USO Presents Carnival in Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Rock Island Arsenal, Sponsored by PepsiCo

The USO (United Service Organizations) of Illinois is bringing the USO Carnival to the Rock Island Arsenal on July 7th as part of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Arsenal. Sponsored by PepsiCo, the USO Carnival will bring Quad Cities military and civilian families together in support of the U.S. Armed Forces and the Arsenal.

Open to the public, the event will offer families a full day of fun. Included in the festivities is Cirque-tacular Entertainment, a unique act of high caliber circus, specialty, and novelty performers. The USO of Illinois' own music program, Spirit of the USO Band, comprised of Chicago-based, professional musicians and entertainers will perform on the main stage. Especially for military kids, the USO Discovery Kids Arts & Crafts Tent will provide kids the opportunity to make crafts and special handmade projects. The Blackhawks Puck Shot Challenge will challenge festivalgoers to test their puck skills with the Stanley Cup Champs. The Military Family Resources Tent will feature booths dedicated to best-in-class military community resources including representatives in such areas as Career, Education, Financial and Legal Resources. The USO Carnival has been made possible in part by the Chicago Blackhawks, Chevrolet, Stern Beverage, Inc. and Modern Woodmen.

Global food and beverage leader PepsiCo, the event's premier sponsor, is in its third year of partnership with the USO of Illinois through mentorship programs, wounded warrior transition empowerment and local community support. In celebration of this partnership, PepsiCo volunteers will also be on hand to give away "Pepsi Pack" care packages to the first 500 military kids attending the Carnival.

"We're proud to sponsor this wonderful event that brings together the local military community," notes Brett Lucas, national chair of the VALOR employee resource group at PepsiCo.  "From partnerships and outreach events, to mentoring programs and hiring initiatives, PepsiCo and VALOR are committed to supporting service members, veterans and their families in every way."

The Rock Island Arsenal anchors the military community of the Quad Cities and touches the lives of all Quad Citians; it is a common thread that ties communities together in the Quad Cities. The mission of the USO is to enhance the quality of life of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families and to create a cooperative relationship between U.S. military andcivilian communities throughout the state of Illinois. The USO Carnival is an opportunity for the USO and the Arsenal to join together in their bringing communities together in support of the military.

The Rock Island Arsenal has supported the U.S. military's warfighters in the field for 150 years through the continued accomplishment of its duty to America's warfighters in a relevant, ready and reliable manner.Today, the Rock Island Arsenal is a major military installation where 8,000military and civilian individuals are employed.

Hello!

Red, White, and Boom is almost here and we can't wait for Tuesday, July 3rd!  The largest fireworks display from Chicago to St. Louis will feature nearly twice as many fireworks this year and will light up the sky with more than 2,500 shells and over 2,400 pounds of fireworks!

We'd like to thank Genesis Health System and Riverboat Development Authority for hosting this great event along with all of our generous sponsors that make Red White & Boom possible.

The Mississippi Valley Blues Fest takes over LeClaire Park in the days leading up to Red, White, and Boom!  Acts this year include Sugar Ray and The Bluetones, Super Chikan, Kelley Hunt, Brooks Family Blues Dynasty, Johnny Rawls, Bobby Rush, Kenny Neal, and Coco Montoya.  This is one of the country's finest Blues festivals, so don't miss it!

We're proud to host one of  the most critically acclaimed bands in America downtown.  Wilco is returning to the Adler Theatre Tuesday night!  Their reputation continues to grow; the Austin Chronicle says "Wilco's new millennial emergence as an avant-garde Americana juggernaut now grooves a new found equilibrium."

A performance of "A Couple of Blaguards " comes to Mac's Tavern on Saturday night!  This touring show comes to downtown via the Irish American Theatre Company and the Irish Heritage Center of Greater Cincinnati.

Beat the heat and enjoy FREE admission at the Figge today and Friday!  The Waxing Poetic Panel will host a lively discussion about artistic inspirations and expression tonight in the Figge auditorium.  Presenters at the event include Leslie Bell, E. Marie Bertram, Ryan Collins, and David Murray. The host of WVIK's "Art Talks," Bruce Carter, will host the event.  Also, the River Bandits are home all week down the street with lots of fireworks and giveaways t.

Tinsley Ellis, the hard-rocking blues-soaked guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter performs on the Redstone Room stage Monday night!   Free RME shows this week include Live Lunches with Alan Sweet, Mo, Dustin Lee, Luke Redfield, and Blues Cafe.  Other events at the River Music experience include Snogulated Pig, Nick and The Ovorols, Community Drum Circle, Matthew Kylestewa, and Float Face Down.

Final Friday at the Bucktown Center for the Arts signals the end to another month.  The theme this month is an Art Education Celebration.  We hope to see every at Bucktown on Friday and all the other events taking place downtown this week.

See you downtown!

(Quad Cities) -- Red, White & Boom organizers and officials at the Rock Island Arsenal have joined forces this year to give the Quad Cities a bi-state celebration that won't soon be forgotten. From one of the largest fireworks displays from Omaha to Chicago, to live music by the Navy band and the Spirit of the USO Band,  Red, White & Boom - America's Birthday Party - promises to deliver plenty of patriotic family fun.

"With over 2,400 shells weighing in at an impressive 2,550 pounds, this will easily be the largest fireworks display for Red White & Boom and also one the biggest displays throughout the Midwest up and down the Mississippi River," said Ken Croken, Red White & Boom committee chairman. "We also have a few fun surprises in store for the community, too."

With Red, White & Boom scheduled for July 3, the AMVETS 4th of July Parade themed Hooah! Quad Cities, and the Rock Island Arsenal's 150th Anniversary celebration coming up July 7, there is nearly a week of fireworks, music, food and remembrance to embark upon.

Events for Red White and Boom will open at 6 p.m. in LeClaire Park in Davenport and Schwiebert Park in Rock Island. Both riverfronts will have live music, a USO Discovery Kids Tent, thank you notes for our troops, food, beer gardens, and of course, the largest fireworks display on the Mississippi River beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Both Davenport and Rock Island will have ceremonies with a proclamation read by the Quad Cities mayors highlighting the 150th Anniversary of the Rock Island Arsenal and will end with a presentation of the Quad  Cities Military Community Covenant to the commands of the Rock Island Arsenal.

The Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce also recently launched" Hooah! Quad Cities," a military appreciation and community goodwill campaign that will be highlighted during Red White & Boom. The "Hooah! Quad Cities" website will serve as a resource for military members, veterans and military families. Civilians are also encouraged to use the site to find out how they can support our soldiers. "Hooah! Quad Cities" is also the channel through which the community can connect veterans with employment, education and reintegration services, working with business and community partners to ensure that veterans are a vibrant, respected and well-served part of the Quad Cities.

Red,White & Boom is generously hosted by Genesis Health System and Riverboat Development Authority.

This event would not be possible without all of our additional sponsors including St. Ambrose University, Wells Fargo, Jumer's Casino & Hotel, United Healthcare, Iowa American Water, Quad-City Times, KWQC TV-6, B100, Lunardi's Italian Restaurant, Acsentra Credit Union, City of Davenport, City of Rock Island, The District, Downtown Davenport Partnership, Davenport Parks & Recreation Dept, Rock Island Parks & Recreation, Nerdwerx, and Quad Cities Chamber.

Supporting sponsors include Mutual Medical Inc, Platinum Information Services, Riverview Dental, LPI Loans, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company, Mississippi Fleeting LLC, and Davenport Fire & Police Departments.
