Second Street with live music between Pershing Avenue and Perry Streets all weekend! Davinci's Cocktails & Dining is hosting a Bix Party @ 3rd & Main, too! Of course, they'll be plenty of outdoor fun on 3rd Street near Mac's Tavern, Carriage Haus, Kilkenny's and Shenanigans, as well.

River Music Experience is hosting a late-night party in the Redstone Room on Saturday beginning at 10PM! River Roots veterans Dan Hubbard & The Humadors open the show and local favorites Minus Six hit the stage late-night after Street Fest wraps up. Smooth Money Gesture plays tonight, and catch the Myers Brothers and 45 On High Friday. Additional RME events this week including Rock Camp USA, King of the Tramps, Community Drum Circle, Open Mic Night, and more.

Street Fest will feature a special brew made by Great River Brewery just for the occasion! Pick-up a Street Fest Copper Ale at any of the beverage tents located at the fest. Speaking of local breweries, don't forget to check out the new Front Street Tap House at the Freight House if you stop by the Freight House Farmers Market on Saturday.

Congratulations to our friends at Hotel Blackhawk's Bix Bistro for garnering the attention of the preeminent voice in the wine industry. Bix Bistro recently won a Wine Spectator 2012 Award of Excellence!

Even though it's the middle of July, it's never too early to start holiday shopping. The German American Heritage Center is hosting a Christmas in July Sale on Saturday and Sunday featuring quality toys from Germany. On Sunday, attend their "Which Frederick was Greater" discussion.
