Would you and your sweetheart like to enjoy a romantic evening for Valentine's Day - without having to worry about childcare? The Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) and Scott County Family Y are offering a convenient solution that parents and kids alike are sure to enjoy. The news release below tells more.

The QCSO Valentine's Day celebration will provide a full slate of romantic entertainment. In addition to Quad-Citians, we also anticipate that Midwest couples from quite a distance will be driving in for both the Gala and the Concert.
Please note, the starting time of the QCSO Valentine's Day Gala has been changed from 5 p.m. February 11 to 4:30 p.m. (earlier releases on the event state 5 p.m.).

If you have questions for the Scott County Family Y on childcare during the QCSO Valentine's Day celebration, feel free to contact:
Frank Klipsch IV, Corporate Communications Director at the Scott County Family Y at Phone: (563) 332-0234, Ext. 620 or Cell: (563) 570-0770
New Kingdom Trailriders is a non-profit organization which helps disabled individuals in a therapeutic horseback riding program.  We rely totally on donations and volunteers to keep our program running.  God has been good to us so far because we are in our 28th year of operation.
We are having a fund-raising event at Circa 21 in Rock Island on Thursday, March 22, 2012.  The doors open at 5:45 pm and the dinner/show begins at 6:00 pm.  The price of admission is $25.00 which is half the normal price at Circa 21.  We are hoping that the audience will be moved by our program, and will kindly donate as much as they can to help us through another year at New Kingdom Trailriders.
Circa is providing their usual "wonderful" buffet and will provide some of the entertainment.  NKT will give a short speech about what we do.  We hope to bring some of our adorable kids on stage who our program has helped physcially, mentally, and socially.

Hilltop Campus Village will hold an open house on February 7th at its new administrative offices located in the Priester Building, 601 Brady Street, Davenport. The event will be 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

The Hilltop Campus Village board of directors and its service committees will discuss the Main Street organization's past successes and current activities.  Also, the event will help attendees learn more about volunteering and networking with the Hilltop business owners.

Director Scott Tunnicliff said the board hopes neighborhood residents as well as Hilltop businesses will attend. Refreshments will be provided by The Center, Kong's Thai Bistro, and Donuts & More.

Parking is available east of Brady Street along 6th Street or on the west side of Brady in parking lots adjacent to Vickie Anne Palmer Hall (formerly the Masonic Temple) and the Iowa Correctional Facility.

Downtown Davenport is loaded with events this week, but first, we'd like to open with some big news.  Restoration St. Louis has begun its $4.5M renovation of the historic Renwick Building!  Eighteen beautiful market-rate apartments and new commercial space are on the way, and we couldn't be more excited.

The good news doesn't end there, because Downtown Central Perk just celebrated its grand opening in the historic Bayer Building at 226 West 3rd Street!  The coffe shop features vegetarian and vegan entrees, as well as direct trade coffees and more.

The coffee shop is a major component of the Bayer Building's ongoing restoration, that once completed, will also boast a restored façade and additional market-rate apartments.  Check out our photo album and this QC-Times article, too.
Bridal Expo
If you're planning a wedding, don't miss the Jaycees Bridal Expo at the RiverCenter this weekend!  Next door, the Tribute National Talent Contest will be in full swing at the Adler Theatre.

Celebrate our local artistic and musical talent during the Augustana Sights & Sounds Final Friday event at Bucktown!  This unique photography exhibit will make for a special night, and if you're still not familiar with Final Friday, check out this video made by our friends at Star Dog Gallery.

River Roots Live veterans, The Giving Tree Band, are headlining a gig at River Music Experience!  Local favorite Tim Stop will also be performing at RME, and fans of electro-funk should grab tickets now to see Eliot Lipp on Wednesday.  There are a whopping eight FREE events this week at RME!  Bring the family down to give the Community Drum Circle a try, too.

You've probably heard of Carnival in Rio and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but are you familiar with Fasching and Karneval?  Learn all about these fascinating events at the German American Heritage Center, and mark your calendar to catch their next showing of The White Rose film, as well.

