Eight counties added to declared disaster list

SPRINGFIELD (July 28, 2017) – Gov. Bruce Rauner today announced the state will waive penalties and interest for taxpayers in an additional eight counties who cannot file or pay on time as a result of the July 2017 floods. The waiver applies to affected taxpayers for payments or returns due between July 11, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2017.

As Iowans, we expect the rivers, streams, and lakes in the state to be free of pollutants, that the fish we catch are safe to eat, and that we can wade, boat, and swim without becoming sick.  Yet not every waterbody in Iowa is free of pollutants.  What’s worse is that some pollutants are not visible when you look at the water.

Twelve counties now included in disaster proclamation for recent severe weather

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation Tuesday for Chickasaw, Dubuque, Floyd and Kossuth counties in response to severe weather, heavy rains and flash flooding on July 21-22.

The governor’s proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this severe weather.

The proclamation also activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Program for qualifying residents of the four counties.

Following the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for your local area, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reminds local residents about steps they should take to protect their health from the extreme heat.

“Our neighbor watched what we did to improve our pasture, and was so impressed she wanted her’s to look the same,” said Scott Whitney of Maquoketa. Whitney installed a managed grazing system including stand improvement, subdivision fences, brush control, and rotational grazing, and now is working to do the same thing to his neighbor’s pasture.
