The Moline Foundation awarded almost $17,000.00 in scholarships to 16 college-bound students this spring. The following scholarships were awarded:

Dolores A. Hulse-DiIulio Scholarship: Morgan McCarthy, Moline High School, $1,000.00.

Lee Womack Memorial Scholarship: Allison Boyle, Moline High School, $1,000.00.

The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate who plans to obtain a degree in education. Boyle plans to study Special/Elementary Education at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The scholarship was established by Womack's wife, Peggy and the Lee Womack Memorial Golf Outing Steering Committee. Annually since his death, a golf outing has been held in his memory to raise funds for a local charity. In 2004, the scholarship fund was established and is now administered by the Moline Foundation.

Marlier plans to major in Pre-Physical Therapy at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Romeo plans to major in Biology at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. The fund was established by the Class of '59 as a way to commemorate their 50th class reunion. Funds are raised by class members and volunteers through various fundraisers.

Maggie Webb Scholarship: Ashley Vermeire, Moline High School, $1,500.00.

Vermeire plans to major in Education at Black Hawk College, Moline, Illinois. The fund was established as a memorial to Maggie Webb, a 2001 graduate of Moline High School who was killed in December 2007 in a mass shooting at an Omaha Mall.

Lee McAllister Scholarship: Mariah Logan, $1,000.00, and Maggie Johnson, $500.00.

The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate planning to major in education. Logan plans to major in Music Education at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. Johnson plans to major in Elementary Education at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois. This scholarship was established in memory of Lee McAllister who taught in the Moline Schools from 1948 to 1981.

Stan Woods Scholarship: Kylie Romeo, $1,000.00.

The scholarship provides funds to a Moline High School graduate based on community involvement and leadership and academic achievement. Romeo is majoring in Biology at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Former students, co-workers, parents, and the community have contributed to the Woods Scholarship Fund.

Srikanth Yerra Scholarship: Alexandra Lenger, $500.00.

This scholarship provides funds to a Moline School District graduate or community college student based on financial need and potential for future personal achievement. Lenger is majoring in  engineering at Black Hawk College, Moline, Illinois. The family established this scholarship in memory of Srikanth Yerra, a 2005 graduate of Moline High School.

The Moline Foundation, founded in 1953, is a community foundation which provides grants to benefit health, human services, education, community development, the arts and other charitable organizations which help the citizens of Moline and the surrounding area, including the Quad Cities. (CEDAR RAPIDS, IA) - The African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) is proud to announce the creation of two new traveling exhibits: "The Only One" and "Against All Odds: The Life of George Washington Carver."
Both portable exhibits include large colored panels (retractable for easy transportation) that can be displayed individually or as a group. These exhibits are available free of charge for use in groups or organizations in Iowa. Previous traveling exhibit locations include libraries, government buildings, colleges, and business offices.
Based on the AAMI's 2012 temporary exhibit of the same name, "The Only One" explores the experiences of Iowans who have been the only African Americans on sports teams, in classrooms, at work and more.  Learn about Alexander Clark, who integrated Iowa schools in 1868 when his daughter Susan enrolled in Muscatine Grammar School #2 or Louis Dade, who won the Iowa Amateur Golf title in 1939 despite being denied access to the Fort Madison Country Club. The three panels of this exhibit specifically focus on social situations, education, and sports.
Funding for "The Only One" travelling exhibit was provided by generous donations from the AEGON Transamerica Foundation, Rockwell Collins, Roy J. Carver Trust, Alliant Energy, General Mills, P&G Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Community Foundation, Sisters of Mercy, State Historical Society of Iowa: Historical Resource Development Program and Tom and Nan Riley.
"Against All Odds: The Life of George Washington Carver" is a four panel exhibit that follows the life and accomplishments of the famous scientist. From his humble beginnings near Diamond, MO to his career as head of the Agricultural Department at the Tuskegee Institute, Carver had a profound impact on agricultural techniques and innovations that continue to shape our world today. The four panels of this exhibit focus on Carver's early life, his education at Simpson College and Iowa State University, his time at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and his later work in agricultural science.
Funding for "Against All Odds: The Life of George Washington Carver" was provided by generous donations from Dr. Geraldine Felton, James Graham, and Susan Kuecker, and the State Historical Society, Inc.
To reserve panels from either of these exhibits for a group or organization, contact Assistant Educator Tenika Johnson via email at tjohnson@blackiowa.org or by phone at 319-862-2101 ext. 226.
For more information on this or other programs, please visit the African American Museum of Iowa website at www.blackiowa.org or call 319-862-2101 ext. 223.  The AAMI is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and is located at 55 - 12th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Happy Hour

On Sunday, July 1st, Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church will host a benefit performance of a new play, The Chronicles of Lincoln and Grant.  The Civil War show is co-authored and performed by Quad City actors Tom Swenson and Dan Haughey, who will portray Lincoln and Grant, respectively in a 50-minute, two-person performance.  Showtime will be 6:30 p.m.  A free-will offering wil be taken, all of which wil be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project.

This original play features key reflections of Lincoln and Grant as they struggle through the early years of the Civil War, attempting to grapple with their public and private lives and their faith and to balance loyalties to family, friends, their fellow citizens and history.  A question and answer period with the performers wil immediately follow the performance and then the audience will be invited to enjoy dessert.  Swenson, of Davenport, and Haughey, of Moline, who have portrayed their interpretations of Lincoln and Grant separately as solo artists in schools, libraries, and museums across the nation, now combine their talents in this compelling drama.

The Wounded Warriors Project has provided assistance to the church's pastors, Sonia and Julio Alvarado, whose son, Sgt. Luis Alvarado, was critically injured in Afghanistan last November.  He has been in an ICU unit in San Antonio and now in Tampa.  Recently, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.  Church members hope this performance will enable people to celebrate the Fourth of July while also giving thanks to the Wounded Warriors Project for its support of the Alvarados and others in need of their services.

Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church is handicapped accessible.  For more information, contact Karen at 309-764-0619 or go to www.bethelwesley.org.
