This year the Davenport Police Association Local #2 is hosting our second annual Trivia Night. 100% of the money raised goes to the Handicapped Development Center Thanksgiving Dinner and the Domestic Violence Shelter Toy Drive. The Thanksgiving Dinner has uniformed officers serving the clients dinner and the toy drive provides toys for children in the shelter year round but especially at Christmas time. Last years event was a success and we are looking to spread the word about our great event so that we can raise even more money this year for our two deserving charities. I am hoping that you might be able to give us a write up either online or in print and add us to your calendar of events.

I know there are many trivia nights around but I think ours stands head and shoulders above the rest. Last year we had 128 trivia players. In between rounds of trivia we gave away more than 80 door prizes valued at $15 or more. We also had a 50/50 drawing and great raffle prizes such as: Green Bay Packers autographed football, mens and womens matching Bulova watches, a membership to Golds Gym with training sessions, and an excellent tanning gift basket.

This year we have as many door prizes as last year and some great raffle prizes. A few of the raffle prizes include : 1 nights stay at Blackhawk hotel, mens Swiss Army watch, total detail package from Lujacks, 2 detail packages from Arnolds Body Shop, and a few more scheduled to come in within a few days. We are very excited about or great raffle items this year.

The trivia night is October 21st with doors opening at 6 pm and trivia promptly at 7 pm. The cost is $120 for a team of 8. It will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall in Davenport. To reserve a table for your team contact 563-328-6762 or email DPDTRIVIA@GMAIL.COM Be sure to follow us on Facebook as we are always updating our most recent donations.

Le Claire, Iowa, October 3, 2011 - Mississippi River Distilling Company invites the public to come to Le Claire on Friday evening, October 7 from 5:30-8:00 PM for our October First Friday Feature!  October 7 is also a big night for MRDC as it's the official launch party for the new River Pilot Vodka.  This vodka features MRDC's signature, hand crafted grain to glass and will be 100% local corn vodka with a crystal clear smoothness.  It is distilled to be a traditional smooth vodka with little to no flavor or aroma.  River Pilot Vodka is the fourth product released under the Mississippi River Distilling Company (MRDC) label and the second vodka produced by the distillery.  The name of the spirit is meant to highlight the local history of Le Claire, Iowa, the home of Mississippi River Distilling Company.  The image on the bottle is a likeness of Philip Suiter, Le Claire's first licensed River Pilot.  Le Claire's famous river pilots were instrumental in opening the upper Mississippi River to trade.

MRDC will follow in Le Claire's Apple Fest theme for the weekend with a menu featuring several delicacies with this fall fruit.   We'll be featuring two signature food recipes, River Baron Caramel Apple Cake and River Rose Apple/Onion Tart with Gruyere Cheese.  Top that off with a Sour Apple Martini made with the new River Pilot Vodka or a River Rose Gin and Cider cocktail.  We'll do an abbreviated tour at 6 pm and 7 pm.  There will also be specials on bottles of the new River Pilot Vodka, River Baron Vodka, River Rose Gin and this could be the last chance to pick up a bottle of our first seasonal product, Wide River Wheat.  Several other Le Claire store favorites will be staying open late that night as well along with an Art Stroll along the streets.

November's First Friday feature will be the release of our next seasonal product, coffee liqueur made from River Baron Vodka and coffee from Iowa Coffee Company.

Mississippi River Distilling Company is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 PM Sundays.  Free tours are offered to the public daily on the hour from 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.  The tour takes visitors through the entire distilling process.  Tours end in the Grand Tasting Room with free samples of products for those patrons over 21 years of age.

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE FESTIVAL

Reading is FUNdamental.  It's more than a slogan.  It's an established fact.  Success in school and success in life demands that children acquire solid reading skills.  The role of teachers is crucial, but the late Moline teacher and children's author David R. Collins hoped to help teachers inspire a love of reading and writing among children by exposing them to the writers and illustrators behind the books they read.  Thus was born the Children's Literature Festival.  Now, 30 years later, the Children's Literature Festival is still reaching out to area schools and their students.  The latest?and we hope greatest?chapter of the Festival unfolds on Tuesday, October 25, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the RiverCenter in Davenport.

Quad City children in grades 3rd through 6th are invited to the Children's Literature Festival to learn from an all-star lineup of authors, illustrators, and storytellers. Included in this year's cast of presenters are: Claire Vanderpool, 2011 Newbery Award-winning author of Moon Over Manifest; Belinda Holbrook,  a Davenport author who tells stories with string figures; local poet Ryan Collins; illustrator David Houk; Chris Turnipseed, a Davenport teacher-librarian and member of the Riverbend Storytelling Guild; Pavane Gorrepati and Ramya Prabhu, author and illustrator, respectively, of A Buzzy Bee Tale; Ann Hailey, author of the Fishscale Girl series; Lisa Riebe, author of the Pond Punkies series; Cara Fonteyne and Suzy Sanchez, writer and illustrator, respectively, of Cooper Moves In; and Ann Boaden and Karin Youngberg, Augustana College professors who write novels for young readers under the penname Ann Young. These festival authors, illustrators, and storytellers will meet with assigned groups to discuss their work, share ideas, and answer questions.

Adults would find such a lineup of talent impressive.  Children should find it educational and inspirational.  Each elementary school in the Mississippi Valley community is invited to share in the excitement! Homeschooled children are also encouraged to participate.

Registration forms are available through the Midwest Writing Center and Davenport Public Library. An "Adult Supervisor" (parent, teacher, librarian, or friend) must accompany every five students. Cost for each person is $5. Students should bring a box lunch.

Books and artwork by our lineup of authors and illustrators will be available for purchase and autographing. Proceeds from these sales will be used for future festivals.

Also included in the day is an interactive voyage on the ill-fated passenger liner Titanic with Captain Rick Sundin.

The David R. Collins Children's Literature Festival is made possible by grants from the Riverboat Development Authority, Scott County Regional Authority, Moline Foundation, and Bi-State Literacy Council. Other partners include the Midwest Writing Center and Davenport Public Library.

For more information about the festival, contact Tom Miller, Children's Literature Festival Board President, at 563-332-8967.