Support our youth by attending the Young Artist Exhibit opening at the Figge, and if you're in the mood for a sporting event, attend a hockey game at River's Edge.  Last, but not least, don't forget that you can still shop for groceries at the Freight House Farmers Market all winter long indoors.

See you downtown!

The German American Heritage Center and the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities are happy to announce additional showings of companion films to the current "White Rose" Exhibit at GAHC. We had a full house on Sunday, Jan.29 and apologize to those who had to be turned away! Please try to join us for the following opportunities:

On Feb 4th at 4pm the film, "The White Rose" will be re-shown at the Figge Art Museum in the John Deere Auditorium. The Figge is located at 225 W. 2nd St. Davenport, Ia. Admission is $5 or free for students with I.D.

During the Second World War, a small group of students at the University of Munich begin to question the decisions of Germany's Nazi government. The students' form a resistance cell
which they name the "White Rose" and secretly distribute newsletters to the public. At first small in numbers and fearful of discovery, the White Rose begins to gain massive support after a Nazi Gauleiter nearly incites a student riot after a provocative speech. At this point, the matter is taken over by the German Gestapo, who pledges to hunt down and destroy the members of the White Rose.

Lena Stolze stars in this acclaimed feature film based on the true story of five German students- -Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, Alexander Schmorell--and their
professor Kurt Huber who, as the White Rose, protested the Nazi regime.

On February 5th at 1pm and at 4pm, the film, "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" will be shown at the Figge Art Museum in the John Deere Auditorium. The Figge is located at 225 W. 2nd St. Davenport, IA. Admission for the film is $5 or free for students with I.D.

2005 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign language Film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days is the true story of Germanys most famous anti-Nazi heroine brought to thrilling dramatic life. Sophie Scholl stars Julia Jentsch in a luminous performance as the fearless activist of the underground student resistance group, The White Rose.

Using historical records of her incarceration, the film re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence in 1943 Munich. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to her comrades, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless. -IMDB review

This film is shown in conjunction with the exhibit The White Rose at the German American Heritage Center located at 712 W. 2nd St. Davenport, IA. Sponsored by GAHC, The Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and the German Consulate of Chicago, Rauch Family Foundation II, Doris and Victor Day Foundation, and the Rock Island Community Foundation.

For the Feb 17 event, DubStar has added more games, more prizes, and a few new elements, including team challenges to the show.

"Last year was so much fun, and such a tremendous success." siad returning host, Brandon Gale. "The only complaint was that not everyone could play, so we added five more games and two team challenges," Gale added. "At times like these, when funds are tight, this is a great way to get involved and help an amazing cause. In exchange for your support, our service is to offer you a night of fun and fabulous prizes."

Congressman Loebsack, area residents, others to testify

WASHINGTON, D.C.–On Friday, January 27, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, will convene a field hearing of the Committee to discuss ways to rebuild the middle class.  Congressman Dave Loebsack will join Harkin as part of the hearing.

"For decades, the middle class has been  falling behind," said Harkin.  "Wages have not kept up with costs, and families' savings accounts have dried up along with home values and good jobs. Iowans are justifiably worried about the future.

"It does not have to be this way.  It is time to rise to these challenges and face them head-on, as a nation, by remembering what made our country great. Creating good jobs, investing in education, rebuilding our infrastructure, and preparing our workforce for the 21st Century will help to ensure that the middle class has a bright future ahead, in Iowa and around the country."

Harkin has held a series of hearings in Washington over the past year examining the causes behind the decline of America's middle class.  Last year, Harkin staff members visited all 99 counties to gather insight into the challenges facing middle class families.  This field hearing will focus on what is working in the Quad Cities to rebuild the backbone of America's economy.

HEARING: "Rebuilding the Middle Class: What Washington can learn from Iowa"

DATE: Friday, January 27, 2012

TIME:

12:15 PM: Tour: Prior to the hearing, Harkin and Loebsack will tour the welding room at the Blong Center, which houses a partnership between John Deere, the local schools, and workers.

1:15 PM: Hearing begins

PLACE: John T. Blong Tech Center?, 8500 Hillandale Road, Davenport
