Stately Old Estate Showing Her Age

August 12, 2015, Bettendorf, IA - Workers from Bi-State Masonry have begun a $25,000 masonry and brick repair project at the historic Joseph Bettendorf Mansion that overlooks downtown Bettendorf. The grant from the Hubbell-Waterman Foundation was received by Rivermont Collegiate, the current owners, and is the first-phase in a total repair and restoration project that will cost an estimated $180,000. All funds are being privately raised and any company, group, or individual wishing to contribute should contact the school.

The 100 year-old structure built between 1914 -15 is listed on the National Historic Register and holds great significance in the Quad Cities community. It has served since 1972 as the home of Rivermont Collegiate (formerly St. Katharine's-St. Mark's) the only independent and religiously unaffiliated college prep school in the Quad Cities.

More than 1,500 graduate from UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, WI (08/06/2015)(readMedia)-- The following students received degrees this spring from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Moline, Ill. - Brooke Marriott graduated cum laude with a bachelor of business administration in general management.

Bettendorf, Iowa - John Sokolik graduated with a bachelor of science in biology.

Students celebrated their achievements with friends and families at the commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16, held in UW-Whitewater's Kachel Fieldhouse.

Students from the College of Business and Economics, the College of Letters and Sciences, the College of Education and Professional Studies, the College of Arts and Communication and the School of Graduate Studies earned degrees.

Students who graduated cum laude had a grade point average of 3.4 to 3.59. Magna cum laude students had a great point average of 3.6 - 3.84. Summa cum laude students had a grade point average of 3.85 and above.

BANDITS PARTNER WITH AUGUSTANA COLLEGE TO CREATE 3RD BANDIT SCHOLARSHIP

New annual scholarship will help cover first year of tuition at Augustana and include summer internship
DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 6, 2015) - The Quad Cities River Bandits are expanding the Bandit Scholars Program with the addition of a third Bandit Scholarship, which will be open annually to Quad Cities-area students entering Augustana College, River Bandits owner Dave Heller and Augustana College President Steve Bahls announced at a press conference Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park.
The new annual scholarship will be awarded beginning with the high school class of 2016. Like the two other annual Bandit Scholarships awarded to Quad Cities-area high school or home-schooled seniors,  the new scholarship will be paid directly to the college and will supplement the grants and scholarships (if any) the recipient has earned ensuring the student's first year of tuition will be covered at no expense to them or their families. All three annual Bandit Scholarship winners will also enjoy a summer internship with the River Bandits following their first year of college.
"This great partnership with Augustana College is a true win-win in every sense," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "Augustana will have a student each year earn an internship opportunity with first-hand experience with a first-rate professional sports organization, and the River Bandits will be able to continue to offer internships to the very best and brightest students in our region, while each year helping another Quad Cities-area family afford college."
The Bandit Scholarships are open to current high school or home-schooled seniors who reside in any of the following counties: Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Whiteside Counties on the Illinois side, and Cedar, Louisa, Muscatine and Scott Counties on the Iowa side. The recipients are selected by a committee made up of community leaders, River Bandits ownership and staff and volunteers of the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend (CFGRB), which administers the scholarships.
"We are so grateful for the support of the Quad Cities River Bandits and other organizations who help fund scholarships for Augustana students," said Augustana College President Steve Bahls. "The River Bandits are a great partner for Augustana and the entire Quad Cities."
The Bandit Scholars Program was founded in 2009 by Quad Cities River Bandits team owners Dave Heller and Bob Herrfeldt. In addition to the new scholarship awarded to a student entering Augustana College, one scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering the University of Iowa, and another to a student entering either Black Hawk College or Western Illinois University.
The scholarships are funded by fan donations and fund-raising efforts by the River Bandits and the team's ownership. Fundraising events include the annual Bandits Race to Home 5K and River Bandits golf outing. Treasurer Fitzgerald Encourages State Fair Visitors to Register to Win a $1,000 College Savings Iowa Account

DES MOINES, IA (07/31/2015)(readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald wants Iowa State Fair visitors to stop by the College Savings Iowa booth and register for a chance to win a College Savings Iowa account for their child or grandchild. "Be sure to make a stop at our booth in the Varied Industries Building and register to win $1,000 towards a college education for a special child," Fitzgerald said.

Treasurer Fitzgerald encourages families to start saving for college as soon as possible. "Saving ahead of time may reduce a need to borrow to cover educational expenses, which can help families get through college with less debt," Fitzgerald added. "Even a small amount of money, invested regularly over time, can grow into a substantial sum."

College Savings Iowa is designed to provide families a tax-advantaged way to save money for their children's higher education. It only takes $25 to open an account, and anyone - parents, grandparents, friends and relatives - can invest in College Savings Iowa on behalf of a child. Participants who are Iowa taxpayers can deduct contributions up to $3,163 per beneficiary from their 2015 adjusted gross income, and there are no income or residency restrictions.* Earnings grow tax free and investors can withdraw their investment federally and Iowa state tax-free to pay for qualified higher education expenses including tuition, books, supplies and certain room and board costs at any eligible college, university, community college or accredited technical training school in the United States or abroad.**

Luther President Paula Carlson congratulated the graduates and introduced Mike Danforth, a 1995 graduate of Luther and executive producer of National Public Radio's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!" who gave the commencement address.

Charlie Leonard, Luther class of 2000, received the Luther College Young Alumni Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement of Luther alumni in their vocation or avocation that have graduated in the last 15 years. Leonard's work with countless children and their families through his theatre company Blue Water fills a void for students who are not getting opportunities in the arts.

Libby Logsden, Luther class of 2015, was awarded the Luther College Jenson Medal; an award presented each year to an outstanding senior, selected by the graduating class, who best demonstrates the ideals of the college through service to students and the college community.

A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,400, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in 60 majors and pre-professional programs.

College of Nursing students participating in clinical courses must have a total of 12 semester hours of earned credit, with eight semester hours of graded credit with a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.
